WOODWORKING TOOL.
Lacasse.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Applicationled September 28, 1920. Serial No. 413,309.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnminlcx R, S11-IU- GAnT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bakersfield, county of Kern, State of California, have invented a new and useful `Woodworking Tooi, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improve` ments in wood working tools and most particularly to that class known as combination tools.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed tool which is formed of a single piece of metal and has three different cutting edges so arranged and constructed that the tool may be easily, conveniently and effectively used as a hatchet, an adze or a draw knife.
Another object is to provide a. tool df the character described in which the several blades and cutting edges are arranged so that one edge does not interfere with the other when in use and the tool is properly balanced, whereby, it may be easily handled and quickly changed from one of its uses to another.
The invention possesses other advantages and features, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth, at length in the following description wherein l shall outline in full that form of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the present specification. In said drawings I have shown one form of the construction of my invention but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to such form, since the invention as expressed in the claim may be embodied in a plurality off forms.
Referring to the drawings: Figure l is a top plan view of the tool of this invention; Figure 2 is a front elevation of the tool; Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3%*3 of Figure l; Figure lis a sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Figure l.
In the present embodiment of my invention there is provided a central eye or handle socket (l) receiving a suitable handle (2) and provided on one side with an integral thin flat blade (3) extending in width longitudinally relative to the handle. A cutting edge (4C) is provided on the outer end of this blade and with said blade provides the hatchet element ofthe tool.
A flat thin blade (5) is extended from the opposite side of and formed integral with the eye or socket (l) being arranged transversely to the handle (2). This blade is curved rearwardly slightly to give the proper angle thereto for use of the tool as an adze. The outer end of the blade has a cutting edge (6) thereon extending at right angles to the edge (4t) and this edge (G) with the blade provides the adze element of the tool. Thus it will be seen that thetwo edges (a) and (6) are provided along the outer ends of the two blades with one longitudinally and the other transversely of the handle. The blades are extended from the eye (l) an equal distance and both are of substantially the same size and weight. This provides for the proper balance of the tool.
The lower edge of the blade is shari ened' to provide a draw-knife cutting edge 7) which latter extends substantially at right angles to the handle (2). This edge together with straight at blade (3) serves as a draw knife, the edge being so formed as to provide 'projections or shoulders (8) and (9) which serve as guards. The two blades and are correspondingly reduce-d as at (l0) and (11) where joined to the eye or socket so as to reduce the weight of the tool.
It will be apparent lfrom the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that the construction not only provides for facility of operation and economy in equipment by providing three tools in one, but lessen the labor and time usually required of woodworkers in their various cutting and shaping work.
l claim:
A wood working tool embodying in its construction a handle eye, a hatchet like blade formed on one side of the eye, said blade having a. draw knife edge along that edge of the blade which extends at right angles to the axis of the handle eye, said draw knife edge terminating short of the length of said blade and guard shoulders formed on said edge at opposite ends of the draw knife edo'e.
