i Patented Aug. 11, 17925.'
UNITED STATES PATENT I oFrlcE,
FQUNTAIN PEN.
Application led March 28, 1924. Serial No. 702,593.
To all wlwm t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. NnALoN, of Indianhead, in the county of Charles and State of Maryland, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Fountain Pens, of which the following is a specification.
.My invention relates to improvements in Fountain Pens, one object being the provision of a single structure which will embody two fountain pen units, for different colors of ink, such as red and black and which will allow the instant use of either pen as required with ease and facility.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a double unit fountain pen which will be of the proper size for convenient use and carrying in the pocket.
' Another object is the provision of a fountain pen which can be instantly adapted to write with two separate colors of ink, which `will be self filling and which will be of the simplest, -most durable and cheapest possible construction.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a two unit fountain pin which will be about the size and price of the ordinary fountain pens in general use and which Will be thoroughly eiiicient and practical in every particular.
To attain the objects stated my invention consists of a fountain pen embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as described and claimed and as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which i Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fountain pen constructed in accordance with and einbodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a Vertical central sectional view, and
Fig. 3 is a Sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In carrying my invention into edect my fountain pen comprises a casing l, of the proper size, having a protecting cap or cover 2, for its mouth or open end 3.
Mounted in the casing near its open end 3, is the shaft 4, carrying the pinion 5, which is in mesh with the racks 6 and 6 carried by or formed upon the inner edges of the sleeves 7 and 7 which carry the pen points 8 and Sand with which sleeves are connected, the separate ink containers or reservoirs 9 and 9', which fit snugly side by side in the casing and are adapted to be ii led by the compression plates 10 and l0', operated by the finger buttons 11 and 11',
' extending outside the casing a sufficient distance, and to the sleeve 7 is secured the ear 12 connected to the finger push plate 13, movable in slot 14, of the casing to slide back and forth to bring either pen unit desired into operative postion, as will be readily apparent from the drawing and description. t
It will be readily understood that a fountain pen constructed according to my invention can be easily and quickly filled; can be instantly adjusted by the sliding of the iinger plate to bring either pen into use without interference; that the structure as a whole is of the simplest, cheapest and most durable construction, that the pen is of the proper size for use and easy carrying in the pocket; and that generally the improvements are efficient and practical and will 'fill a long felt want in a thoroughly satisfactory manner.
It will be observed that the compression plates 10 and 10 lit in seats'or recesses of the casing and rest upon the containers 9 and 9', making a snug fit within the container to prevent the containers from Working too loosely in the casing, and that a single slot 14 is provided in the casing to guide the slide or ear 12, and that connect-ed with said slide is the elongated finger piece 13, which forms a seat for the finger and permits easy movement of the slide to witl1- draw and project either pen point desired, and these features are of paramount importance, making a single slide and finger piece only necessary for complete control and operation of the device.
I claim The fountain pen herein described consisting of a casing formed with a division wall providing twin chambers, a shaft mounted in one side of the casing and in said wall, a pinion on said shaft, a pair of pen carrying sleeves disposed in said chambers of the casing and adapted to be projected beyond the mouth thereof, and having euch n rack on its inner face meshing with said pinion, aslide movablein one side of the casing and connected to one of Suid sleeves. :in elongated finger piece seured to said slide to fit the end of the finger, elastic ink containers connected to said sleeves and fitting in the chambers of the casing and n.
pair of compression plates arranged in recesses of the casing to act upon said containers. l0 In testimony whereof I hereunto ax my signature.
GEORGE A.' NEALON.
