UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY MoEoKEE, In, or HOMEWOOD, THEODORE THOMPSON, OF HARVEY, AND OTTO HAMMERMEISTER, OF HARVEY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS To AMERICAN sTovE COM.- PANY, or sT. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORP RATION OF NEW JERSEY.
GAS-RANGE CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed February 5, 1925 Serial No. 7,030.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, .HENRY MoEonER, Jr., THEODORE THOMPSON and OTTO HAM- MERMEIsTEn, all citizens of the United States, residing at Homewood and Harvey, respectively, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Gas-Range Construction, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in gas range construction whereby the-parts forming the construction are capable of use in a right hand or a left hand oven range.
Heretofore it has been necessary in constructing right and left hand oven ranges to have special parts for the two ranges, and it is-one of the objects of'this invention to so construct the parts as to adapt them for either a right hand or a left hand oven range, thus avoiding the expense heretofore necessary to construct these parts differently, and to avoid the'necessity of car-- rying in stock parts for a left hand and parts for a right hand oven range. 7
Gas. oven ranges as now constructed are provided with open burners at either the right or left hand side of the oven, and are provided with a backing usually enameled located in rear of the open burners, the said backing provided at its top with an inwardly extending to shelf. A further object of the present improvementis to provide a top shelf support that is. so constructed that it can be used. for supporting the shelf for either a right or a left hand oven range, which so far as we are aware is new.
A further object of the present invention is to so construct this reversible part that it is adapted to receive an inwardly extending reversible bracket for supporting the said top shelf.
Another object of the present improvement is to so construct the support that it is adapt-ed to permit the passage of the gas pipe or manifold for either a right hand or left hand oven range.
In carrying out the above objects the said support is adapted for/either a right or left hand oven range by simply turning the part end for end, that is to sa%wkhen using the part for a left hand ran ,in
order to use the same part for a right hand oven range it is only necessary to turn it end for end when it will act for a range with the oven at the reverse side and in either position the reversible part is adapted to fit on the cooking top.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a right hand oven range with the improved parts In Fig. 1 the gas range is shown with an oven 1 at the right and a burner top 2 at the left of the 'oven., Located in rear of the burner top2 is a vertical backing 3, usually enameled sheet metal. The parts composing the present improvement are preferably made of sheet metal, though they may be constructed of other material without affecting the present improvement.
Extending inward from the top of the backing 3 is what is known and referred to in the art as a top shelf 4. One improvement consists of a reversible support in the form of a vertical angle iron 5 which is located at the outer edge of the backing 2. This shelf has its edge 6 turned downward as shown around its extent.
The supporting bar or angle iron 5 is made so that it is reversible, that is, is capable of being used for a gas range with right hand oven, and is capable of being used with a left hand oven gas range by simply turning it end for end. This angle iron has an inwardly doubled portion 7 and the outer leg or angle 8 of the angle iron is cut out at each end as shown at 9 and 9',
' the said out out portions being equal. When the angle iron is used for a right hand gas range as here shown the lower end 10 of the inturned portion 7 rests on the cooking top 2, and the upper cut out portion J receives a suitable bracket 12.
This bracket 12 has its angle 13 made of a length to fit between the lower end of the upper cut out portion 9 and the under side of the shelf 4, and the cut out portion of the angle iron and the bracket each have bolt openings 14 and 15 which are the same distance apart to receive the clamping bolts 17, while the flange 6 of the shelf 1 is provided with bolt openings 18 adapted to mesh with the upper openings 14 and 25 of the angle bar and the bracket. It will beainderstood in this construction that when the angle iron is used for a left hand oven range that the bracket can also be used, since the lower end of the angle iron 5 has its out out portion 9 of the same length as the cut out portion 9 whereby the said bracket will fit either end of the angle iron. will also be noted that the angle iron has the bolt openings 14' at its lower end to receive the said clamping bolts 17 when its position is reversed for a left hand oven range.
The angle iron 5 which forms a support for the shelf 4 has its leg 19 provided with semi-circular openings 20 and 20, the said openings beinglocated in relation to the cut out portions 9 and 9 exactly the same. The reason for these openings is to register with an opening 21 made in the backing 22 that is located below the cooking top 2 through which the gas supply pipe 23 passes forward to the manifold 24. Therefore the opening 20 of this angle iron when it is turned end for end will also match with the opening 21 for a left hand oven range.
It will also be observed that the rear leg 19 of the angle iron has its upper portion provided with bolt openings 25 and the lower portion provided with bolt openings 25. When the angle iron is used for a right hand oven the upper openings 25 receive securing bolt 26 that pass through the rear edge 6 of the shelf 1 and the backing plate 3. lVhen the angle supporting iron 5 is applied to a right hand oven range the lower bolt openings 25 receive bolts 27 that pass through the said openings, while the openings 14 receive the clamping bolts 28 that pass through the angle bar and the side plate 29. Also the bolts 28 pass through the depending flange 30 of the cooking top 2.
The inturned part 7 of the angle iron 5 makes a finish for the stove from the front, its lower end 31 resting on the cooking top 2 and its upper end 32 adapted to receive the lower end of the bracket 12. Therefore this inturned part 7 performs the triple function in its various positions, that is to say, when used for a right hand oven co'nstruction the part 32 receives the lower end of the bracket 12 and thepart 31 rests above the cooking oven 2. When the angle iron is used for a left hand oven range it is reversed whereby the part 32 acts to rest on the cooking top 2 and the part 31 to receive the lower end of the bracket 12.
\Vith the parts in the positions shown in the drawings the upper cut out portion 9 of the angle iron is exposed, which would leave the bolts passing through the openings 25 also exposed. In order to complete.
this supporting angle construction an extension member 33 is provided. The part 34 corresponds with the part 7 and the part 35 rests against the backing 3, with the open ended slots 36 receiving the bolts 17. In applying thisextension 35 the bolts are applied and the nuts left loose to receivethe part 35 after which the said bolts are screwed up thus clamping this extension in position, and it serves tocomplete the whol structure.
.In the construction here shown the shelf braoket 12 needs only to have its edge 13 made of a length to fit between the part 32 and the under part of the shelf when the parts are in the position here shown, or when the angle iron is reversed, then the edge 13 will fit between the cut out part 31 and the under sideof the shelf 4:. Otherwise no claim is made in this application for special construction of the bracket. A special construction of bracket is provided and will form the subject matter of a separate application.
The cooking top 2 is constructed as before stated with its edge 30 turned downward, and as shown in the drawings this turned down edge is provided near the corner with bolt openings 37 to receive the clamping bolts which pass through the openings 14' and 25.
A gas range constructed with reversible parts as herein described that are adapted for use with a right and a left hand oven range effects a considerable saving in its construction over the constructions now known to us. It makes a gas range convenient and cheap to construct; it saves the carrying of these parts for the two kinds of ranges in, stock, and it produces a gas stove which is very attractive in appearance.
We do not desire to limit ourselves to the exact construction herein shown and described, since variations may be made in the construction without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
