Description

M. PILTZER DESK ACCESSORY Oct. 29, 1929.
Filed Aug. 24. 1927 Patented Oct. 29, 1929 UNITED STTES ATENT OFFICE DESK ACCESSORY Application filed August 24,1927.
This invention relates to a combination writing pad and portable letter le which is designed to be used primarily upon an office desk in an extended or unfolded position,
but which may also be folded up to form a container for letters and other papers, suitable index means being provided under which the contained papers may be classified for convenient reference.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement of the indexed containers for the papers kept in the appliance, and to provide improved means fer retaining in place a glass plate used for a working surface.
Still other objects and advantages will appear in connection with the following detailed description of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the article in the fully opened or extended position, the directions in which certain hinged elements move being indicated by dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the article in the folded condition;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the device as viewed in the drawings, A designates in a general way the central body portion of the appliance, B the left-hand foldable section and C the right-hand foldable section. 6 designates a main central backing sheet of leather or other flexible, durable and ornamental material which, as viewed in the drawings, is overlapped at its right and left edges by supplemental backing sheets 7, one of which is shown in Fig. 3. The sheets 6 and 7 overlap to a considerable extent, as well illustrated in Fig. 3, their contacting overlapping portions 'being glued or otherwise secured together. To the upper surface of the central backing sheet 6 is secured a relatively thick layer 8 of cardboard or other stiff material,
Serial N'O. 215,117.
the right-hand edge of the backing sheet (i terminating flush with the edge of said cardboard layer and the left edge portion of the supplemental backing sheet 7 at that side of the device being interposed between the backingsheet 6 and cardboard 8 in order that glue or cement may be applied to both upper and lower surfaces 4of said sheet 7, the more firmly to secure it to the central or body portion A of the appliance. Another cardboard cover section or layer 9 of stiff material is provided at each side of the stiff central section 8, the right-hand cover section 9 being shown in Fig. 3, each of said sections 9 being attached to its backing sheet 7 at a distance from the central section 8 in order to provide for conveniently folding over the section C into the position shown in F ig. 1l.
VAcross the entire upper surfaces of each of the side layers 9 and overlapping also the central layer 8, extends a flexible facing sheet l0 having an intervening hinge section 1l which is glued or otherwise secured to the portion of the sheet 7 which itoverlies. A retaining strip 12, the function of which will be explained hereinafter, is secured to each of the opposite edge portions of the central section 8, the right-hand one of these strips being shown in section in Fig. 3. Over this strip 12 extends the sheet 10 having an edge C portion 13 which is glued or pasted to the upper surface of the layer 8. At the other side edges of layer 8 are strips lei which are constructed similarly to strips 12 and which cooperate therewith to retain in place a glass plate 15 which forms a smooth, readily cleansed working surface. The portion of layer 8 which underlies this glass plate is surfaced by a sheet 16 of leather or other suitable material.
The foldable section B is provided on the face thereof adapted to be folded over and lie adjacent the glass plate 15 with a series of leaves 17 which are preferably secured at their upper edges so that they may be swung upwardly to permit interposing therebetween loose sheets or documents to be filed. The foldable section C is provided with leaves 18 preferably arranged with their base portions hinged near the inner edge of the section C and their outer ends located near the outer edge of said section C whereby these leaves may be swung upwardly or away from the front edge of the section C to form spaces or pockets 18 between adjacent leaves for the reception of sheets or documents to be filed beneath the leaves 18.
It will he observed that the strips 12 and 14 form upstanding flanges throughout the margin of the central portion A which project along the edges of the glass plate 15 and thereby serve to hold the latter against lateral movement, and as the weight of the glass normally maintains the plate seated, it is substantially supported against accidental displacement without the use of fastenings, yetthe plate may be readily removed and replaced as occasion may require. In transporting the device, the foldable sections B and C are folded over the plate 15 and then serve to hold the latter in place on positioning the Vfile on edge.
I claim:
vA desk accessory comprising a main eentral'section consisting of a rectangular layer of stiff material, a rectangular glass plate supported thereby, the length and width of which are less than the corresponding dimen sions of said layer and retaining strips secured to said layer .at the .ends and sides of said glass plate and extending from corner to corner of said glass plate on all sides thereof; and foldable sections hinged to said central section, each of said sections having a series of superimposed leaves attached thereto, said foldable sections being foldable over upon said glass plate to aid in retaining it in place when the de ,vice is folded for carrying.
In testimony whereof, I have vallined my signature.
MORRIS PILTZER.
