J. SCHADE LOOSE LEAF BOOK Filed June 11. 1924 i To all whom itmay concern:
Patented Aug. 4, ,1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' JOHN SGHADE, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR '].0 NATIONAL BLANK BOOK COMPANY, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, A VOLUNTARY TRUST ASSOCIATION.
LoosE-Lw 3001:.
'Be it known that 1, JOHN SoHAnE, a citizen of the United States, residing, at the city of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Books; and I do declare the i01 lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This inventionrelates to loose leaf binders, but more particularly has reference to that class of such devices which have metal hinge connection between the fleirible side cover portions and a metal back.
The present improvement is closely analogous to that which is set forth and described in my rior application, filed July 28,1923, under gerial No. 654,300, which has become Patent No. 1,512,489, issued Oct. 1, 1924, and the object of the resent invention is to provide a construction in which the spaced eyes along the edges of the covers are formed by the fingers themselves.
Referring, to the accompanyin Fi re 1 is a back view bro en away, showing a book constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a back view broken away showing one of the covers equipped with the spaced eyes.
Figure 3 is a section at the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Fi re 4 is a detail plan view of the meta strip from which the hinging element utilized at Figure 2 is formed but showing the fingers staggered.
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 3 illustrating a cover equipped with a metal hinge element formed from the strip shown at Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a plan view of a modified form of metal strip in which the fingers forming the eyes are connected at their outer extremities, while the opposite fingers are of any suitable number.
Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing the metal hinge elements of the cover made from the strip shown at Figure 7.
Figure 9 is a detail perspective of the strip shown at Figure 7 as it appears after drawing the eyes are formed and the opposite fingers partially bent into clinching position, and Figure 10 is an inside broken plan view illustrating a cover equipped with the strip shown at Figure 9 and in hinged relation with the metal back.
Similar numeralsof reference denote like parts in the several figure of the drawing. In my application above referred to the hinging element of'the .covers was formed from a metallic strip with oppositely extending fingers in staggered relation to each other, and the spaced eves were formed by the central or solid portionof the strip and both sets of fingers were bent around and then clinched in the upper and lower surfacesof the cover respectively.
In the present invention a strip 1 such as is shown at Figure 4 is used. and the fingers 2 of one set are curled around to form spacedeves such as are shown at 3 in Figures 1. 2 and 3. while the fingers 4 of the opposite set pierce through the cover 5 and are then clinched beneath the same as shown at Figure 3.
But these finger of the strip 1 need not. be staggered since they can extend opposite each other as shown at Figure 5. and when the fingers 2 are bent around to form the eyes and the fingers 4 clinched through the covers the appearance will be as is illustrated at Figure 6.
But the strip 1 may be so blanked out that the outer ends of the fingers that are curled around to form the-eyes will be connected bv ,the metal of the strip as shown at 6 in Figure 7, so that when these fingers 6 are bent around to form the eyes their outer ends will all be connected together, and thus the structure will be greatly strengthened. and the opposite fingers may be of any desired number and are then clinched through the cover, as illustrated at Figure 8.
The curling around of these fingers 6 to form the eyes 3 and the clinching position of the opposite fingers 4 are clearly illustrated at Figure 9, and the inside appearance of the cover when hinged to the metal back by this style of fingers is shown at Figure 10.
The metal back plate 7 has integral spaced alined eyes 8 formed at its edges, and when the book cover are provided with the spaced eiined eyes in the manner before described, the eyes of the covers are interengaged with the eyes of the metal back plate, and pintles 9 are then inserted through said eyes,
By forming the spaced eyes at the inner edges of the covers, in thegmanner herein described, the clinching finger can be bent at their bases Where they join the strip 1, thus presenting an exceedingly neat and desirable appearance at the outer feces of the covers, as shown at Figure 1.
What is claimed is A book cover of the character described,
comprising e metal beck having integral spaced sdined eyes formed at its side edges, metal strips having spaced fingers extending from their opposite side ed es, one set of the fingers of each strip bein clinched through the respective covers 0 the book while the other set of fingers of each strip are curled in unclenched position to form spaced ,alined eyes that extend from the inner edges of the covers, the e es of the covers and back being interengage and pintles inserted therethrough.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature hereto.
J OHN SCHADE.
