* I ir a r at SAMUEL RIVELIS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR WEARING APPAREL.
Application filed October 18, 1921. Serial No. 508,574.
T rt .0 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL Rivnms, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Nearing Apparel, of which the following is a specification, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates generally to fastening devices for securing wearing apparel, and'more especially to fasteners useful in connection with ladies foot wear.
Ladies low shoes or pumps, of the type in vogue at the present time, are held to the foot by straps which extend across the instep. These straps are ordinarily permanently fastened to one side of the pumps While their free ends are detachably secured to the other side. The paramount object of my invention is to provide, for the purpose last mentioned, a simple and efficient means capable of being easily attached, readily manipulated in securing and detaching the instep strap, and which after being secured, will not yield readily to being accidentally disengaged. I
I also aim to enhance the utility of fasteners, of the special type referred to, by
provision, for use in association therewith,
of ornamentation capable of being readily interchanged in accordance with the taste of the wearer.
Other objects and attendant advantages will become readily apparent from the detailed description of the two typical forms of my invention which follows.
In the drawings, Fig. I is a perspective view of a ladys low shoe or pump showing the manner of use of a fastening device conveniently embodying my invention in one form.
Fig. II is a detail sectional view on a larger scale showing the two members of the fastening device in engaged relation.
Fig. III is a perspective view of one of the members of the device in the form of a headed stud.
Fig. IV is a similar view of the com plementary engaging member of the fastener; and
Fig. V is a perspective view of a modified form of the complementary engaging member of the fastener.
Referring first to the embodiment illustrated in FigsnI to IV inclusive, it will be observed that a fastening device of my invention comprises a headed member in. the form of a stud 1 adapted, in the present instance, to be secured in the end of the instep-strap S of the low shoe or pump P,
and an engaging member 10 adapted to be secured to the flap F at one side of the pump.
At a sli ht distance behind its head 2, the stud l has an integral collar 3 and its shank is threaded as at 4 for the attachment of interchangeable ornamental buttons such as shown at 5. In applying the member 1, its shank is thrust through the strap S near the free end of the latter and the button 5 thereafter screwed onto the protruding portion of said shank with the result that the material of the strap is engaged between the collar 3 and the button.
The companion engaging member 10 of the fastening device is, in this embodiment, shown as being rectangular, in form and made as a sheet metal stamping with a raised central portion 11 which is flanked at opposite sides by comparatively narrow flanges 12, 12. Said flanges are apertured as at 13, 13 so that the member 10 may be readily secured to'the flap of the pump by sewing or otherwise.
The raised portion 11 of the member 10 has a slot 15 whose mouth is flared as clearly shown in Fig. IV, and which serves as an approach to a terminal notch 16. In securing the strap, the head 2 of the memher 1 is inserted within the raised portion 11 of the member 10. Incidentally, the portion of the shank between the head 2 and collar 3 of the member" 1 is advanced through the slot 15 (this being facilitated by virtue of the flaring of the slot) and forced pastthe restriction at 17 and into the notch 16 and thus yieldingly retained in the latter. I
Referring now to the modification of Fig. V, the complementary member there shown has an embossed or raised body portion 20 which is pierced by an opening compris ing a lobe 21 of a diameter sufliciently large to readily admit the head 2 of the element 1, and a notch 22, for engaging the shank of the latter member, which is communicative with the aforesaid lobe through a restricted slot or passage 23. The modified engagement member differs further from the previously described form in that it has integral depending prongs 2a, 24 which are adapted to be turned over toward each other after penetrating the material Whereto the member is to be fastened.
While I have shown and described my invention as especially applicable to shoes, it is obvious that it may be employed with equal advantages for other purposes as well.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A fastening device comprising a threaded shank having a flange at one end, an ornamental button applied to the shank to grip a member to be secured between the button and flange, a head on the shank spaced from the flange, and a complementary member including spaced flanges to grip the shank between the head and flange and adapted to receive the parts at one end of the flanges in tight engagement, with means forming part of the complementary member for attachment to another member to be secured.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this third day of October, 1921.
