Be it known that Ci-rAnLns A. FnT'rERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at la'shington, in Ithe District of Columbia,has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Indexes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

The invention relates to indexes for books and has for its object to provide an index particularly adapted for use in telephone books and formed from a plurality of elongated members adapted to be interposed between the pages adjacent the back o-f the book, and provided with a plurality of flexible members extending beyond the free ends of the leaves and provided with indicia. Also to provide means whereby said index may be easily and quickly applied to a telephone book without modifying the construction of the book.

A further object is to provide an index for a telephone book wherein flexible strips extend from substantially the back of the book between the pages and terminate in indicia outside of the free edges of the leaves of the book, the ends of the strips being adapted to be grasped by the fingers and the strips utilized for opening the book at the desired point.

With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 3 is a modified form of securing means for holding the index in place.

Figure 5 is a perspective. view of the lower corner of the book shown in Figure 3.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a conventional form of telephone book and 2 an aperture in one corner thereof, through which. aperture a cord, is

adapted to pass for hanging up the book as a whole. The index 3 is formed from a plurality of elongated flexible strips 4, which strips are provided with right angularly disposed flexible arms 5, preferably formed integral with the strips 4, thereby allowing the device to be stamped from thin sheet metal or from celluloid. The elongated strips 4 adjacent their ends are provided with apertures 6 and 7, which apertures register with each other and with the aperture 2 and the aperture 2EL which extend through the corners of the book adjacent its back. After the elongated members 4 have been placed in position a cord 6al passes through the aperture 2 and the apertures 6 in the elongated members 4, and the cord 7a passes through the aperture 2'r1 and the apertures 7 in the lower ends of the elongated members 4, said cords holding the device in place within the book and in a position where the vario-us indicia 8' of the arms 5 will be disposed outside of the free ends of the leaves of the book where the user of the book may easily grasp any oneof thel flexible members and by pulling upwardly on the same open the book at the desired page. By forming the device of elluloid or steel sulficient exibility will be"`pr`ovided to allow flexing of the arms 5 independently of the elongated members 4 and also by so forming the various members, the arms 5 will have su'llicient stiffness whereby they will not get out of parallel relation to each other.

By referring to Figures 3 to 5 inclusive it will be seen that the construction is sub stantially the same with the exception that a cord 9 passes through the aperture 2 in the upper corner of the bdok adjacent its back and through the apertures G in the elongated members 4, said cord being tied at l() and is then passed over the Upper corner ll of the book and downwardly and over the lower corner 12, and thence through the apertures 7, and secured at 13. It will be seen in this form the lower ends of the elongated members 4 project below the bool; and therefore the cord 9 holds the index in the book without the necessity of providing the hole 2a, or modifying the construction of the book.

From the above it will be seen that an index is provided which is particularly adapted for use in connection withtelephone books and one which is durable and so constructed that it may be easily attached and removed from the book, thereby allowing the same to be attached and used in connection with subsequently printed books.

The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is The combination with a book having a plurality of leaves and an aperture extending through one corner of the book adjacent its back, of a plurality of indexing members for said book, said members comprising elongated members having apertures adjacent their ends in registration with each' other, said elongated members being disposed between the leaves of the book and with one of their apertures in registration with the aperture in the corner of the book, the other ends of the elongated members extending beyond the other end of the book, a single flexible securing member extending through the aperture in the corner of the book and the registering apertures of the elongated members, said securing member passing downwardly from the upper end of the book over the back of the book and through the apertures in the lower ends of the elongated members outside of the book and forming means for holding said members against displacement and flexible members carried by the elongated members and terminating outside ofthe free edges of the leaves of the book.
