This .invention relates to new and useful improvements in headwear and more particularly Vto that type of headwear known as cooks or chefs caps.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a cap of the character set forth which is adjustable to t Yheads of different shapes and sizes and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and sell to the end that such a cap may be discarded when it becomes soiled.
Another object of theinvention is to provide a cap of the stated character which is neat and imparts an appearance of cleanliness to the wearer and to the immediate surroundings.
These and other objects of theinvention and the features and details of the construction and assembly thereof are set forth hereinafter and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 'i is an enlarged View in section illustrating .a modified manner of assembing a cap embodying the invention. Y
Referring now more particularly to the drawing,
a cap made in accordance with my invention consists essentially of a head band and crown which are designated by reference numerals i and 2 respectively. In the present instance, the head 4() band I is composed of` a sheet of paper or other suitable material 3 which is faced on one side thereof with a suitable fabric 4. The fabric 4 is preferably Vstarohed orsized to render the band comparatively stiff yet permit flexing thereof to a degree sufficient to the end that the functions of a head band in a cap of the present nature may be realized. The longitudinal edge portions of the fabric faced sheet thus produced are folded or doubled onto the unfaced side or surface of said sheet as shown in the drawing to form upper and lower flanges 5 and respectively, the latter serving as a sweat band.
The crown 2 is preferably elliptical to conform wmore closely to the shape of the head and is com- 55 posed of thin relatively open mesh-like fabric (Cl. lil- 195) such Vas cheese-cloth or the like, the lower depending edge 'I of which is turned outwardlyand upwardly and, with the exception of a short length at one end to permit adjustment of the head band, is secured to said band between the outer portion Ia thereof and the upper flange .5 by means of stitching or the like 8 which also functions to secure said flange 5 to said outer portion Ia of the band so that said flange will not be loosely disposed within the latter and may overlie the edge l of the crown to aiford'a more secure and protected anchorage for the latter to the head band I.
In the present instance a tie element designated generally as Si comprising a flat wire strip lll p of greater length than the height of the outer portion Ia of the head band and covered with suitable material such as paper or the like I I formed to include a tab portion I2 is attached to one end of the head band `I by securing said tab portion i 2 to the inner or unfaced surface of said ban-d beneath the ange portions 5 and 6 thereof in such manner that the covered end portions of the wire IU of the element 9 project or extend a substantial distance` above and below the portion I a of the head band.
The head band I with the crown attached thereto as described aboveis bent into more or less circular form with its opposite end portions longitudinally overlapping in such relation that the end of said head bandi to which the tie element 9 is attached resides outwardly of or overlies the other end portion of the head band and these overlapping end portions are maintained in slidable relation with respect to each other by folding or doubling the projecting covered end portions of the wire II! of the tie element 9 over the longitudinal edges of the other orinner end portion of said head band as shown in the drawing, the covered wire portion II) of theitie ele- .f
ment S being folded onto the fabric faced outer surface of the head .band I as shown in Figures 1, v 2 and 3 of the drawing or inwardly onto the unfaced'inner surface of the head band I and flanges 5 and 6 thereof as shown, for example, in Figures 5 and 6 of the drawing, according to the, desire of the particular purchaser or user of the cap. On the other hand, if desired, the lower edge portion of the inwardly lying end portion of the head band I may be disposed between the lower flange portion 6 of the outer overlapping end portion of said band and the Inner face of the. portion Ia thereof'in the manner shown` in Figure '7 of the drawing, in which event these relatively overlapping portions are maintained in slidable relation as `previously described by means of the tie element 9 except that in this particular instance, the lower portion of the wire portion l thereof engages over the flange 6 of the outer lapped portion of the band instead of the flange of the inwardly lying end portion thereof.
A modified form of cap embodying my inven* tion is shown in Figure 5 of the drawing, wherein the crown is formed of a fiat piece of material which is folded transversely centrally thereof and stitched or otherwise united as indicated at I3 to form a crown 2a of substantially rectangular inverted pocket-like configuration. The lower or depending edge of the pocket-like crown 2a thus formed, as in the case of the crown 2, conforms substantially to the longitudinal dimensions of the upper depending flange 5 of the head band l and with the eXceptionof a short length adjacent one end of said band is co-extensively secured to the latter between the outer portion ia thereof and said flange 5 in the manner hereinabove set forth. In addition to the particular crown 2a just described, the cap may be made to more closely simulate a military service cap by suitably printing thereon strips of substantial width as indicated at ifi to give the appearance of the usual edge binding present in caps of this general nature.
While a particular embodiment of the invention has been set forth herein for descriptive purposes, it is not intended that said invention shall be precisely limited thereto but that modifications and changes may be incorporated and ernbodied therein within the scope of the annexed claims.
I claim:
1. A cap of the character described comprising a head band formed of relatively stiff material having its edge portions doubled onto the inner side to provide comparatively narrow upper and lower flanges, the inner side of one end portion of the band longitudinally overlying the outer side of the other end portion thereof and arranged for relative sliding movement with respect thereto, a crown having a depending edge portion outwardly upturned and disposed between the head band and the upper flangethereof, means securing the upturned edge portion of the crown, the head band and the upper fiange together with said up-turned edge portion intermediate the latter and 'the adjacent surface of said band, and means secured in the outwardly overlying end portion of the head band under the flanges thereof and having exposed portions for engagement over the upper and lower edges of said band to retain said end portions in circumferentially slidable relation.
2. A cap of the character described comprising a head band formed of relatively stiff material having its edge portions doubled onto the inner side to provide comparatively narrow upper and lower flanges, the inner side of one end portion of the band longitudinally overlying the outer side of the other end portion thereof and yarranged for relative sliding movement with respect thereto, a crown having a depending edge portion outwardly upturned and disposed between the head band and the upper fiange thereof, means securing the upturned edge portion of the crown, the head band and the upper ange together with said upturned edge portion intermediate the latter and the adjacent surface of said band, and means including a wire tie element secured in the outwardly overlying end portion of the head band, said tie element having oppositely projecting end portions doubled onto the inner upper and lower edge portions of said band to retain said end portions in circumferentially slidable relation.
3. A cap of the character described comprising a head band of relatively stiff material having its longitudinal edge portions doubled onto the inner unfaced side of said sheet to provide comparatively narrow upper and lower flanges, the bottom edge of one end portion of the band mounted in the lower flange of the other end portion of said band and arranged for relative sliding movement with respect thereto, a crown having a depending edge portion outwardly upturned and disposed between the head band and the upper flange thereof, means securing the upturned edge portion of the crown, the head band and the upper flange together with said upturned edge portion intermediate the latter and the adjacent surface of said band, and means secured in the outwardly overlying end portion of the head band under the flanges thereof and having exposed portions for engagement over the inner upper and lower edge portions of the overlapping end portions of said band to retain said end portions in circumferentially slidable relation.
4. A cap of the character described comprising a head band formed of relatively stiff material having its edge portions doubled onto the inner side to provide comparatively narrow upper and lower flanges, the bottom flanged edge of one end portion of the band mounted in the lower flanged edge of the other end portion of said band and arranged for relative sliding movement with respect thereto, a crown having its depending edge portion outwardly upturned and disposed between the head band and the upper flange thereof, means securing the upturned edge portion of the crown, the head band and the upper ange together with said upturned edge portion intermediate the latter and the adjacent surface of said band, and means including a wire tie element secured in the outwardly overlying end portion of the head band under the flanges thereof, said tie element having oppositely projecting end portions doubled inwardly onto the upper and lower edge portions of the overlapping ends of said band to retain said ends in circumferentially slidable relation.
