This invention relates to door latches for position. An additional object isto provide a spring pressed latch bolt having a part adapted to assume a wedging relation with the striker plate and thus hold the latch member from rattling.
l Heretofore with the usual bumpers of rubber and the like used for the purpose of preventing a rattling of the door latch, the said bumpers become worn and ineffective for the purpose, and an additional object of this invention is to provide an anti-rattling device for door latches positioned on or controlled by the bolt member adapted' to automatically wedge the bolt in the striker plate and adapted to automatically take up wear, These objects and the several novel features of the invention in its preferredv form are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings in which-` Figure 1 is a perspective view of a door latch embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof taken on line of Fig. 1, showing the latch bolt in position in the striker plate.
Fig. 3 is a face view of the striker plate showing the latch bolt in position.
The case for the latch may be of any approved form or construction, the case shown in the drawings consisting of an L-shaped plate 1, the short leg of which is provided with an aperture through which projects the end 2 of the latch bolt 3. This bolt is slidable in the case between the member 1 thereof and a second member 4 secured thereto. The bolt body may be of any approved type se preferably one in which a lug 5 is provided Specification of Letters Patent.

extending into the slot 6 in the casing 1 as shown in Fig. 1. The casing L1 may be provided with an aperture 5a allowing the head of the bolt 2 to be withdrawn from the aperture in the short leg of the case 1, as will be understood from Fig. 2. This latch bolt 4may be operated by any approved means,
the operating lever 6 here shown being of ordinary type pivoted by means of a screw f? to the case l. This lever, as will be understood from Fig. 2, has the back edge thereof i-n engagement with a lug 8 at the rear end of the bolt 3 so that by moving the lever backward the bolt may be withdrawn against the tension of the usual coiled spring 49 mounted in the case on a pin 10 and having an end in engagement with the latch member 3. This construction is well known and in fact any character of spring may be utilized tending to force the end 2 of the latch member through the aperture in the case.
The face'of the bolt end 2 is curved as shown inV the drawing, so that on closing the door said latch will be retracted by engagement of this rounded face of the bolt end with the striker plate 11, which is to be understood as being secured to the door post. The striker plate 11 is provided with an aperture 12 for the bolt end and is also provided with a slot like aperture 13 opening into the aperture 12 in the plate as shown in Fig. 3. The end of the latch member is also provided, preferably on the upper side, with a wedge member 111 which is adapted to engage in the slot 13 of the striker plate.
It is to be noted that the said end 2 of the-bolt is somewhat less in width than the aperture 12 in the striker plate allowing it to freely enter the aperture on the closing of the door. The wedge member 14 however, is somewhat wider at the base than the width of the aperture 13 in which it is to engage. Therefore, on the door being closed and the bolt end 2 and wedge portion 14 thereon introduced into the aperture 12 and 13, the wedge member 14 will wedge tightly in the aperture 13 by action of the bolt spring and the arrangement of parts is such that the portion 14- seats in the aperture 13 prior to the latch being forced forward to its otherwise fullest. possible extent by action of the spring 9. This allows for considerable ,so that, the aperture 13 and wedge portion 14 becomes worn, the latch member is forced forward to Wedging position. This Wedging relationship of part let in the slot or aperture 13 prevents the latch from rattling in the striker plate and the desired object of this invention is secured.
`As is shown in Fig. 2 the striker plate when the latch' member is 'in registration therewith is spaced slightly from the face ofthe case l to allovv free movement of the door relative thereto and it is to be understood that the striker plate is held in such relationship by being secured to the door post.
From the foregoing description it is evident that by this arrangement of a ivedging member of the character described preferably formed on or secured to the latch member, an automatically operating anti-rattling door latch is provided that is extremely simple in form and inexpensive in construction and automatically takes up Wear.
Having thus briefly described my invention, what I claim isl. In a door latch, a spring-pressed latch bolt, means for operating the same, a Wedge member formed integrally with the bolt, and a striker plate having an aperture for the bolt and Wedge member in which the said Wedge member assumes a Wedging relation by action of the bolt spring.
2. In a door latch, a spring pressed bolt member, a striker plate therefor apertured to receive the bolt, said bolt having an end curved on one side to operate the bolt by contact with the strikerY plate and having a portion at said end provided With flat faces positioned at an angle one to the other, the striker plate having an aperture for said v portion, the Width of the aperture being less than the Width of the said portion near the Wider end.
3. In a door latch, a spring pressed latch bolt, a striker plate aperturedto receive the bolt, the bolt end having a curved face on one side and a Wedge shaped portion formed on one edge thereof, the striker plate having an aperture coextensive With the bolt aperture in which the Wedge shaped portion has a Wedging engagement byaction of the bolt spring.
Ll. In a door latch, a spring pressed latch bolt, having a curvedface and a fiat face in angular relation, a Wedge like member 'having oppositely inclined flat faces positioned on the upper edge ofthe bolt end; one face thereof being coextensive Withthe flat face of the bolt', and a strikerplate for the said bolt having an aperture shaped to receive the bolt end and wedge member, the Wedge member seating in the portion of the aper ture provided therefor.
5. In a door latch, a spring-pressed latch bolt provided with a Wedge shaped portion formed integrally on one side thereof, Vand Y a' striker plate havingan aperture for the bolt and Wedge member and in which the said Wedge shaped portion may seat by action of thebolt spring.
6. In a doorlatch, aA spring pressed `latch bolt provided with a curvedand fiat face in angular relation, and 'a portion havinginelined flat faces oneface of which is coextensive with the at face of the bolt end, the angle therebetween being less than the angle between the eurvedand flat faces of the bolt, and a striker plate having an aperture for the said bolt slightly larger than the bolt end and `an aperture for the said fiat faced portion in which said portion may seat.
