COLLAR BUTTON.
Application filed January 80, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collar Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved but ton for use on collars, cuffs and the like, the general object of the invention being to make the button so that it can be easily passed through the buttonholes and also to provide it with locking means for looking it in the hole.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the button in closed position.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the button in open position.
Figure 3 is an edge elevation thereof.
Figure L is a view showing the application of the button to a collar.
As shown in these views, the button consists of a base 1, a stem 2 and a head 3. I
prefer to form the button from a blank of material and to then bend the stem at its junction with the base and head so that a substantially Z-shaped member is formed. The head is connected with the stem adjacent one end and the other end of the head is pointed to facilitate its passing through a buttonhole. A locking member 4 is pivots ally attached to the large end of the head and this member is of substantially the same shape as the head. It is provided with a lip 5 so that when the member is in a position under the head to permit the head to be passed through a buttonhole, by pressing on this lip the member can be swung from under the head so as to form an extension of the head and thus hold the button in the Serial No. 689,572.
hole. When in open position, one edge of the locking member will bear against the stem which acts as a stop for preventing further movement of the member.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that when the locking member is in position under the head, the part of the button which is to be passed through the buttonholes is offset from the stem with its free end pointed so that it can be easily passed through the holes. After the button is in place, the locking member is moved outwardly by pressure upon its lip until it extends in the same plane as the head and thus forms a head of the same length as the base which firmly holds the button in place.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A button of the class described comprising a base, a stem and a head and a looking member pivotally connected to the under side of the head at one end thereof so that it can be moved to a position under the head to permit the head to be passed through a buttonhole and then moved to form an ex- {lelislOll of the head to hold the button in the 2.
