-NITED STATES ABRAM L. SHUTTER, WEST HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIG-NOR TO JAMES GRAHAM & (30., OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A FIRM COMPOSED OF SAID SHUTTER AND CHARLES E. GRAHAM.
HOOD FASTENER.
Application filed November 28, 1921. Serial No. 518,414.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Arman L. SHUTTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'est Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have inventcd a new and useful Improvement in Hood F asteners; and I do hereby declare the following. when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a'full. clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Fig. l a side view, partly in section, of a hood fastener constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 a sectional view on the line of Figure 1.
Fig. plan view of the base detached.
Fig. 4. a side view of the post detached.
Fig. 5 a side view of the latch detached.
My invention'relates to improvement in hood fasteners, such as are employed for fastening the hoods of automobiles. The object of this invention is to construct a device the parts of which may be readily cast. and which do not require any machine work in finishing and which will provide a secure fastening device for the hoods of automobile engines, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ. a base 10' adapted to be secured to the frame of an automobile adjacent to the sides of the hood. This. base is formed from a single casting and provided with an upwardlyprojecting plate 11, which forms a bearing for the lower edge of an ordinary hood 12, which is also provided, above its lower edge, with a loop 13. The base is formed in its under face with a chamber 14 and with a. slot 15 to give clearance for a post 16, which is provided near its lower end with a transverse opening 17 for the passage of a locking-pin 18. This post is provided with a head 19. Around the post is alatch 20 formed from a single casting and provided with a locking-hook 21 adapted to engage with the loop 13 and at the opposite side with a finger-grip 22. This latch has a chamber 23 corresponding substantially in diameter to the head 19, and at its lower end in engagement with the the latch and into the base and forcing the pin downward against the action of the spring 26 until-tho lower end projects sufficiently below the base. as indicated in broken lines in Figure 2, to permit the insertion of tho locking-pin .18. in operation, the latch is grippcd and a firm hold is secured by means of the fingerpiece Q2, and 'aised against the force of the spring 26 until the hook 21 engages with the loop 13. The device is then released and the spring forces the latch downward and holds it firmly hood. Tn releasing the hook, the latch is raised as before. and, owing to the slot 15, the latch and post may rock on the base. This construction provides a hood fastener of attractive appearance and effective in use.
The plate 11 provides a firm bearing for the book, which is drawn against it by the latch. so that rattling is avoided.
I claim:
1. A hood fastener, comprising a latch formed with a locking-hook and having a tubular chamber open at its upper end and formed with an integral spring seat, and a hole at its lower end. a headed post entering said chamber and formed with a transverse. hole near its lower end, a spring around said post within said chamber, a base formed in its under side with a recess, and with a slot intersecting said recess, into which the post extends, and a pin extending through said post and seated in said recess.-
2. A hood fastener, comprising a latch formed with a locking-hook and having a tubular chamber open at its upper end nd formed with an integral spring seat, and a hole at its lower end, a headed post entering said chamber and formed with a transverse hole near its lower end, a spring around said post within said chamber, a
base formed in its under side with a recess specification in the presence of two suband having an upwardly-project-ing integral scribing Witnesses. plate, and with a slot intersecting said recess, into which the post extends, and a t pin extending through said post and seated Witnesses: in said recess. WALTER G. SHUTTER,
In testimony whereof, I have signed this vEARLE W. SHUTTER. e
