UNITED. STATES 1,609,081 PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BAPTIST FREYSINGEB, OF NEW BRITATN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO NORTH &
I J'UDID MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
FASTENER.
Application filed October 27, 1925. Serial No. 65,176.
This invention relates to improvements in' fasteners and more particularly'to that type in which two members areconnected and a closure effected by means of interlocking units connected with the respective members, said members being caused to interlock by means of a slide device.
' One object of the present inventionv is to provide fastening means of: the character specified which shall be simple in construction; which may be manufactured economically, and which will operate quickly and to bring together the members to be secured and simultaneously cause the interlocking of the fastening devices carried by said members.
vV-Vith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 is an elevation showing an em bodiment of the invention: I
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of one of the fastener units;
Figure 3; is a view of a blank from which a fastener unit is made;
Figures '4 and 5 are detail views of the slider;
Figure 6 is a detail view of the top stop Figure 7 illustrates the bottom stop and connecting device.
The improvements are particularly well adapted for use as shoe fastening means, but they are also applicable for fastening separable members of garments, bags or other devices. 1
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, two flexible supporting "members such as tapes or stringers 1, law employed for carrying the interlocking devices .3 and these tapes or stringers are to be suitably secured respectively to the respective separable members to be fastened together,--the separable portions of the boot portion of a shoe upper, for example. The fasteners on one tape or stringer are identical in construction with the fasteners on the other tape or stringer, and the fasteners on one tape or stringer alternate with those on the other.
Each fastener unit 3 may be made of sheet. metal from a blank such as shown in Figure 3. The body portion 4 of this blank is made withv a slot 5' having corrugated walls forming teeth or projections 6. Proectmg-centrally fromone edge of the body 1 1s a neck 4, and at the outer end of this neck, a head 7 is located, thus forming shoulders at 8. The outer end of the head 7 1s recessed as at 9 forming lugs 10 at each outer corner of said head. The body port on 4 of the blank is bent on the dotted l 1nes 11, thus forming toothed or corrugated aws 12, which receive the fabric of the tape or stringer between them, and flanges 13 disposed at respective sides of the tape, so that when the fastener is ap lied to the tape under pressure, the toothed or -corrugated inner edges of the jaws will become embedded into the fabric and the latter will be firmly clamped between the flanges 13, and thus the fastener will be securely and immovably applied to the tape or stringer.
The head portion of the blank is so bent that said portlon will form a bifurcated hook 14 (F1g.'2) which projects downwardly and slightly forwardly relatively to the body or clamping portion of the fastener unit.
When the fastener units are secured to the respective tapes or stringers, with the units on one tape or stringer alternating with those on the other, and the fasteners of the respective tapes are brought together 7 of the respective tapes shall have been v brought .into interlocking relation, an effectual closure for the shoe or other article to which the tapes may be secured, will have been accomplished.
The slide 15 may comprise two plate members 16, 16 having depressed portions 16 and spaced apart and connected in spaced relation by atongue or yoke 17 integral with the upper edges of'the plate members 16. The slider has a somewhat tapering form and portions of its side edges are turned "inwardly and form inwardly projecting flanges 18 which-extend to the lower ends of said plate members. Thus passages are formed between the plate members for the accommodation of the two series of fastener units and tape portions to which they are secured, said passages'flaring laterally at the upper portions of the slider.' A loop 19 is secured to the slider and-with this loop, a finger button or disk 20 is loosely connected.
On at least one of the tapes or stringers, a stop device 21 is secured for limiting the upward movement of the slider and preventing it from accidental removal. The upper stop device 21 may consist of a plate bent upon itself and clamped securely to the tape or stringer, saidplate being provided with one or more projections 22 (two such projections being shown in the drawings to be engaged by the slider.
When the improvements are employed as closure fastening means for a shoe, the lower end portions of the two tapes or stringers are permanently united by a connector 23 having a projection 24 which serves as a bottom stop for the slide. The connector- 23 may comprise two plates 25, 26, the latter having tongues 27 which embrace the intermediate portion of the plate 25 and cause the connector to be tightly clamped to the lower end portions of the tapes or stringers and permanently connect the same.
Various slight changes might be made in details of construction and the character of material used, without departing from the spirit of the invention or limiting its scope, and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my'invention what I claim as newvand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Fastening means for separable members comprising two sets of fastener units, each fastener unit comprising a body portion to receive a supporting means and adapted to be clamped to the supporting means, ahead portion, and a neck portion connecting the head and body portions, said head portion having apartdownturned beyond the end of'the neck portion, said downturned part having two lugs spaced apart.
2. Fastening means for se arable members comprising two sets of astener units,
each fastener unit comprising a body portion to besecured to a supporting element, and ahook-like portion including a downturned head and a neck, said head having a recess in its free end forming two lugs.
3. Fastening means for separable members comprising flexible supporting members, a series vof fastener units secured to each supporting member, each unit comprising a slotted body portion to embrace a supporting member, and a hook-like portion. including a downturned head and a neck connecting the head and body portion, said head having two lugs projecting downwardly from its outer end, and a slide member for interlocking the units on one supporting member with units on the other supporting member.
4. Fastening means for separable members comprising two stringers and a series of fastener units secured to each stringer, each fastener unit comprising a body portion having a slot forming toothed jaws to be embedded in a stringer, a hook-like portion including a downturned head and a neck connecting the same with the body portion, said head having a recess at the downturned end forming spaced downwardly projecting lugs.
5. Fastening means for separable members comprising two series of fastener units, each fastener unit made of sheet metal and having a body portion forming two jaws to embrace a supporting means, a neck projecting from one edge of said body portion and being entirely within the plane of the body portion, and a head integral with said neck and projecting downwardly, said head hav ing downwardly projecting spaced lugs at its free end.
6. Fastening means for separable members comprising-two series of fastener units. each fastener being made of sheet metal and including a body portion having a slot with toothed Walls and forming jaws and flanges at its side edges at an angle to said jaws, a neck projecting from one end of said body portion centrally between the sides thereof, and a head projecting downwardly and forwardly from said neck and forming shoulders at respective sides of the latter. said head having spaced lugs at its free edge.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
JOHN BAPTIST FREYSINGER.
