IGNITION TIMER FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.

To all whom it nmy'conoem:
Be it known that I, VANCE Smmnnma citizen of the United States, and resident of the borou h of Manhattan, in the city,
county, and State of New York, have incarrier. and one object is to provide abrush that will have a smooth and even bearing upon the fixed contacts during the revolution of the timer shaft; another object is to prevent oil reaching the brushor its raceway and the fixed contacts. and further to provide a secure holder for the brush, and to facilitate the placing of the timer in 'position for use, without injury to the brush, which with brushes of the ordinary charactor heretofore in use is sometimes difficult owing to the position occupied by the timer, particularly on the Ford cars.

The body 10 of the timer, is substantially hollow, and externally of a shape similar to the present standard Ford timer, and is provided with the usual lug 11, having an opening 12, to receive the connection for adj ust ment to advance or retard the spark. This bodymembcr is preferably of hard fiber or like insulating material, and is molded or pressed to shape, being at one side interiorly rabbeted forming an annular raceway 13, into which are seated quadrantally spaced fixed contact: blocks 14. 15, 16 and 17, which are preferably pressed into place at the time of molding the body member, the outer surface of such contact blocks being flush with the surface of the raceway 13. Conductorwircs or strips 26 and 27 pass from the lower contact blocl rs 16*and 17, to the contact'bloclzs .18 and19, into contact with which the terminals 28 and 29, of the binding posts 241 and 25, are brought. these terminals passing through openings in the body 10. The strips or wires 26 and 27, are preferably pressed into place at the time of molding the body member, and extend past the upper contact blocks 1-42; and 15, but in sulated therefrom.

The carrier for the brush or movable con tact 31, comprises-m circular disk or plate 32, fixed to or integral with a hub 33, keyed or otherwise fixed to the shaft 30. within the hollow body 1.0. This collar is provided with a right angle annular flange 38, which rests upon the faceof the disk when the collar is forced down into said recess.
This collar is also provided. with an in ternal annular shoulder 39, against whichv the annular flange 4.0, on the bottom of the brush 31, contacts, the brush being insertedv into the collar from the under side tlienreof,
and projecting outwardly therefrom, but positively retained in position by said flange and shoulder.
