SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,468, dated December 8, 1903.

ployed by carpenters and other mechanics known as try-squares, and hasfor its object to combine with an implement of this character an adjustable bevel-blade whereby angles of any degree may bedetermined and laid out upon the work and without in any manner interfering with the ordinary uses of the try-square; and theinvention consists in certain novel features of the construction, as hereinafter shown and described, and specified in the claims.
In the drawings illustrative of the invention, in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig.- 2 is a side elevation, of the implement complete. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the head of the try-square viewed from the inner side. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
The improved device consists of a baseblade and a head member formed of space portions 11 12, secured, as by rivets 13, upon opposite sides of the blade 10 at one end, as shown. The portions 11 12 thus extend laterally at each side of the blade 10 in the ordinary mauner of the head of a try-square, and the blade and head possess all the essential features and are capable of being employed for all the purposes for which such implements are usually employed.
The blade 10 will preferably be provided with a scale of inches and parts of inches, as shown, upon its outer edge and will be inclined at its free end, as shown at 14, and with one member of a rule-joint 15 at the juncture of the inclined portion and the back edge of the blade, as shown.
Connected movably to the blade 10 by the other member of the rule-joint 15 is a bevelblade 16, the latter having an inclined portion 17 corresponding to the inclined portion 14 of the blade 10 and with its free end 18 extending through the space between the head members 1.1 12, as shown.
The outer edges of theparts 11 12 and the blade 10 will be of the same length, and the free ends of the parts 11 12 will be formed at an angle of forty-five degrees, or in alinement with the extremities of the parts 14' 17, as shown, and the extremity of the bevelblade 16 will coincide with the outer faces of the parts 11 12, so that when the parts are disposed in their distended posit-ions, as'i'n Figs. 1 and 3, a right-angled triangle is formed with clearly-defined corners. To this end it is essential that the parts 11 12 shall be disconnected at their outer ends to an extent sufficient to permit the outer face of the blade 16 to extend at least flush with the outer faces of the parts 11 12, while at the same time means are provided by a transverse pin 19 for connecting the parts 11 12 a short distance from their free ends to prevent any tendency of the parts to spread and in a manner-not to interfere with the action of theblade 16, which has a small recess 20 to engage the pin, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. By this simple arrangement the blade 16 may be extended with its outer end flush with the outer faces and ends of the parts 1.1 12 and the latter edectually held from spreading.
The blade 16 will be preferably provided with a scale of inches, as shown.
The members 11 12 are provided with registering longitudinal slots 21 22, and the blades 16 will likewise be formed with a corresponding slot 23, so that a binding-bolt 24, provided with a disk-nut 25, may be employed to bind the parts together. Adjacent to the slots 21 22 longitudinal recesses 26 27 will be formed to receive the nut and head of the bolt 24, as shown in Fig. 4, so that no portion of the nut or boltprojects beyond the general surface of the head members. This is an important feature of the invention and adds materially to the value and efficiency of the device and obviates any interference of the binding-bolt with the operations of the implement.
The members 11 12 are provided with a degree-scale, (represented at 28,) so that the blade 16 may be set to any desired degree of the arc of a circle, and to enable the scale to be accurately used the scale-lines will be extended transversely across the inner edges of the parts 11 12, as indicated in Fig. 3.
By this simple means an implement is produced combining all the essential features of an ordinary try-square and of an ordinary adjustable bevel and without unduly increasing the weight or reducing the efficiency.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim is 1. In a combined try-square and bevel, a base-blade having a head member connected at right angles thereto and formed of spaced sides connected at one end to opposite sides of said blade and united at their other ends by a transverse stop-pin spaced from the free end of the head, and a bevel-blade movably connected by one end to said right-angled blade and having a recess adapted to engage said stop-pin, whereby the full length of said bevel-blade may be utilized, substantially as described.
2. In a combined try-square and adjustable bevel, a stationary blade having a head member formed of spaced sides connected at one end to the opposite sides of said stationary blade and at right angles thereto, a bevelblade movably connected at one end to said stationary blade and slidable by the other end between the spaced sides of said head member, and with its free end conforming to the angle between its hinged end and the free end of said head member, and provided with a recess adapted to engage said stop-pin, to limit the outward movement of the bevelblade, whereby the full length of the bevelblade is utilized, substantially as described.
3. In a combined try-square and bevel, a base-blade having a head member connected at right angles thereto and formed of spaced sides connected at one end to opposite sides of said blade and united at their other ends by a transverse stop-pin spaced from the free end of the head, said spaced sides having longitudinally-disposed transverse slots with recesses adjacent thereto sunken below the general surface of the sides, a bevel-blade movably connected by one end to the free end of said base-blade, and extending between said spaced sides and provided with a longitudinal slot, and a clamp-bolt engaging said slots and with its head and not operating in said recesses, substantially as described.
