UNITED STATES ALBERT T. WALRAVEN, or DALLAS, TEXAS.
BOOK COVER.
. Application filed February 24, 1925. Serial No. 11,077.
To all whom it may comer/t:
Be it known that I, ALBERT T. WALRAVEN, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Covers, of which the following is a specification. r
This instrument relates to new and useful improvements in book covers.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient book cover formed from a rectangular sheet of material suitable for the purpose and possessing certain novel and characteristic. features making for easy and ready application to a book.
A further object is to provide a cover in which reinforcing and fastening tabs are provided at the corners and which are formed in a simple and easy manner.
Another object is to provide a cover which may be fastened either with an adhesive or a cord or the like, according to the material from which it is formed.
A still further object is to provide a cover in which the corner tabs may be out and folded without the use of guide lines and which may be applied to books of various sizes.
A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described together with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the sheet as manufactured and before being folded, but indicating the lines of foldin Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the different steps in the folding and applying of the cover,
Fig. 3 is aplan view of a folded and tied cover,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a plan view of another form of cover illustrating the different steps in the folding of the flaps, and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5. I
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates a rectangular sheet of paper, cloth or other material suitable for the purpose. The sheet is formed with central guide lines 11, whereby the back tabs 12 may be cut and folded inward. In applying the cover to a book the cover boards A are spread out upon the sheet so that the mar shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Cuts are made along the lines 11 to form tabs 12 which are folded inward and tucked under the back of the book. The side margins of the sheet are next folded over onto the cover boards to, form side flaps 13 as is shown in Fig. 2. After the flaps are creased the corners 14; are cut off, diagonally from the corners of the cover boards and this removes the ends of the folded gins thereof extend beyond the edges as is portions of the flaps; whereby tabs 15 are The end flaps may be supplied with adhesive panels 17 and these moistened when it is desired to fasten the cover; or the flaps may be glued together at the time the cover is applied to the book. shown the end flaps 16 provided with eyelets 18, the cover in this instance being made of cloth. Lengths of cord or tape 19 each have one end secured in the eyelet of one end flap and the other end passed through the complementary end flap and tied in a bow. Various other fastenings In Fig. 3 I have could be employed. Fig. 4 illustrates the reinforcing of the corners.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown another form in which the end flaps 16 are first folded over onto the cover boards A and the corners 14 cut off. This forms tabs 15 on the ends of the end flaps and these tabs are tucked in around the side edges of the cover boards instead of around the ends, as before described. The side flaps 13 are then folded over and fastened either by gluing or otherwise. In this form the corners are also reinforced as is indicated in Fig. 6.
hat I claim is: I
1. A book cover comprising a sheet having opposite marginal portions folded inwardly to form flaps, the outer end portions of said flaps and the continuous portions of the sheet being cut oif obliquely across the lines of the respective folds to form tabs for tucking in behind the cover boards of the book, back tabs being out from the margins of the sheet and tucked between the sheet and the back of the book, the remaining marginal portions of the sheet being folded inward to form flaps, and means for securing the flaps of the cover in place.
2. A book cover comprising in combination with the cover boards of a book, a rectangular sheet formed with continuous end, side and back flaps along the end and side edges of the book covers, and a tab at each corner of the book covers tucked in between the outer surface of the boards and the outer panels of the cover before the flaps have been folded over the ends and sides of the book covers, the back flaps also being tucked in behind the back of the book.
3. A book cover coi'i'rprising in combination with the cover boards of a book, a rectangular sheet formed with continuous end, side and back flaps along the end and side edges of the book covers, and a tab at each corner of the book covers tucked in between the outer surface of the boards and the outer panels of the cover before the flaps to form opposite flaps, the outer end portions of said flaps and the contiguous portions of the sheet being cut oil obliquely across the lines of the respective folds toform tabs for tucking in behind the cover boards of the book, back tabs being cut from the margins of the sheet and tucked in between the sheet and the back of the book, the ends of the sheet being folded inwardly to form end flaps, the first named tabs being located between the side and end flaps and being folded to lie substantially parallel to the sheet to form reinforced corners.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ALBERT T. ALRAVEN.
