- This invention relates to hinges and particularly to devices of this class of the concealed type; and the object of the invent-ion it to provide means whereby the separate butts of the hinge may be secured in position by suitable fastening devices engaging the rear or face portions of the separate butts without the use of attaching devices passed through the front or exposed surfaces as has been the common practice; a further object being to provide a hinge butt which is adapted primarily for use in connection with a stationary support and swinging member composed of sheet metal or partially of sheet metal whereby the screws or other attaching devices may be passed through the sheet metal butts of the stationary support and swingingv member and into the respective butts or into engagement therewith for retaining the butts in position, and to accomplish this result without having said screws or attaching devices visible through the front or open ends of the butts, thus producing a neat and finished appearance as well as a rigid mounting for hinges of any kind or class; and with these and other 0bjects in view, the invention consists in a hinge of the class and for the

This invention relates to hinges and particularly to devices of this class of the concealed type; and the object of the invent-ion it to provide means whereby the separate butts of the hinge may be secured in position by suitable fastening devices engaging the rear or face portions of the separate butts without the use of attaching devices passed through the front or exposed surfaces as has been the common practice; a further object being to provide a hinge butt which is adapted primarily for use in connection with a stationary support and swinging member composed of sheet metal or partially of sheet metal whereby the screws or other attaching devices may be passed through the sheet metal butts of the stationary support and swingingv member and into the respective butts or into engagement therewith for retaining the butts in position, and to accomplish this result without having said screws or attaching devices visible through the front or open ends of the butts, thus producing a neat and finished appearance as well as a rigid mounting for hinges of any kind or class; and with these and other 0bjects in view, the invention consists in a hinge of the class and for the purpose spaccified, which is simple in construction, efficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.y
rThe invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view indicating the mounting of two hinges in connection with a support or door frame and door.

In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, I have shown at 10, part of a stationary support or Serial No. 172,943.
door frame which may constitute a part of a cabinet or body of any desired construction. At 11, I have shown a part of a door to be mounted in connection with the fiame 10, and said door and door frame are preferably composed of sheet metal or partially of sheet metal. The part 10 where the door is to be hinged thereto is bent into channel formation to form an inner plate 10a and side plate 10b, extending in parallel relation to the side 10c of the support and spaced therefrom, and the inner end of the plate 101 is bent upon itself, and at right angles to said plate as shown at 10d, to form a door stop limiting the inward movement of the door preferably at its free edge. rThe door 11 is provided at its edge portions with a box-shaped inwardly directed extension formed by oppositely arranged side walls 11a and 11", an inner wall 11C in spaced and parallel relation to the front wall 111 of the door, the wall 11b having a flange 11e secured to the inner face of the front wall 11d by welding or in any other desired manner. The wall construction above described forms a tubular chamber or compartment 12, which extends along the edge portions of the door and in alinement with the plate or iange 10b when the door is in closed position.
The door 11 is hinged to the frame 10` by two or morer of my improved hinges composed of two substantially similar butts 13, which in the construction shown in said figures, are formed from cast or die cast metal but which may be formed in any desired manner, each of said butts being U- shaped in cross sectional form, being provided with a side wall 14, and top and bottom walls 15 and 16, the outer faces of which `are arc-shaped in cross sectional form. The
inner adjacent faces of the top and bottom walls 15 and 16 are provided adjacent the outer ends of the butts when mounted in connection with their supports with pivot pin apertures for receiving pivot pins 17, note Fig. 8 and with grooves 18- opening through. the rear ends of the hinge butts and adapted to receive pins 19 carried at the free ends of links 20 mounted upon the pivot pins 17 of the respective butts, said links being pivoted together centrally as seen at 21, as in the conventional type of concealed hinge link construction.

In a sheet metal body having` spaced and parallel walls, a hinge butt adapted tov be mounted in said body between said spaced walls, one of said walls having an aperture substantially similar to the peripheral contour of the butt and in which the butt is mounted so that the outer tace of the butt will lie flush with the outer 'face oit said apertured wall, and means mounted in connection with the sheet metal body and engaging said butt for retaining the same ii. connection therewith, said means involving screws passed through said body and engaging said butt inwardly of the outer face thereo 3. A hinge for coupling two sheet metal butts together, said hinge comprising two substantially similar butt members, one of which is secured to one body and the other to the other, each of said bodies being apertured to receive the respective butts which it snugly in said apertures, and the outer faces of which lie flush with the corresponding faces of said bodies, hinge links for coupling the butts together, and means mounted in connection with said sheet metal bodies and engaging said butts inwardly of the outer faces thereof for securing the butts to their respective supports.

A hinge for coupling two s heet metal butts together, said hinge comprising two substantially similar butt members, one orp which is secured to one body and the other to the other, each of said bodies being apertured to receive the respective butts which iit snugly in said apertures, and the outer faces of which lie flush with the corresponding faces ot said bodies, hinge links for coupling the butts together', and means mounted f in connection with said sheet metal bodies and engaging said butts inwardly oic the outer faces thereof for securing the butts to their respective supports, said means comprising screws passed through said bodies and in threaded engagement with said butts.
5. In a hinge comprising two butts, one of which is secured to a stationary support and the other to a swinging support and links pivotaily 'coupling the separate butts together, one of said butts comprising` a substantiallf,7 tl-shaped body adapted to be mounted in and contained within the boundaries ol one of said supports, the channel oi' said body opening outwardly through the support with the outer and exposed face of the butt flush with the corresponding face oi the support, and means on the support engaging the PEti-shaped body oi the butt inwardly of the outer and exposed face thereoic for retaining said butt within and to the support.
