Hou/'ann r. FREDERICK,
OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PUIIP-ACTUATING MECHANISM.
Application filed May 29,
To all fio/fom muy concer/11,:
ABe it known that l, Howanu F. FRED- nnicii, a citizen of the United States, residingl at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Pump-Actuating Mechanism, of which the following` is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to pump actuating mechanisms for actuating upright reciprocating well pumps.
lt is the object of the invention to provide a mechanism, adapted to be driven through a belt or the like, for transmitting the rotary motion of the driving element into a reciprocator y movement parallel to the pump rod, and to accomplish this 'transmission without subjecting the pump rod to a laterally acting thrust such as results from use of the usual connecting rod or pitman.
ln attaining this object, the invention contemplates mounting a jack shaft upon a frame attachable to the pump casing and driving the pump rod from said shaft through a crank actuated cross-head engaging guides parallel to the pump rod, suitable provision being made for connecting said cross-head to the pump rod.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is hereinafter described and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,
F 1 is a view in front elevation of the improved mechanism operatively associated with an upright pump, the latter being indicated in dash lines.
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. is a rear view of the actuating mechanism.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same.
ln these views the reference characters 1 and 2 respectively designate the pump-rod and casing of a pump such as is commonly employed for raising water from a well. The improved actuating mechanism for said pump has a unitary mounting upon a base 3. pair of spaced posts 4. formed preferably of angle iron. rise rigidly from the front portion of said base. Said posts respectively carry bearings 5. in which is journaled a horizontal shaft (i having the fast and loose pulleys 7 and 8 thereupon. Between said posts and jointly mounted thereupon is a bracket 9 carrying a bearing 1() for a shaft 11, extending transversely beneath the shaft 6. The latter shaft is adapted to drive the former through worm 12 and worm-wheel 1922. Serial No. 564,541.
13. From the rear portion of the base 3 there rises a pair of spaced slide rods lt upon which a head 15 is adapted to reciprocate. For actuating said head, a crank-arm 16 mounted fast upon the shaft 11 terminally pivotally carries a cross-head 17 slidably engaging in a slot 1S in the head 15. The rods 14: are held rigid at their upper ends by brackets 19 embracing said ends and secured to the posts t. The head 15, as is best seen in Fig. 41, is of a U-shape, the slide bearings engaging the rods 14 being formed at the junctures of the parallel arms of said head with the connecting portion thereof. The space between said parallel arms accommodates the pump casing 2. To said arms there is bolted (or otherwise rigidly secured) a pair of upwardly extending angle bars 20, to the upper ends of which are secured a pair of strap-iron connections 211oppositely engaging the pump-rod 1 and bolted thereto as indicated at 22. The upper eX- tremities of the posts 4C are rigidly secured to the pump'casing 2 by a bar 23 intermediately bent to embrace said casing and having its ends respectively bolted to said posts. Between the parallel portions of said bar there is clamped the bracket 241 embracing the pump casing in opposed relation to the bend of the bar 23.
Considering now the operation of the described mechanism, When the shaft 6 is driven the drive is transmitted by the worm 12 and worin-wheel 18 to the shaft 11 at a considerably reduced speed. For each revolution of the shaft 11 the crank-arm 16, through engagement of its cross-head 17 in the slot 18, effects a complete reciprocation of the head 15. rlfhe latter, guided by the rods 14E, is compelled to slide in parallelism with the pump rod. The angle-bars 20 and connections 21 transmit the reciprocating motion of the head 15 to the pump-rod 1. Owing to the parallel motion of the rod 1 and the head 15 actuating said rod, lateral strains upon the pump rod, such as would tend to bind the same, are avoided.
Furthermore the invention provides a compact pump actuating mechanism having a unitary mounting and adapted to be quickly established in driving relation with a pump or disconnected therefrom.
`What I claim is:
1. In a pump actuating mechanism` the combination with a base of a pair of posts rigidly rising from said base, a drive shaft combination with a hase. a pair of posts rising from said hase, a drive shaft horizontally mounted upon said posts, means for rigidly connecting the upper ends of said posts to a pump casing, a vertically slidable head having arms Jfor embracing the upright casing of a pump, means respectively carried 1oy said arms for connecting the same to a pump-rod, and means driven by said shaft for reciprocating said head.
In testimony whereof I sign this specilication.
HOWARD F. FREDERICK.
