1 Claim.
- This invention relates to new and useful improvements in writing instruments, and more particularly it pertains to fountain pens.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a combination fountain pen which may be used to write with a plurality'of inks of different colors.
It is another object of the invention to provide a new and novel construction whereby a plurality of fountain pens may be used selectively in order that the writing may be produced selectively in colors.
I am aware that multiple fountain pens have been heretofore constructed, but such devices with which I am familiar employ but two pens and are, therefore, limited to two colors.
It is a further object of the present invention,
so to construct a fountain pen that at least three pens and consequently three colors may be employed.
It is a further object of the invention so to construct a multiple pen and particularly one employing three or more pens, that when the pen is closed and not in use, all of the pens will extend in the same direction so that the pen may be positioned in the pocket with all of the pensv pointing upwardly to prevent leaking;
Other objects of the invention will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, for which purpose, reference will be had to the following specification and the accompany ing drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a fountain pen constructed in accordance with the present invention, the penbeing shown in its closed position,

Figure 12 is a view in end elevation of the ele-. nient formed from the blank illustrated in Figure 1 f Referring to the drawing, a pen constructed in accordance with the present invention comprises a two-part barrel consisting of the sections A and B. The section A is reversible end for end with respect to the section A and is provided upon one end with an external thread 23 and upon its opposite end 'with an external thread 25. The part B is provided with an internal thread 24' adapted for interengagement with the threads 23 or 25, depending upon the position of the section A. The part A carries a writing element in the form of a pen x, and the part B carries two writing elements X-1 and X2, both in the form of pens. Each of the pens X, X-1, and X-Z has a feedbar 3 which will be hereinafter described. The pen X is mounted in the part A by means of a pen block 2, and is supplied with ink from an ink reservoir 1.
Each of the two pens X-1 and X2 are car-. ried by pen blocks 15 each of which blocks in cross-sectional form constitutes one half of an octagon. These pen blocks are secured to internal sliding frame members 12 by pins 16 and these frame members are shaped to conform to the octagonal interior of the barrel part B. Each of the pens X-1 and X-2 has an ink reservoir '11 which is semicircular in cross-sectional form as illustrated in Figure 9. These pens X--l and X2 are divided by a longitudinally extending partition and each of the frame members 12 is provided with a projection 40 which slides in slots 41 in the partition 17.
The several feed bars are all of the same construction and the description of one will, therefore suffices The feed bar is shown in detail in Figure 5 and comprises a body portion having an ink well 9, two feed passages 10 and suction holes 8.\ These feed bars are mounted directly behind their respective pen point in any desired manner.
Each of the ink reservoirs is adapted to be filled by compression thereof and the mechanism by which this is accomplished will now be described. These mechanisms all being of the same construction, the description of one will sufiice. Secured to the barrel parts adjacent each ink reservoir, and mounted in openings 30, there is a spring 4 having ears 4', the spring being 2 secured to the barrel part by pins or rivets 6. An operating arm 5 is pivotally connected as at 7 to the spring ears 4'. To compress the ink reservoir, the arm 5 is rocked to the position in which it is shown in Figure 2 after which, if it is forced in a longitudinal direction, the reservoir will be collapsed. When not in use, the arm is adapted to lie in parallelism with the barrel part in a recess 28. I
A protecting cap 18 is removably carried by the barrel part B to protect the pens x-1 and X'2 and said cap may have a vent opening 31. A shoulder 19 determines the position of the cap relative to the barrel part B and this cap carries a clip 20 secured thereto by rivets or pins 21 and-an internal plate 22.
The device is used as follows:
'It is intended that the pen X be used for black ink and it normally occupies the position in which it is shown in. Figure 1. When it is desired to use this pen, the barrel part A is reversed as indicated in Figure 2, exposing the pen for use. The pens X-l and X-2 when not in use, occupy the position in which they are shown in Figure 1. These pens are adapted to carry inks of different colors, and when it is desired to use either of these pens, it is projected forwardly as shown in Figure 2, merely by engaging a projecting knob or the like 20' and exerting pressure thereon. The pen is returned to its inoperative position in the same manner.
Thus it will be seen that the invention provides a new and novel fountain pen by which writings in diiferent colors may be accomplished.
- Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:-
In a multiple writing instrument, a barrel, a partition extending longitudinally of a portion of said barrel, said partition having a pair of spaced longitudinally extending slots, a writing element mounted upon each side of said partition, a supporting and carrying frame for each of said writing elements, a supporting block for each writing instrument, each supporting block being carried by'its respective frame, a projection extending from each frame, through one of the slots of said partition, and means for individually moving said writing elements longitudinally of the barrel.
