Meade@ GUSTAVE T. BURR, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COLLAR BAND.
Application filed March 26, 1923. Serial No. 627,558.
To @ZZ 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GUs'rAvn T. Donn,
a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar Bands, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to collar bands for shirts and particularly for mens shirts; and the object of the invention is to provide a collar band of the class specified, one of the front ends of which, the yend which is overlapped when in use with an improved button-hole construction, whereby a button placed in the button-hole of said end portion of the band will be backed by the material of the band, thus protecting the body of the wearer, and also preventing the accidental displacement of a button from said button-hole; a further object being to provide means for reinforcing that portion of the collar band provided with said button-hole, said reinforcing means being preferably formed integral with the material of said band; and with these and other objects in View, the invention consists in a collar band of the class described, which is` simple in construction, efficient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my im proved collar band, indicating the same mounted upon a shirt, and with part of the construction broken away and in section.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a blank from which my improved collar band is formed.
Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of yone portion of the bandin a partially folded position.
Fig. 4- is a detail view of the band in an extended position with part of the construction broken away and indicating the method of attaching the band to a shirt.
Fig. 5 is a partial section on the line of Fig. 4 on an enlarged scale; and
Fig. 6 is a partial section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4 on an enlarged scale.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing I have indicated in dotted lines at 10 the top portion of a shirt, and at 11 I have shown one of my improved collar bands attached to the shirt 10 or the neck portion thereof, and the band 11 is preferably made from a blank 12 similar to that shown in Fig. 2. said blank comprising two substantially similar side portions 12 and 14 adapted to be folded one upon another on the dotted lines 15, and the separate members 13 and 14 are adapted to be folded upon themselves or on the lines 16 and'17 respectively, before said parts are folded upon each other.
The separate parts 13 and 14 are provided at one end of the blank with two sets of button-holes 18 and 19, while the other end portion of the blank or the inenr ber 14 thereof is providedl with one set of button-holes 20, and the member 13 at said end portion of the blank is provided with an extending strip or flap 21, which is also adapted to be folded upon itself on the line 16. Centrally of the member 14 is another lpair of lbutton-holes 22.
In forming the collar band the separate Amembers 13 and 14 are first folded on the lines 16 and 17 upon each other as partially shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, after which the strip or iiap 21 is folded on the line 23 inwardly upon the folded member 13. The end portions of the collar band 11 are then stitched transversely when lying back to back and the separate parts of the band are turnedor folded inwardly at right angles to the line 15 one upon the other to form finished ends to the neck band, one of said ends being shown at 24 in Fig. 5 of the drawing, and the neck portion ofthe shirt is placed between the members 13 and 14 and between the strip or iiap 21 and the member 13 as clearly shownin Fig. 6 of the drawing, and the neck band is stitched to the shirt by a line of stitching 25 which starts at the end portion of the collar band provided with the double button-hole 18 and 19 to the point 26 in Fig. 4, and through the neck band and the member 13 at the back of the shirt shown at 27, but not through the member 14, and then starts at the point Q8 and extends through both of said members and the shirt to the point 29 where the stitching is again omitted in the member 14. rlhe separate members 13 and 14 are stitched together adjacent to the fold thereof as shown at 30, and it will be noted that the line of stitching 25 will form centrally of the back of the neckband and on the outer face thereof, a pocket 31 which permits of the insertion and removal of a collar button in the button-hole 22 of the member 14, said button being backed by the .member 13. and a strip 32 secured thereto The provision of the buttonhole at the back of the collar band, broadly speaking,
is not new and is only shown and describedV to show a complete neck band made according to my invention. The collar band construction at one end, the end 11a of the band, is the distinctive feature of my invention and as constructed said end portion is provided with a pocket 33 which opens outwardly through the bottom edge of the collar band to permit of the insertion of a collar button into the button-hole 2() in the member 14 of the collar band and said button is backed by the member 13 of theV collar band and reinforced by the strip or flap 21 as clearly shown in Figs. 3 to 6 inclusive. ln other words, when the collar band has been secured to the neck portion of a shirt, a collar button mounted in connection with the end portion 11a of said band will be backed by the member 13 and strip 21 of the collar band, to prevent the back of the button from coming in contact with the body'of the wearer, and the button-hole construction at said end portion of the band will also operate to prevent the accidental detachment of the button from the shirt when the shirt is removed from the body of the wearer. It will be understood that the button-hole at the other end portion of the band 11 extends through both of the members 13 and 14 thereof as is the usual custom and while I have shown the reinforcing strip or flap 21 as constituting an integral part of the band and have shown other details of construction for carrying my invention into effect, it will be understood that I am not necessarily limited to these details and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
