Patented Feb. 15, 1949 nnfirso STATES PATENT caries DETACHABLE SHOE HEEL ORNAMENT Thomas Gilmour, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application July 13, 1946, Serial No. 683,391
Claims. 1
The present invention concerns ornaments for the heels ofv ladies shoes and refers more particularly to the type comprising a body adapted to overlay a portion of the heels peripheral-surface and comprising portions substantially embracing said periphery, together with fastening means adapted to engage the front face of the heel.
An object of the present invention is to provide an ornament of the type described which shall be quickly appliable and removable from the heel so as to constitute a separate item of apparel which may be worn or not as dictated by the nature of the other items of the costume.
A further object is to provide a heel ornament of cheap construction so that a variety of such ornaments in different designs may be owned at a small expenditure of money.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a heel with the preferred form of the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary bottom elevation thereof.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged front elevation partly in section, of a fragment of the preferred form of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the latter applied to a heel.
Fig. 7 is a section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a further modification of the invention.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the preferred embodiment of my invention is the ornament l0, comprising a body portion II which is shown as a band of light sheet metal carrying exterlorly a design I! which may be applied thereto in any convenient and well known manner. The body II should be at least moderately flexible in order to snugly fit various heels to which it may be applied.
Ornament I0 is shown applied to a heel l3, and for the purpose of this description the front (the slightly concave surface I of the heel will be called the font) and the downwardly and inwardly tapering, generally parti-cylindrical surface l5 extending on the sides and back of the heel and bounded by the corners l6, will be called the outside surface of the heel.
Pivotally connected to each end of body H as by the hinges I! are the clips i 8, shown as substantially rectangular fiat rigid bodies comprising the sharpened prongs l9 extending substantially perpendicularly from their outer border portions. 7 Each hinge ll comprisesthe central pin 20 and wound about pin 20 within hinge I7 is the torsion coil spring 2|, the ends-22 and 23 of which are soldered, as at'24, to clip l8 and body If respectively. A finger catch 25 extends from each clip 18.
In operation and use, the ornament I0 is ap- A plied to heel l3 so that a body H encompasses the outside surface l5 thereof, the hinges I! being even with corners I6 and clips l8 extending inwardly of face '4 and towards each other. Prongs l9 are urged against face lliby springs 2|, the direction of action of which is indicated by the arrows in Figs. 2 and 3.
Prongs l9 should be pushed into face I' l manually, and are thus effective to prevent motion of any kind in any part of ornament 10, while springs 2| prevent the prongs coming out.
Springs 2| further exert a circumferential tension on body II as the reaction to the torsional compression exerted on clips 3.
Ornament l0 may be easily removed whenever desired by engaging the finger catch 25 with the fingernail and loosening prong-s l9.
A modification of the invention is shown in Figs. 5,- 6 and "I, wherein a band shaped body comprises elastic end portions 3| furnished with the male components 32 of snap fasteners. Heel 33 is furnished with the female components 34 of the snap fasteners. Utmost freedom of choice of material for body 30 is enjoyed in this form of the invention, since body 30 may be semi-rigid as body I l, or may be of textile material, either elastic or non-elastic.
Raised ornamentation such as artificial jewels 35 may be applied in any well known manner to body 30.
It is of course understood that the bodies H and 30 may be of irregular outline, and that one or more of them may be used on the heel at the same time if so desired.
Fig. 8 shows a body portion. which covers entirely the surface of the heel which it fits. The ornamentation 4| is applied over the entire area of the body portion as shown. Snap fas front surface and an outside surface, an ornament. body adapted to encompass said outside is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States letters Patent is:
1. A heel ornament comprising, in combination, a body portion adapted to encompass the outside surface of a heel, a clip portion pivotally connected thereto, and a spring actuating said clip portion against said heel.
2. A heel ornament comprising, in combination, a body portion adapted to encompass the outside surface of a heel, a clip portion pivotally connected thereto, prongs extending substantially perpendicularly from said clip portion, and a spring actuating said clip portion against said heel.
3. In a heel ornament for a heel comprising a front surface and an outside surface, an ornament body adapted to encompass said outside surface, a clip pivotally connected to each end of said body, and spring means engaging said body and said clip to urge the latter against said front surface.
4. In a heel ornament for a heel comprising a surface. a clip pivotally connected to each end of said body, and spring means engaging said body and said clip to urge the latter agail'mtsaid front surface, said clip further comprising finger catch means.
5. In a heel ornament for a heel comprising a front surface and an outside surface, an ornament body adapted to encompass said outside surface. a clip. pivotally connected to each end of said body, and spring means engaging said body and said clip to urge the latter against said front surface, said spring means comprising a torsion coil spring located within the pivotal connection between said body and said clip.
