CURTAIN ROD.
iniaaor.
Application filed May 2, 1921. Serial lilo. 465,971.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMANDA BEGKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain Rods, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to curtain sup ports, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which permits hanging of the same without danger of injury to the curtain.
The difliculty experienced in the use of curtain rods is that there is a tendency for the curtain to hang on the end of the rod when being applied, which frequently tears the curtain and renders the application of the same rather diiiicult. In addition to this it has also been found that when the rod is being raised to its supports that the curtain frequently slips oif'the ends of the rod.
It is, therefore, the primary object of the invention to provide a novel curtain rod or support which not only permits the curtain to be readily applied by forming the rods in such a manner that the blunt end of the same is projected laterally of the path of movement of the curtain in the application of the curtain to the rod and wherein said laterally projecting portion also serves to prevent accidental disengagement of the curtain from the rod.
The invention also has for its object to provide a curtain rod, the ends of which are disposed substantially at right angles to the body portion of the rod, and of a length to permit said ends to enter the pocket of the curtain unobstructed.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a pair of telescopic members having their end portions extended substantially at right angles to the body portion of said members and wherein the right angular extended portions serve as spaces to separate the walls of the pocket of the curtain and permit the rod to readily enter the pocket.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a window casing and curtain showing the invention applied,
Figure 52 is a plan view partly in section,
Figure 3 is an end elevation showing the position of the lug when the curtain is being applied, and
Figure 4: is an endelevation showing the position of the lug and the curtain after the curtain has been applied.
Referring to the drawings 5 designates one section of a curtain rod consisting of a tubular member of any desired material and length, the end 6 of said section is closed, while projecting from one side of the section near the end is an extension or lug 7. It will be noted that the lug 7 extends substantially at right angles to the body portion of said section and is slightly less in diameter than the diameter of the body portion of the section. The distance between the opposite sides of the section 5 and the end of the lug 7 is slightly less than the width of the pocket A of the curtain B.
The remaining section of the curtain support consists of a rod 8 having its end portion 9 tapered to permit said end to be readily inserted in the section 5 to prevent binding of the rod 9 in the section 5 by contact of the end portion 9 with the inner wall of the section 5 so that the rod is unobstructed in its movement. The end 10 is extended at right angles to the body portion of said sec tion to form an extension or lug 11. The distance between the end of the lug 11 and opposite side of the rod, similar to the lug 7, is considerably less than the width of the pocket A of the curtain.
The purpose of the extensions or lugs 7 and 11 is to prevent catching of the curtain on the end of the rod when the curtain is being applied. This is possible in View of the absence of edges on the ends of the section, as the end 6 of the section is disposed par allel to the side walls of the pocket A. In addition to this the extensions serve as spacers to properly open the pocket or in other words to dispose the walls of the pocket in spaced relation to each other so that it is not necessary for all portions of the pocket of the curtain to engage the body portions of the section when the curtain is being applied, as the pocket is being opened to an extent greater than the diameter of said section. This feature also eliminates the possibility of the walls of the pockets 110 adhering; to each other and oflering further resistance to the application of the curtain to the rod.
Another important feature of this device is that the extensions 7 and 11 serve as stops to prevent accidentaldisengagement of the curtain When the curtain rod is being applied to the Window. In view of this, the lugs permit the operator to hold the curtain rod in any desired position When applying the curtain to its supports Without danger of the ends of the curtain slipping off the ends of the rods. This feature also eliminates the use of stop balls or knobs previously used on the ends of curtain rods. It is of course obvious that after the curtain is applied the pocket A of the curtain Will adjust itself according to the diameter of the body portion of the rod so that regardless of the fact that the extensions 7 and 11 are movable through the pocket of the curtain at the same time their use as stops for the curtain is not interfered with.
From the foregoing it Will be readily seen that this invention provides anovel form of curtain rod which is not only adjustable to accommodate the size of the Window on which it is used, but which saves considerable time and labor in the application ofthe curtain to the rod. The extensions 7 and 11 also serve as means to prevent accidental disengagement of the curtain rod from the Window should the rod be displaced with respect to its supports as longitudinal move ment to a great extent will be limited by the extensions. The invention also possesses ad vantages of simplicity and durability.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a curtain including a rod receiving pocket, of a curtain rod having its end portions extended in angular relation to said rod, and substantially in spaced parallel relation to each other, said extensions being each of such proportions with respect to the capacity of said pocket as to enable said extension to enter and separate the Walls of the pocket to permit unol structed movement of the curtain on the rod.
2. The combination with a curtain including a rod receivingpocket, of a rod having its ends extended in angular relation to said rod, the length of said angularly extended ends being lessthan the capacity of the pocket, either of said extensions beingadapted tOnGl'lliBI the pocket, both of said extensions being arranged to prevent disengagement of the curtain rod after the curtain has been positioned on the rod.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
