and has for one of its principal objects to provide such a lining as shall be eflicient and economical, which shall present as pleasing appearance and which shall allow convenient access to the interior of the hat for the purpose of trimming and adjusting the same to the head of the wearer.

The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of various devices and parts, as shown in the accompanying drawings and fully described in this specification and set forth in the claims thereof. 1

In the said drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a hat provided with my invention, a portion of the hat crown being broken away to show the arrangement of the lining inside the hat; Fig. 2 is a View of the side crown constituting a part of my invention, showing the same opened up .(the' 80 extreme right hand portion thereof being removed); Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the said side crown as it appears when closed together as it is when inserted into the hat; Fig. 4c is a plan view of the tip forming a part of my invention, a part of the same being broken away; Fig. 5 is a side View of the said tip; Fig. 6 is a. side view of the connecting member for the tip and side crown, showing one form thereof; Fig. 7 is a plan view of the same; Figs. 8 and 9 are side views of modified forms of said connecting member; Fig. 10 is a view of the side crown, tip and connecting member, assembled together, but turned inside out so as to better show the connection of the parts; Fig. 11 is a sectional view of Fig. 10 showing more clearly the manner iii-which the parts are connected together, and Fig. 12 is a side view of another modification of the connecting member.

In carrying my invention into effect in the embodiments thereof which I have selected for illustration in the said drawings and description in this specification, and rereference numeral 17. I prefer to make-thisfrom a piece of material cut on the bias, as thereby greater elasticity is obtained, and in the preferred form the ends thereof are slanting as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 10. At the top of the side crown is provided an elastic securing device 15, for connecting the same with the connecting member hereinafter to bedescribed, or if preferred a draw string of the usual or any desired type may be employed, or other means may be provided for so securing the side crown and the connecting member together. I may also provide a snap fastener such as is shown at 12 in Figs. 2 and 3, or any other suitable means adapted to secure the ends of the side crown together when the different parts of the lining are assembled. In use the side crown is attached to the hat by stitching or otherwise securing the lower edge of the same to the inside of the hat, near the brim, in a manner which will be well understood.

The connecting member, shown more particularly in Figs. 6 and 7 and in modified form in Figs. 8 and 9, in its simplest and preferred form consists of a-strip of celluloid or other suitable material, bent into the form shown in Figs. 6 and 7, so that it produces a ring-member having flanges 13 between which is a groove 14., adapted to receive the elastic or draw string 15 of the side crown member and thereby secure the two members together.

The modified form of connecting member shown in Fig. 8 consists of a strip of material more flexible than the celluloid or other material contemplated for the form shown in Figs. v6-and 7, the edges of which are held extended by wire rings 16, and the portion of the material intermediate said rings is adapted to be drawn inwards forming a groove 14 similar to that already described and which performs the same function. In Fig. 9 I have shown a form similar to that of Figs. 6 and 7, except that the strip'of celluloid or similar material is shown cov ered with a fabric.

In connection with the parts already described I employ a ti member which is shown more particular y in Figs. 4 and 5, and in position in Figs. 1, 10 and 11. This comprises a piece of material 18, provided at its circumference with an elastic cord or band 19, or if desired a draw string or similar device, which operates to draw the edges inward forming a cap like device as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. When the parts are as sembled elastic is inserted into the groove 14 of the connecting member, as may be seen more clearly from Figs. 10 and 11.

By this means the separate members com-- prising the hat lining are secured together, in a manner which enables the tip member, either with or without the connecting memher, to be easily and quickly removed whenever it is desired to introduce the band into the inside of the hat for the purpose of manipulation in connection with trimming the hat or for any other purpose, or for inserting a. tip of different size for the purpose of adjusting the hat to the head of the wearer. If desired a mirror may be used in connection with the tip, and either secured thereto or simply placed above the contracting elastic l9.

In the modified form of connecting member shown in Fig. 12, I form the same of two separable parts, of celluloid, cardboard, or other suitable material, stamped or pressed into the form, shown, the two part being sprung or snapped together into the form shown in the drawings.

The advantages of my invention will be obvious. In most forms of hat linings as at present constructed, in order to have access to the interior of the hat for trimming or similar purposes, it is necessary to remove the lining, or at least to partially loosen the same from its attachment to the hat; in the lining constructed according to my invention, however, all that is necessary is to remove the tip alone, or the tip and the connecting member, and draw the upper part of the lining downward out from the hat, upon which the hand can be inserted through the opening left thereby and ready access to all parts of the interior of the hat thereby attained. It will also be seen that the use of my invention facilitates the fitting and adjustment of a. hat to the head of the wearer, as the substitution of a smaller or larger tip, as required, is very easily accomplished. By having the tip separate from the grooved member, the device may be manufactured more economically. Moreover tips may be supplied in a variety of colors or made up from cloth in stock of different colors as may be desired to match or contrast colors elsewhere used on the hat, and interchanged on the same grooved member. This is especially desirable in hats having gauze crowns.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:

1. In a hat lining the combination of a side crown, a tip and an annular grooved connecting member separate from the tip, said tip being provided with means for detachably engaging said grooved annular member.

2. In a hat lining the combination of a crown, a tip and an annular grooved connecting member separated from the tip, said crown being provided with elastic means for detachably engaging said grooved annular member.

3. In a hat lining the combination of a side crown, a tip and an annular grooved connecting member separate from the tip, said tip and side crown being respectively provided with means for detachably engaging said grooved annular member.
