a W /W Patented July 21, 1925.
Amuse r. 'WALRAVEN, or DALLAS, TEXAS I? BOOK oovnal l Application filed February 1 all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT T. IVALRAVEN, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in book covers.
The object of the invention is to provide a book cover formed of a rectangular sheet of material suitable for the purpose and involving the reinforcing and covering of the book corners in-a new and novel manner.
A particular object of the invention is to form end and side flaps and reinforcing tabs without cutting or the use of guide lines.
A further object of the invention is to fold the corners of the cover inwardly in such a manner as to snugly hold the side flaps in place and also to provide multiple plies of the cover sheet on each side of the cover board, whereby a very durable corner is provided.
A'construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described together with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a cover sheet and showing the book cover boards spread thereon in dotted lines,
Fig. 2 is a detail showing the first fold,
Fig. 3 is a detail showing the second fold,
Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the completed cover,
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. i, and
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a completed cover showinga cord fastening;
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates a rectangular sheet which may be of paper, cloth or any other material suitable for the purpose. At the center the sheet is provided with the usual guide lines 11 for cutting the back tabs 12 which are tucked under the book back in the usual manner.
In applying the cover the book cover boards A are spread out on the sheet as is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The

first step consists in folding the side flaps 13 inwardly along the edges of the book cover boards as is shown in Fig. 2. The next step is carried out by cupping the corners of the sheet, folding them inwardly and tucking the folding portions 14: down between the cover boards A and the outer panel of the cover as is shown in Fig. 3.
This leaves a folded portion 15 overlapping the end flap 16, which is next folded clown and glued or otherwise secured. By observing 5 it will be seen that there are three plies of material on each side of the cover boards at each corner and such reinforcing makes for durability. The portions 15 may be coated with glue when the cover is manufactured or adhesive may be applied when the sheet is formed into a cover.
It is obvious that various means for fastening may be employed. In Fig. 5 I have shown a. cover which may be made of cloth. The end flaps are provided with eyelets 17. Cords or tapes 18 are fastened at one end, in the eyelets in the end flaps and are tied at the opposite ends in the eyelets therein. A cover of this type is durable and may be removed without injury.
Various changes in the size and shape of the different parts, as well as modifications and alterations may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim, is:
1. A book cover comprising a rectangular sheet with slits cut at top and bottom to provide back tabs and marginal portions, the side portions being first folded inward to form side flaps, the corner portions being next tucked in between the cover boards and the outer side panel of the sheet, and the end portions then being folded down, whereby three plies of the sheet are disposed on each side of the cover boards at each corner.
2. A book cover comprising a rectangular sheet with slits cut at top and bottom to provide back tabs and marginal portions, the side portions being first folded inward to form side flaps, the corner portions being next tucked in between the cover boards and the outer side panel of the sheet, and the end portions then being folded down, whereby three plies of the sheet are disposed on each 7 side of the cover boards at each corner, the end flaps being glued to the side flaps.
3. A book cover comprising a rectangular sheet with slits out at top and bottom to provide back tabs and marginal portions, the side portions being first folded inward to form side flaps, the corner portions being next tucked in between the cover boards and the outer side panel of the sheet, and the end portions then being folded down, whereby three plies of the sheet are disposed on each side of the cover boards at each corner, and means for fastening the flaps in their folded position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ALBERT T. VVALRAVEN.
