Be itfknown that I, ELMEE S. FARniivc- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hardwick, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Account-Pads, of which the following is a specication.

This invention is embodied inan account pad for the use of farmers, the pad being adapted to be used like a bound book in making entries on the dierent pages, and being also adapted to be filed with other like pads for future reference.

In the drawings, 12 represents an elongated flexible record strip, .preferably of paper, the lengthof the stripbeing much greaterthan its width. The strip is provided with transverse creases 13 and 13a adapting'it to be folded from the extended condition shownby Fig. 5 to the condition shown by Fig. 4, the strip when folded con,- j

stituting a series of leaves, arranged bookwise and adapted to be opened and closed like the leaves of a book, some of which are uncut, the edges of the leaves formed `by the creases 13a being equivalent to the uncut edges of two adjacent leaves. One side only of the strip is therefore adapted for use in making entries, and this side constitutes a series of blank pages, and is provided with indicia identifying said pages, as indicated by Figs. 2 and 5.

Referring to Fi 5, it will be seen that one page is identi ed by the word Miscellaneous, another by the word Grain, and another by the word Groceries, etc. The

indicia for one page may serve also for the adjacent page, as shown by the lefthand end of Figs. 2 and 5, where the word Miscellaneous constitutes a heading for the first and second pages.

It will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 that the leaves may be opened and closed without lengthening the pad beyond the combined length of two adjacent leaves, although, if desired, the pad may be entirely unfolded `and extended, as indicated by Figs. 2, 5 and G.

One of the end leaves is'longer than the other leaves, so that when the pad is folded, as indicated by Fig. 4, an extension or pad head 14 is formed which projects from one end of the folded pad and is adapted to en- Vgage confining means, such as the studs 15 on the temporary binder hereinafter described, or elongated studs or spindles 16, constituting parts `of a filing device, one of said spindles being shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4.

In the embodiment of the invention here shown, the pad head 14 is perforated to form orifices 17, adapted to receive either the studs 15, or the spindles 16.

18 represents a flexible cover, one end of which is glued or cemented to the head 14 and reinforces the latter, the orifies 17 being formed also in the cover 18. One leaf of said cover is longer than the other, as shown by Fig. 4, so that when the cover is folded, the head 14 is exposed.

The described pad may be adapted for use during a limited period `such as one month7 and the head 14 may be provided with eX- posed indicia identifying the period .of use of the pad, as shown by Figs. 1,2 and 5, showing the word June inscribed on the liead 14. When the pad is folded and filed away with other pads, it may be readily identified by the exposed indicia above described.

Duriiig the period in which the pad is in use a temporary binder may be employed to protect the pad and serve as a tablet supporting its leaves. As shown by Figs. 1 and 3, said binder is composed of stiff leaves 19 and 20, connected by a flexible hinge portion 21. The above described studs 15 are attached to the leaf 19, said studs being ai'- ranged to register with and enter the orifices 17, and adapted to engage suitable holdingdown devices adapted to confine the head 14 in contact with the leaf 19. As here shown,

the studs 15 are grooved to engage an elastic rubber band 22 which is formed to be stretched by its engagement With the stu-ds.

It is obvious that the elongated strip inay have any desired nulnber of creases and leaves. While I have shown seven leaves in the present case, the number in practice will be usually greater.

It will be observed that the inner ends of the leaves formed by the creases 13 are not confined like the inner ends of the pages of a bound book, but are separable from each. other, so that the strip inay be extended from the folded condition shown by Fig. 4 to the fiat` elongated condition shown by Figs. 5 and 6, thus permitting all the. pages on Which entries are made to be inspected simultaneously, and also permitting quick access to any page, Without loss of time in turning the connected pairs of leaves one by one. The front side of the strip is longitudinally ruled to forinelongated spaces 12a extending the entire length of the foldable portion of the strip to receive columns of figures. The head 14 is printed to, provide headings 12b, such as the Words Paid, Received, at the heads of the spaces` 12a, the headings being alined with the spaces. Owing to the fact that the head 14 is exposed and never covered by the body or foldable' portion of the strip, the headings 12b serve to identify the spaces 12a on each of the leaves, in any adjustment of the pad. When the pad is adjusted as shown by Fig. 1, they headings identify the spaces 1.2 on the first and second leaves. The pad may be adjusted to bring other leaves into the saine relation with the head. For example, the third leaf may be adjusted to cause its end bearing the Word Grain toadjoin the head 14, so that the headings 12b will identify they spaces 12a on the third and fourth leaves,4 and so on. Memoranda inay be entered on the back side 0f the strip.

I claim:

1. An account pad formed by an elongated iieXible record strip having transverse creases adapting the strip to be folded into a series of connected leaves arranged book- Wise, one side of the strip formingk a series of blank pages, and being provided with headings forming suitable page-identifying indicia,o.n`e of the. endi leaves being elongated to forni a head which is exposed when the pad is folded, said head being provided with pad-identifying indicia.

An account pad formed by an elongated flexible record strip having transverse creases adapting the strip to be folded into a series of connected leaves arranged bookivise, one side of the strip forming a series of blank pages and being provided With headings forining suitable page-identifying indicia, one of the end leaves being elongated to forni a head which is exposed When the pad is folded, said head being also provided. With pad-identifying indicia and perforated to engage confining studs.

3.
