DOOR LATCH.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 26. I919.
1,374,053, Patented Apr. 5,1921. I
HENRY N. 'BRAWNER, JR, or WASHINGTON, prsrnro'r or COLUMBIA.
" DOOR-LATCH.
Application filed June 26,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY N. BRAWNER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain provements in Door-Latches, of. which vthe following is a specification. 1 My invention relates to. an improvemen in door latches, andmore particularly such as are adapted for use on stallion stalls, where extraordinary strengthis required to prevent the door of a box stall from being forced open by the animal confined therein. This invention comprises among other features, a bar of metal constituting the latch, of considerable length, pivoted at one end to the door or gate at some distance from the edge thereof, with the free end thereof protruding some distance therebeyond, and passing through the vertical slot in a keeper rigidly secured to the edge of the door or gate, at right angles to the latch itself, in position to enter a catch secured,
on the door or gate post adjacent, also socured in a position at right angles to the latch, for securely fastening the door or gate, and at the pivoted end confined by a bridge plate which spans the latch and is itself secured to the door or gate, and a spring secured to the bridge plate by the same bolt which forms the pivot of the latch, thereby holding the end ofthe springsecurely while the other end is so connected with the latch that it normally holds the latter in position to fasten the door or gate when closed and effectually prevent its being accidentally unfastened.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1, is a view in front elevation showing my improved latch in operative position on a door,
Fig. 2, is a vertical section through the pivotal point of the latch,
Fig. 3, is a horizontal section taken through the same point,
Fig. 4, is a view of the guide, and
Fig. 5, is a view of the keeper.
A, represents the latch.v This is preferably made of a long bar of metal which is adapted to lie flat against the door or gate to which my improved device is applied. The bridge plate 1, extends vertically over the inner or pivoted end and is secured at its ends to the door or gate 2, by screws or bolts 3, and a stiff spring 4, extends well out toward the free end of the latch with Specification of Letters Patent. i
new and useful Im- 1919. Serial No. 306,830.
its free end 5,bent inwardly" and extend 1nto a hole 6, formed in the latchwtoi' m re eive it, so that its downward tension is applied thereon well 'out toward'the' free endof the latch, The fixed end of the spring is extended inwardly around the ina hole 8, .anda similar hole 9, in the bridge these several' -holes '7, common to spring, bridge plate and latch, passes and is secured tothe door or gate to hold all three parts in'place and proper relation thereon, and against the possibility of being forced off by the animal confined within the stall no matter sure he may happen to exert upon the door or gate from within.
fThe guide 11, is preferably inthe form 0 door or'gate 1n any approved manner, that is, by means of screws or bolts 12, and at right angles to the latchand this guide is provided with a vertically disposed slot 13, of the desired length and just enough wider than the thiclmess of the latch to permit it to move freely therein, the inner edge of this slot being set flush with the surface of the door or gate as shown in Fig. 3, so that the.
latch is confined to a position close against outer edge; to receive the latch when thedoor or gate is closed,- 'it' being held by bolts or screws 16 to the door or gate post 17, parallel with the guide and at right-angles to the latch, and its outer edge 18, is rounded or inclined to cause the latch to ride over into the slot 15.
gate, it makes a strong and impregnable fastoning.
The extreme end of the latch may be coiled around horizontally into the form of a loop 19, which serves as a handle and also as a'means for fastening a rope or cable Patented Apr, 5, 1921.
how much presa fiat plate secured to the edge .of the r the door or gate to which it is applied. The 'keeper 14, is also preferably made of a fiat plate, with an open slot 15, at the upper,
positions at right angles 1 20, which may be passed up over pulleys 21, and thence to some convenient place where an operator may pull it to release the door or gate, and several of them at the same time easily made and applied and which effectw' ally performs its functions.
I claim: 4 1. The combination with" a guide and catch, of a latch,-a bridge plate, a spring,
a stud passing through the openingin the v latch, bridge-plate and spring, one end of said spring turned down against the bridgeplate to form a rigid connectiontherewith,
the free end of said spring received in an opening in said latch to exert pressure upon the latch in one direction.
2; The combination with a'door, a guide, and a catch, of a latch, abridge plate arranged transversely of the latch, a stud supported by, the door and adapted to pass 'through alined openings in the latch and bridge plate, anda spring adapted to extend parallel to the latch, one end thereof provided with an opening through which the stud passes, the inner-end of said spring bent downwardly against one end of the bridge plate for rigid connection therewith, the outer free end of sald spring received in an opening in said latch to exert a downward pressure thereupon tohold' it in position, and means attached to the free end of the latch, whence the latchmay be released.
Intestimony whereof I aflix my signature.
