STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BYRON CALDWELL, 0F OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA.
COMBINATION HAND-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 27, 1919. -Seria1No.273,410.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BYRON CALD- WELL, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada,
residm at Ottawa, in the county of Carleton an Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Hand-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combination hand tools, and has for its rimary object to provide an article of the c ass described wherein a number of tools or devices usually manufactured as separate articles may be combined in a single tool or device.
Another object of the invention is to provide an article of the class described whereby the variety of tools or devices required by mechanics and others in performing different kinds of work may be dispensed with, diminished or reduced.
' A further object of the invention is to provide an article of the class described whereby a number of operations usually performed by the use of a variety of tools or devices may conveniently and accurately and with equalefliciency be accomplished by the use of a single tool or device.
A further object of the invention is to provide an article. of the class described wherein a plurality of tools or devices of approved form may be incorporated in a handsaw and handle therefor, and the combination thereof to form together therewith a single tool or device adapted for skilled and general use, and wherein each and all of the different tools or devices entering into and forming the combination may be readily available at all times for convenient and accurate use'to perform their various func tions.
A further object of my invention is to provide an article of the class described wherein novel and improved means are employed to effect the combination of different tools or devices of approved forms into a single tool or device and to insure the accuracy and efliciency of the resultant combination tool or device when so constructed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an article of the class described which will be simple and durable in construction, convenient and accurate in use and invention resides in the novel arrangement illustrated may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. y
In the drawings forming part of this specification and in which like characters of reference designate like parts throu hout:
Figure l is aview in side elevation of a handsaw embodying the several features of my invention, and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the saw handle and portion of the blade- Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 designates a handle which may be composed of wood or other material, or metal suitable for such purpose, if desired, positioned on a handsaw blade 11 of any approved dimensions and secured thereto by means of bolt and socket rivets 12 passing through the saw blade and adapted to be brought into operative engagement by rotary motion manually or otherwise forcibly applied until rivet heads and bases are countersunk in or flush with the sides of the handle and thus present no projections beyond the sides of the handle.
The back 14 of the saw blade is so constructed as to form a straight edge throughout its entire length, and the handle 10 is so positioned and secured on the blade that the upper or corresponding back portion 13 of conformation.
On each of its sides and adjacent its back 14 the saw blade 11 is provided with a ta'bulated scale 15 showing usual characters to desi ate inch and fractional measurements.
Tl f: tabulations in this scale are alternative in form whereby measurements extend on one side .of the saw blade rearwardly from the-forward end of the blade to the forward edge 10 of the handle, and on the other side forwardly from the forward edge 10 0f the handle to the forward end of the blade. A dual scale is thereby provided on the sawblade as in the case of scales or rules commonly in use as separate tools or devices.
The handle 10 is so constructed that its back or upper edge 13 bears exact rectangular relationto its forward edge,10 whereby similar rectangular relation is established between the forward edge of the handle and the back M of the saw blade when the handle is positioned and firmly secured on the blade in the manner aforesaid, and a T-square similar to the approved form such tool or device is provided thereby.
On either side of he handle a metal plate 16, of any desired weight and dimensions and having rectangularly disposed arms 16 and 17 corresponding in their outer edges to the conformation of the back or upper and the forward edges of the handle, is provided as shown. These metal plates are attached to the handle and rigidly secured against accidental displacement by means of a plurality of copper or other metal rivets 19 passed through the saw handle and blade and finished on either side of the handle flush with the outer surfaces of the plates Tabulated scales 18 having the usual characters to denote inch and fractional measurements are also provided on the arms 16 and l? of the plates 16 whereby a further convenient rule or square is furnished similar to the approved form of such articles. 7
Positioned in the handle 10 and located within transverse bores 22 and 23 therethrough and through portions of the plates 16 and 17 are vertical and horizontal spirit levels 20 and 21 of usual form; whereby a convenient level, approximately similar to the approved form of such article manufactured and used as a separate tool or device, is provided.
From the foregoing it is believed that the advantages of my invention will be readily understood and appreciated, and it is claimed that a convenient combination of a plurality of tools or devices usuallymanufactured and used as separate articles has been effected in a simple and economical manner and in a manner to permit of accurate rise of each or any of the different articles in the combination.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In an article of the class described comprising a combination hand tool and in combination, a handsaw blade having straight edge conformation on its back edge and provided on its sides adjacent its back edge with tabulated scales having characters to denote inch and fractional measurements, a handle therefor, means for securing the handle to the blade, the back or upper and forward edges of the handle having exact rectangular relation, metal plates having rectangular arms conforming in contour to the back or upper and the forward edges of the handle positioned on the handle adjacent its back or upper and forward edges, means for attaching said plates to the handle, tabulated scales on said metal-plates having characters to denote inch and fractional measurements, there being transverse bores through the handle and portions of the metal plates and vertical and horizontal spirit levels in the handle located within said transverse bores.
2. In an article of the class described comprising a combination hand tool and in combination, a handsaw blade having straight edge conformation on its back edge and a charactered scale of measurements on each of its sides adjacent its back edge, a handle therefor having back or upper and forward edges in exact rectangular correlation, metal plates superimposed .on the handle adjacent its back or upper and forward edge and having rectangular arms conforming in contourto the back or upper and forward edges of the handle, said han- -dle being positioned on the blade with its back or upper edge corresponding to the back edge or straight edge conformation of the blade and with its forward edge in exact rectangular relation to said back edge or straight edge conformation of the blade, means for securing the handle in said position, means for securing the metal plates and rectangular arms thereof to the handle and the blade, charactered scales of measurements on said metal plates, there being transverse bores through the handle and portions of the metal plates, and vertical and horizontal spirit levels in the handle within said transverse bores, substantially gs described, as and for the purpose speci- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
