HAT-FLANGING MACHINE.
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MAO- DoNALn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New Y ork, have invented a new and Improved Hat-Flanging Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I
The object ofthe invention is to provide a new and improvedhat-flanging machine arranged to enable theoperator to reach every part of the brim with a view to facilitate the setting andfianging thereof. 1 For the purpose mentioned the hat block is mounted to turn on the carrier adapted to be swung from a horizontal into an upright A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the; accompanying drawings forming a partjof this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the hat-flanging machine with a hat in position on the hat block; Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the same, the stand being omitted; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4c is a sectional side elevation of the plate and hat block support in upright position; and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same with the plate and hat block in inclined position.
. The hat Ato be set and flanged is placed on the usual hat block B removably secured by suitable fastening devices C, C to a carrier D provided with a central pivot E engaging a plate F and adapted to rest in a recess Gr formed in the top of a support or table G secured by a screw H or other means to. the upper end of a suitable stand I. The support G is provided with depending flanges G engaged by a transversepivot J also. engaging curved slots F in lugs F depending from the plate F, so that the lattercan be swung on the pivot J from a horizontal into an upright or an inclined position, as shown in Figs. t and 5, or swung back again into a horizontal position, as
illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
a In order to lock the plate F and the parts '1, supported thereoi'n that is, the carrier D and the hat block B,pin normal position,
. useis made of a keeper F -depending from the plate F and extending through an Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 3, 1912. Serial No. 688,270.

opening G formed in the table G, and the said keeper F is. adapted to be engaged by a locking leverK fulcrumed at K on the under side of the table G, as plainly,
shown in Fig. 2. The handle of thelever K'projects slightly to one side of the table G sons to be within convenient reach of the operator to permit the latter to impart a swinging motion to the lever with a view to disengage the same from the keeper F to allow of swinging the; plate F and the parts supported thereon from a horizontal to an upright or to an inclined position as above mentioned. The'lever K is pressed on by a spring L held on the under side of the table Gr so that when the plate F is swung back into horizontal position the keeper F engages the lever K to lock the 7 plate F in horizontal position.
It is'understood that the table G is proximately semicircular in form soas to,
permit of conveniently swinging the plate 7 s F and the parts support-ed thereon into an upright or an inclined position, as 'indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and in full lines in Figs. 4 and 5.
It will be noticed that the collar D and the hat block B fastened thereon can be readily turned 011 thepivot E as a center, whether the carrier D is in horizontal, upright or inclined position, so as to enable the operator to conveniently reach every part of the brim of the hat especially the under side of the brim, to facilitate the proper setting and fianging of the brim. It will also be noticed that when the carrier D is inhorizontal position the under side of the brim can be conveniently ironed the same as now generally practised but it is understood" that the main important feature of the invention is the arrangement by which the hat block can be moved into up right or inclined position, and. turned so as to enable the operator to conveniently reach a plate having depending slotted lugs, a sup- 2 port provided with pivots engaging the said slotted lugs, and. a fastening device onthe said support adapted to engage the said plate to lock the latter in horizontal position on the support.
2. A hat-flanging machine, comprising a hat block, a carrier on which the said hat block is removably secured, a plate on which the said carrier is mounted to turn, the plate having a depending keeper and depending slotted lugs, a support provided with pivots engaging the said slotted lugs, and a springpressed lever on the said support adapted to engage the said keeper to lock the said plate when in horizontal position to the said support.
3. A hat flanging-machine, comprising a hat block, a carrier on which said hat block is removably mounted, a plate on which the carrier is mounted to turn, a stationary support on which the plate is pivotally mounted to swing from a vertical to a horizontal position, said support being provided with an aperture, a keeper depending from said plate and adapted to project through said aperture, and a spring-controlled lever pivoted on the under side of said support and adapted to engage said keeper.
4. A hat-flanging machine, comprising a hat block, a substantially circular carrier on which said hat block is removably mounted, a substantially semi-circular supportmg table havlng a recessed upper face'and an aperture extending therethrough, a stand upon which the said table is stationarily mounted, a plate disposed within the recess in the upper surface of said table and having a keeper adapted to project downwardly through the said table aperture, a central pivot member carried by the said plate and upon which the said carrier is mounted to turn, said plate and said table being provided with depending lugs and transverse pivots through the said lugs whereby the former with the carrier and hat block, may be swung from a horizontal to a Vertical position and vice versa, and a laterally swinging lever pivotedupon the under surface of said table and adapted to engage the said plate lug when the latter projects through the said table opening.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
