Be it known that I, CHARLES M. I-IAYNns, a citizen ot the United States of America, residing at Chillicothe, in the county ot Ross and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements in Selt- Iilling Fountain Pens, oit which the 'tollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.

rl'his invention relates to fountain pens oit the type in which the filling of the pen.

with inl; is etlected by means ot a reciprocatory plunger or piston working 1n the barrel to draw the inl; into the same by suction, and its chief object is to provide an improved device of the hind indicated, in which with the exception of the piston the working parts are outside ot the ink-space ot the barrel, thereby increasing` the ink capacity ot the pen. Another object is to provide a sel't-iilling pen ot the utmost sunplicity and durability of construction, in which possibility of getting` out of order is practically eliminated. To these and other ends the invention consists in the novel features and combinations hereinafter described.

In the construction illustrated the piston 10 has a liquid tight fit in the barrel or ink reservoir 11, and to that end may be wrapped or covered with yielding material, not shown, or reliance may be placed on accurate .finishing ot the two parts.v At its rear end the barrel is reduced to provide an internal shoulder or stop 12 to limit the rearward movement of the piston, which in assembling' the parts is inserted through the forward eind. rIlhe piston itsel'l is equipped on its rear tace with an eye 13 secu re l`y anchored in place, to which one end et a pliable or toldable actuating member is attached, in the present instance a small chain lll. The chain is preferably long enough to reach well outside of the barrel when the piston is .fully Aavented ,as in Fig. 2.

and its outer end is attached to a swivel 15 in the end of a cap 16 which may be screwed on the reduced rear end ot' the barrel, as in Fig. 1.

To fill the barrel the cap 16 is removed and the piston is advcanced as 'tar as desired. This movement of the piston may be accomplished by means ot a lead pencil or any other device at hand, the user insorting` it through the rear end of the barrel and with it pushing the piston in toward the nozzle 17 at the other end, to the position shown in Fig. 2. Thrusting the nozzle in the ink the cap 16 is grasped with the lingers and drawn up steadily, thus4 Y retracting the piston which in turn sucks ink into the barrel through the nozzle. lVhen thepiston comes up to the stop or shoulder 12 the pen is held with the point up and the chain is coiled in the cap 16, whereupon the latter is screwed in place on the reduced end ot the barrel, the swivel 15 permitting the -cap or barrel to be rotated tor the purpose without twisting the chain.

The cap 16 is preferably made as small as possible, consistent with convenience in use and proper housing ot the chain, and should permit the cap 18 to pass entirely over it so that in twisting the latter cap (18) to remove it the other will not be unscrewed.

It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details illustrated but :an be embodied in other forms without departure from its spirit.

I claim-- In a seltdilliugl fountain pen, an inl; barrel, a piston movable axially therein, the rear end otI the barrel being open to admit a suitable member for advancing the piston, a cap for closingthe rear end of the barrel, and a chain ot' open links connecting the piston and cap and swiveled to one ot said members and adapted to extend out of the rear end of the barrel ttor retracting the piston, said cap beingremovably mounted on the rear end of the barrel and adapted to house the chain when the piston is in retracted position.
