SHEET COLLECTING AND ASSOCIATING MECHANISM.
Application led January 18, 1922. Serial No. 580,104.
To all whom-t 'may concern Be it known that l, HowAnD M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and usefulImprovement in Sheet Collecting and Associating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The object of m invention is to provide a novel sheet collecting and associating mechanism in which the product of the press is collected and associated with previously printed extra sheets, which may be either covers or inserts or both; the same feeding means being employed for introducing either covers or inserts or both, to be combined with the products of the press, thereby obviating the necessity of using separate feeders for the covers and inserts as has heretofore been common.
A practical embodiment of my invention s represented in the accompanying draw- .ngs, in which the sheet collecting and associating mechanism herein illustrated is adapted to collect a full roduct of forty eight pages and associate therewith the previously printed extra sheets as a cover or an insert; or to collect two one-half products of twenty four pages each and associate 3o therewith the previously printed extra sheets as either covers or inserts, as may be desired.
Fig. 1 represents a detail vertical section showing the delivery and associating cylinders.
Fig. 2 represents a detail vertical section showing the combined collecting and associating cylinder and the first and second extra sheet transfer cylinders as arranged for handling one-half products.
Fig. 3 represents a detail vertical section showing the third transfer cylinder.
Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal vertical section taken through the mechanism at the ends of the cylinders with the side frames removed, the parts being arranged for the run of a full product.
Fig. 5 represents a similar section showing the parts changed for the run of-one-half products.
Fig. 6 represents a longitudinal vertical section taken midway through the mechanism with the parts arranged for the run of a full product.
Fig. 7 represents a similar view showing the arts arranged for the run of one-half pro ucts.
Fig. 8 represents the the several cylinders.
I have shown a pair of coacting rotary cutters 1 and 2 of well known construction, arranged to receive superimposed narrow webs from the press and to cut the webs transversely into groups of sheets which are fed through the coacting guide rollers 3 and 4 to the collecting and associating cylinder 5. This cylinder 5 is shown as provided with three sets of head grippers 6 and three sets of side grippers 7 The associating cylinder 8 which is arranged to receive the sheets from the cylinder 5 and under certain circumstances from the third extra sheet transfer cylinder to be hereinafter described, is shown as being provided with five sets of head grippers 9.
The delivery cylinder 10 for receiving the collected and associated product and transferring it to any suitable folding mechanism, not shown herein, is shown as being provided with two diametrically opposed' sets of head grippers 11.
Portions of two extra sheet feeding mechanisms are represented by 12 and 13, each of which feeding mechanisms may be used for introducing previously printed extra sheets, either as inserts or as covers, as may be desired.

A fixed cam 22 is arranged in position to operate the grippers 6 on the cylinder 5 to receive the groups of main press sheets from the. feed pulleys 3 and 4. A movable cam 23 is operated by a rotary cam 24, fixed to the shaft 25-of the first transfer cylinder 14. This cam 23 is arranged to control the operation of the grippers 6 of the cylinder 5 for transferring the product to the associating cylinder 8 at the proper time. The rotary cam 24 is a one-lobed cam when a full product is being run, as shown in Fig. 4, and is a two-lobed cam when a onehalf product is being run, as shown in Fig. 5.
A movable cam 26 is operated by a rotary cam 27 on the shaft 28 of the second transfer cylinder 15 for operating the grippers 6 on the cylinder 5 for receiving the extra sheets from the second transfer cylinder 15 at the proper time. This rotary cam 27 is a one-lobed cam when a full product is being run, as shown in Fig. 4, and is a twolobed cam when a one-half product is being run, as shown in Fig. 5. A. movable cam 29 is operated by a rotary cam 30 on the shaft 31 of the third transfer cylinder 16 for controlling the operation of the grippers 9 on the associating cylinder 8 to receive the extra sheets from the cylinder 16 at the proper times. rlhis cam is a one-lobed cam when a full product is being run, as shown in Fig'. 4, and is a two-lobed cam When a one-half product is being run, as shown in Fig. 5. A movable cam 32 is operated by a rotary cam 33 on the shaft 34 of the delivery cylinder 10, which cam 32 is arranged in position to operate the grippers 9 on the associating cylinder 8 for receiving the products from the collecting and associating cylinder 5 at the proper times. This rotary cam 33 is a one-lobed cam when a full product is being run, as shown in Fig. 4, and is a tWo-lobed cam When a one-half product is being run, as shown in Fig. 5. A movable cam 35 is operated by a fixed cam 36, see Fig. 1, for controlling the operation of the grippers 9 on the associating cylinder 8 for transferring the products from the cylinder 8 to the delivery cylinder 10 at the proper times. Fixed cams 37, 38 are arranged m position to operate the grippers 11 on the delivery cylinder 10 for receiving the products from the associating cylinder 8 and for delivering the products from the cylinder 10' to any suitable folding mechanism, not shown herein.
The sets of side grippers 7 are controlled by fixed cams 18", whereby the side grippers may be closed onto the groups of sheets when it is desired to open the head grippers for the reception of the extra sheets.
It Will be observed that When a full product is being run the grippers 18 and 19 on p the second transfer cylinder 15 are arranged 90o apart, as shown in Fig. 6, and when a one-half product is being run the grippers are arranged 180O apart, as shown in Fig. 7.
With a full product being run, in which the previously printed sheets from the feeder 12 are covers and from the feeder 13 areinserts, the cover is fed to the cylinder 5 and the insert is fed to the cylinder 8, as will vbe hereinafter more fully described.
lil/lith a one-half product being run, in which the previously printed extra sheets from both feeders are covers, the covers are fed from both feeders to the cylinder 5; and Where the previously printed extra sheets are inserts,'the inserts are fed from both feeders to the cylinder 8, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The train of gears for driving the several parts is denoted by 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54. 55, 56, the driving gear 56 of the third transfer cylinder being removable for the purpose to be hereinafter described.
I will first describe the operation of the mechanism Where a full product is being run With both a cover and a center page in sert: The cover is fed from the feeder 12 to the first transverse cylinder 14: from thence to the second transfer cylinder 15, and from thence to the collecting and associating cylinder 5 as the first sheet of the collection. The insert is fed from the feeder thence to the third transfer cylinder 16, and
from thence to the associatn cylinder 8 Where it will be associated on te cylinder 8 with the full product of the press together with the cover sheet. This cylinder 8 will present the full product to the cylinder 10 from which it will be delivered to any suitable folding mechanism, not shown-herein.
I will next describe the operation of the mechanism when a one-half' product is being run with a cover onl The cover from the fee er 12 is transferred -to the collecting and associating cylinder 5 through the first and second transfer cylinders to be associated with one one-half product, and the cover from the feeder 13 is transferred to the collecting and associating cylinder 5 through the second transfer cylinder 15 to be associated with the next succeeding one-half product. These one-half products are taken by the cylinder 8 and transferred to the delivery cylinder 10, and from thence delivered to the folding mechanism, not shown herein. When running the half products with covers only, the third transfer cylinder 16 is rendered inoperative by removing its driving gear 56. The second transfer cylinder 15 having its two sets of grippers 18 and 19 in this instance, arranged diametrically opposite as shown in F i0. 7.
2ID will next describe the operation of the mechanism when a one-half product is beingrun with inserts only:
