Description

G. H. WOODS COLLAR DEQ, i
Filed Jan. 14. 19,22
)Patented .i i
GEORGE JEI. WOODS, 0F SOMIERVILLJE, MASSACHUSETTS.
CDLLAR.
Application filed January 14, 1922. Serial No. 529,134.
l To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY WOODS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Collars, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to collars of that class known as turned over collars which are provided with an outer member or turned over portion and an inner member or band integral with the outer memberand usually madenibstantially the same width or height as the outer member, Sad inner member being provided at its back with a button hole and at its ends with overlapping tabs also provided with button holes.
Collars of this construction are now commonly used and may be regarded as a standard for turned over collars.
It is desirable that collars ofthe standard construction referred to, should fit the neckv of the wearer closely in order to obtain the neatness in appearance desired and when said collars do lit the neck closely as desired, difficulty is experienced in using a four-inhand tie with them, as the closeness of the two members of the collar at the back is such fas to offer a very considerable frictional resistance to movement of the tie between them in adjusting the latter. This resistance is especially pronounced when the tie 1s of that character known as a knitted tie.
The present invention has for its object to A provide' an improved one-piece turned over collar of standard construction, which vretains the close ttingand dressy characteristics of the standard collars, and also possesses the desirable function of permitting the four-in-hand tie to be easily and quickly adjusted without disfiguring the collar or breaking; stretching or otherwise 1n]ur1ng the tie.
To this end, the band or inner member of the collar of standard construction is provided with slots or openings which are located on opposite sides of the rearbutton hole in proximity thereto and .which extend from the bottom edge of the inner member beyond the button hole and preferably to near the top edge of said innermember where the latter joins the upper edge of the when the collar outer member to form the top fold of the collar. Y
The slots or openings referred to provide the inner member or band with a buttonhole-containing member which is practically hinged. at its upper end and is free at itslower end, so that when strain is placed on the tie the greater portion of the buttonhole-containing member will be moved away from the outer member by the tie thereby affording a greater space between said members at the back and reducing the friction to such extent as to permit the tie to slip freely and without excessive strain being placed thereon.
The particular features Iof the invention will be pointed out in the claim at the end of this-specification.
Fig. 1 is 'a view representing the improved collar in its position of use, and
Fig. 2, an enlarged detail of the back portion of the collar in a more or less developed position.
Referring to the drawing, a represents the improved turned-over collar comprising an outer member 10, and an inner member or band 12 integral therewith and having at its ends overlapping tabs 13 provided with button holes 14, andiprovided with a rear button hole 15.
The collar as thus far described may be considered ofstandard construction in which the inner member or band 12 is of substantially the same width or height as the outer member.
In accordance with this invention, the
The slots or openings 16 convert the por- 100 tion of the inner member between them into a button hole-containing-member 18, which is practically hinged at 1ts upper end where it joins the top portion 19 of the inner member, .moved away from the outer member 10 under the influence of the four-in-hand tiev (not shown) as above described. A rllhe slots or openings 16 may be formed thereto and which are extended and has its lower end free to be is made, or they may v formed in made-up collars of standard vconstruction, Which enables made-up collars -to be converted into the improved collars by the owners when so desired. a
Claim.
A turned-over collar provided with an outer member and with an inner member or band connected with said outer member and of'substantially the height or Width of said outer member and provided at its rear portion with a button-hole and with a recess or opening on each side of the button-hole and 1n closeproximty thereto, each ofsaid openings extending from the bottom to near the fold of said collar'I and having a width 15 equal to at least-one-half of its height for l -a distance of at least two-thirds of the height of said collar, said openings being confined to the rear half of the collar, said recesses providing -spaces in the innerl band to di-y 20 minish the friction of the tie in adjusting the same While retaining a material length of the inner band member on-opposite sides of said openings for guiding the tie.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my 25 name to this speciiication.
GEORGE H. Woons.
