UNITED STATES 1,465,740 PATENT OFFICE? VANCE SHEARER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO BLU BLAZE MOTOR, SPECIALTIES CURE, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
IGNITION TIMER 'ron in-rnaNAL-coMBUsrroN ENGINES;
App1ication filed November 4, 1921., Serial No. 512,702.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, VANCE SHEARER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, 1 county, and State ofNew York, have invented an Improvement in Ignition Timers for Interna1- Combustion Engines, of which the followin fis a specification.
ment upon the invention shown and claimed in my copending application filed April 4th,
'1 921,Serial No. 458,459, its objects'being tojlessen the cost of manufacture, facilitate the assembling of the brush and its carrier,"a'nd to provide a moresecureiholder The details of the invention are hereinlathe accompanying drawing: I 'Fig." 1 is an'inner end view of a timer embodying my invention, the shaft being in section.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the broken line 22of Fig. 1. V
Fig. 3 is a face View of the brush carrier detached, and
4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the broken line 4 4 of Fig. '3. Similar reference characters denotellike parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing 10, indicates the body of the'timer which is substantially hollow, and externally of a shape similar to the resent standard Ford timer, and is provided with the usuallug 11, having an opening 12, to receive the connection for adjustment to advance or retard the spark.
This body is preferably of insulating material molded or pressed to shape having an angular raceway 13, into which are seated quadrantially spaced fixed contact blocks 14,
15, 16, and 17, which are preferably pressed into place at the time of molding the body member, the outer surfaces ofsuch contact blocks being flush with the surface of the raceway 13., Two metallic blocks 18 and 19 are also set into the raceway 13, but not extending to the surface thereof.
Spaced binding posts 20 and 21 are mounted on the top of the body member 10,
tact with the two terminals passing through openings'in the and their terminals22 and 23 pass through openings in said body'and come into con- 14 and 15.
- The binding posts 24 and 25 for connee tion with the two lower contacts 16 and 17,-are also mounted upon the top of the body 10, :between the binding posts 20 and 21. Conductor wires or strips 26 and 27' from the lower contact blocks 16-and 17 tov the contactblocks 18 and 19, into contact with which theterminals 28 and 29 of the binding posts 24 and 25, arebrought, these body 10. 1
The wires or strips 26 and 27, are preferably pressed into place at the time ofmolding the body member, andiextend past the upper contact blocks '14 and'15, but insulated'therefrom. I
30 indicates the timer shaft, one end of which extends intothe hollow body 10.
The carrier for the brush or movable contact-31', comprises a circulardisk-orplate fixed upper contact blocks 32, having a central hub '33, keyed or otherwise fixed to the shaft30, within the'hollow body 10. The outer edge of the disk is preferably provided with an outwardly turned annular flange 34. This flanged disk prevents oil reaching the brush or the raceway and fixed contacts thereon.
The disk has a thickened portion 35, extending from the hub 33, to the periphery of the disk, that portion adjacent the edge of the disk on'its front surface being of the greatest thickness and having a central opening 36, which is enlarged belowthe front surface of the disk forming an annular shoulder 37 within the opening, at the top, below which shoulderthe opening is screwthreaded.
The brush or movable contact 31 fits loosely intothe smaller part of the opening 36, and is provided with an annular flange 38, at its rearend, which flange takes against 7 tion of the opening 36; the hollow of the plug 39, is of slightly greater diameter than the flange on the brush, so that when the spiral spring 40, is compressed by the brush in riding over the raceway 13, the rearend ot' the brush passes into the hollow of the plug, providing for a resilient bearing of the brush upon the raceway and fixed contacts.
A look nut 41 be employed upon the end of the shaft 30, forward of the carrier hub I claim as my invention.
1. In an ignition timer, the combination of a body having an interior annular race way, a rotary sha'tt extending into the body, a circular plate, fixed to said shaft and having a tln'eaded recess adjacent its edge with an opening therein 01 smaller diameter lorn'iing an. interior annular shoulder in the end o'l said recess, a flanged brush projecting through sa id opening with its flange bearing against said shoulder, a hollow ex- (eriorly threaded plug screwed into said recess, and a spiral spring within the hollow oi said plug with one end bearing upon the flanged end (it the brush.
In an ignition timer, the COil'lblDtltlOIi of: a body having an interior annular raceway, a rotary shaft extending into the body, a circular plate 1norided with a hub keyed to said shaft and having a thickened portion adjacent its edge at one point with a threaded recess at the rear end, an opening in the front of smaller diameter than the recess whereby an interior annular shoulder is formed within the recess, a flanged brush projecting through said opening with its flange bearing against said shoulder,a hollow extcriorly tnreaded plug screwed into said recess, and a spiral spring within the hollow of said plug bearing upon the flanged end of the brush.
In an ignition timer, the combination of a hollow body of insulating material interiorly rabbeted forming an annular raceway, spaced fixed contacts seated in, said raceway 'iush with its surface, metallic blocks into said rac vay below its surface, binding posts whose terminals engage ce 1 in of the fixed contacts, binding posts whose terminals en ge said metallic blocks intermediate th first named binding posts, conductors extending from said metallic blocks into contact with the remaining fixed contacts, a rotary shat't extending into the body, a circular plate fixed to said shaft cowering the opening in the rear of the body and having a threaded recess adjacent its edge with an opening therein of smaller diameter torn'iing an interior annular shoulder in the inner end ot said recess, a flanged brush projecting tl'irough said. opening with its flange bearing against said shoulder, a hollow exteriorly threaded p-lu screwed into said recess, and a spiral spring within the hollow of said plug with one end bearing upon the flanged end oi. the brush.
Signed by me this 26th day of October,
VANCE SHEARER.
