To all whom it may concern Be it known t at I, JAMES L. MURPHY, a citizen of the nited States, residin Chicago, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars, of which the following is a description.

My invention belongs to that general class of articles known as collars, and particularly that type termed soft or semi-soft or neglige'e collars. It refers more particularly to collars which are not stiflly starched, and in which it is desirable to arrange to support and seourethe meeting ends. In such collars it has been customary to sew a button upon the outermost face of the neck-band at a suitable point, and to button the proj ecting or overlying flap of the opposite end of the collar thereto, in addition to button ing the collar both in the rear and front to the neck-band of the shirt. This method is objectionable by reason of the fact that the button thus attached is in the way in laundrying the collar, and is very often broken. With this type of collar there is also the tendency for the same to wrinkle or bend down and trouble is often caused by the collar shrinking in laundrying. The invention has among its objects the production of a collar of the kind described that is simple, convenient, comfortable, attractive, durable, and satisfactory under all conditions. Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilledin the art from the disclosures herein made.

To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, 1 represents the neckband of the collar and that portion coming in contact with the neckmay be termed the inner face, and that portion which is outermost from the neck may be termed the outermost face. There is also provided at the upper edge 3 a down-turned outer fold 2 of the desired shape and size. Obviously the collar may be made of any suitable material and of the desired shape or design, as well as size.

The neck-band is ordinarily composed of a plurality of plies of material laid one upon the other and stitched or sewed together to give body to the same. I have shown the band provided with the usual button hole 1 at the back and with button holes at the extreme ends. In the type of collar shown, the extreme ends 5 and 7 are arranged to overlie in the usual manner and. be secured to the neck-band at the front of the shirt by a suitable button. I have shown button holes 6 and 8 in the ends for engaging with the button, and in this connection it x may be mentioned that I prefer to make the button holes substantially with two holes or openings in alinement 6 and 6 and 8 and 8, that is, in pairs or in duplicate, so that when the collar shrinks the outer holes may be used if necessary. That is to say, when the collar is first used, the holes 6 and 8 may be used, but after the same has been laundried and has shrunk, the holes 6 and 8 ma be employed. a i

2. In a collar of the kind described and in combination, a neck-band having the two ends of the same constructed to overlie, and provided with duplicate buttonholes for engaging a button carried by a shirt-band, a stay detachably carried by said neck-band to one side of the buttonholes adjacent one end and provided with engaging means. the op posite end of the neck-band provided with means for cooperating with said engaging means. 7

' 3. In a collar of the kind described and in combination, a neck-band having the two ends of the same constructed to overlie, and

provided with means for attaching the same to a shirt-band, stays arranged one adjacent each end of the neck-band and detachably secured thereto, one of said stays provided with engaging means, the neck-band at the opposite end provided with a hole for coopcrating with said engaging means and detachably securing the two ends of the collar together thercat.

4. In a collar of the kind described and in combination, a neck-band having the two ends of the same constructed to overlie, and provided with means for attaching the same to a shirt band, stays arranged one adjacent cach end of the neck-band and detachably secured thereto, one of said stays provided with integrally formed engaging means, the neckband at the opposite end provided with means'coiiperating with said engaging means for detachably securing the two ends of the collar together thereat.

5. In a collar of the kind described and in combination, a neck-band having the two ends of the neck-band constructed to overlie, and provided with means for attaching the same to a shirtband, said neck-band provided with an overlying exterior :part, stays arranged one adjacent each end of the said neck-band between the band and the overlying portion, means for detachably securing'said stays to said neck-band, and means carried by one stay for engaging the opposite end of the neck-band and securing the same thereto.

6. In a collar of the kind described and in combination, a neck-band having the two ends of the neck-band constructed to overlie, and provided with buttonholes in pairs for attaching-the same to the front button carried by a shirt-band, said neck-band providcd with a folded over exterior portion, stays arranged one adjacent each end of the said neck hand between the band' and the folded over portion, means for detachably securing said stays to the collar, and means carried by one stay for detachably engaging the opposite end of the neck-band and securingthe same thereto.

7. In a collar ofthekind described and in liO combination, a neck-band having the two ends of the same constructed to overlie, and provided with buttonholes in pairs for attaching the same to a shirt-band, the holes of said pairs lying in a single line, a stay detachably carried by said band adjacent one end and provided with engaging means, the opposite end of the band provided with means for cooperating with said engaging 10 means.

8. In a collarof the kind described and in combination, a neck band having the two ends of the same constructed to overlie, and provided with buttonholes for engaging the 15 buttons carried by a shirt-band, a pocket carried by said neck-band adjacent one end, and extending transversely thereof, and a stay detachably carried in said pocket to one side of the buttonhole at said end and provided with engaging means, the opposite end 20 of the neck-band provided with means for cooperating with said engaging means.
