Description

J. E. WILLIS GAS APPLIANCE Dec. 15,1925- Filed 001;. 10. 1923 Patented Dec. 15, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.-
' JOSEPH EUGENE WILLIS, 0E LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
GAS APPLIANCE.
Application filed October 10, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. VVILLis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Gas Appliance, of which the following is a specification.
By way of explanation, it may be stated that, in many parts of the country, gas is used almost exclusively for cooking, for heating, and for other purposes. The foregoing being understood, it is obvious that places of attachment for the gas tubes which lead to the heaters must be provided, and the present practice is to permit the gas cocks to project outwardly from the wall, into the room, the projecting cocks adding nothing to the appearance of the apartment, and generally detracting from its appearance.
The present invention aims to provide novel means whereby a gas cook, when not in use, may be housed within the wall of a room, the cock, nev rtheless, being readily accessible when occasion for use arises.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
Vith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description pro ceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown, can be made, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a'device constructed in accordance with the invention; the lid or closure is opened, and parts are broken away; Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2' of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2.
The device forming the subject matter of this application preferably is made of metal, and includes a box-like casing 1. To the top and the bottom of the casing 1, angle brackets 2 are secured, the angle brackets having vertical flanges 3 overlapping the outer surface of the facing or plaster 4 of a Serial No. 667,776.
wall 5, the casing 1 being located between the studding members 6. The casing 1 has A face plate 14 overlaps the plastering 4: 7
about the edge of the casing 1 and gives an ornamental finish to the device, as Figure 1 will show. The face plate has an opening 16, controlled by a swinging closure 15, which may be hinged to the face plate in any desired manner.
It will be obvious that when the closure 15 is in open position, as shown in Figure 1, the gas cook 9 will be readily accessible. lVhen the occasion for the use of the cock has passed, the lid 15 may be closed, as shown in Figure 2, thereby covering the cock 9, and rendering the cock unobjectionable so far as the appearance of the room is concerned.
It may be desirable to form sockets 18 on the rear surface of the face plate 14, a hinge pin 19 being mounted in the sockets, the hinge pin being secured at 20 to the closure 15, so that the closure may be swung to and from the open position as shown in Figure 1. The sockets 18 on the face plate 1 1 are spaced apart at such a distance that the side walls of the casing 1 will fit closely between the sockets as shown in Figure 3. The result is that the openings in the face plate 14 will be alined with the openings in the flanges 3 of the angle brackets 2, to receive the securing elements 17 which connect the face plate with the flanges 3 of the angle brackets 2, and, consequently, with the casing 1.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A device of the class described, comprising a box-like casing open at its forward end, brackets on two opposite walls of the casing at the forward end thereof, a face plate co operating with the forward end of the casing, the face plate and the brackets having openings, sockets on the face plate and located outside of the casing, the sockets being spaced apart at such a distance that two other opposite Walls of the casing will fit closely between the sockets, thereby to aline the openings of the face plate with the openings of the brackets, securing elements mounted in the openings, a closure for the forward end of the casing, a hinge pin carried by the closure, the ends of the hinge pin projecting beyond said two other 0 posite walls of the casing and being received in the sockets, and a cock located in the casing and located behind the closure.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto allixed my signature.
JOSEPH EUGENE XVILLIS.
