SHEET COLLECTING AND AssoCIATINe MECHANIsM.
To all 'whom it magma nearer Be it knownthatI, HOWARD. 'M. BARB R, a citizemof the United States,- andresident of Stonington, inithe 'eounty of New Lon- 5 don and State cofiOonne'cticut, have invented :a new and v -useful glrnprovement in Sheet Collecting a and Associating. ;Mechanism, of which thefollowing. is a specification.
In sheet collecting and associatingamech anisin it isevery diflicnlt to hold the sheetsfin register1 on the. collecting. and. associating cylinder as the grippers open to collectj'the sheets and open :to" transfer the sheets. This is especially truer where a number of sheets are to be collected and-associated and transferred and where the sheets are heavy The. object of my invention is to proyide novel means for insuring the proper:'ho1d ing of the sheets on the cylinder against slipping out of register whilesbeing collected, associated and transferred 'saidmeans including.- a rotary .carrierhaving end and side grippers which 3 cooperate to collect a number of sheets fedfrom one source, $11,011,. for instance, as a source of Inamwebsheet supply, and toco1nb1ne..therew1th angextra sheetfed from another. sourceysuch forinstance, .as a .cover: sheet another, cylinder:

' ig. 4 is a section taken in the plane of the line lV-IV of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a detail section showing one of the s1de grippers and one of its operating cams. A V y ,One or more webs pass over the web feed roll 1 and downwardly through the pair of coacting cutters 2, 3, and guides 4, 5, to one of three sets of grippers 6 on the main web sheet feeding cylinder 7.
The combined collecting and cover assoc1at1ngcyl1nder-8 is herein shown as provided with three sets of end grippers 9 and three sets of corresponding side grippers 10, the side grippers being located a con slderable distance back of their end grippers so as to engage the sheets at about midway their length. A l l ljhe' cylinder 11 is an extra sheet feeding cyllnder arranged to feed one or more extra sheets to each of the collecting and assoclating surfaces of the cylinder 8. In the present instance, this cylinder 11 is arranged to feed cover sheets to the cylinder 8 at the proper intervals to be associated with the collected main web sheets, as will hereinafter appear.
The cylinder 11 is provided with a set of end grippers 12 arranged to take the covers from a suitable feed table 13 and transfer them to the end grippers 9 of the combined sheet collecting and associating cylinder 8.
The sheet stop 1 1forthe sheets on the table 13 is operated by a cam 15 fixed to rotate with the cylinder 11;
An extra sheet feeding and product transfer cylinder 16 is provided with a set of grippers 17. Extra sheets as for instance, inserts,- are fed from thetable 18 to the grippers 17 The sheet stop 19 for thetable 18 is operated by the cam 20 fixed to rotate with the cylinder 16. I
' A fixed cam 21 is arran ed in position-to open; the grippersfi on the feeding cylinthe end roller 32 on the part 28.
controlled by the pins 24, to close the grippers 12 on the cover sheets as they are fed from the table 13 to open the grippers to transfer the cover sheets to the end grippers 9 of the cylinder 8.
Each set of end grippers 9 on the cylinder 8 is opened by the engagement of the stationary cam 26 with the gripper stud or roller 27 at one end of the cylinder 8, every revolution of the cylinder to collect main web sheets from the feeding cylinder 7, and is opened every one and one-third revolutions of the cylinder 8, by the engagement of the two-part movable cam 28, 29, with the gripper stud or roller 30 at the other end of the cylinder 8 to first transfer its col: lected and associated main web and cover sheets to the grippers 17 of the cylinder 16 and to then receive and grasp a cover sheet fed from the grippers 12 of the cover feed ing cylinder 11. The part 28 of this twopart cam is operated by a cam 31 carried by the cylinder 16 which engages a stud The part 29 of the twopart cam is operated by a cam 33 carried by the cover feeding cylinder 11 which engages a stud or roller 34 on the part 29. Springs 35, 36, serve to return the parts 28,29, of the cam to their normal positlons out of the path of thestud or roller 30 of the end grippers 9.
The side grippers 10 of each set on the cylinder 8 are held normally closed by springs 37 and are opened by the engage- 7V ment of stationary cams 38 with the gripper studsor rollers 39 when the end grippers 9 are opened to collect the main web sheets from the feeding cylinder 7. These side grippers 10 are again opened by the cams 1-0 when the end grippers 9 are opened to transfer the collected and associated cover and main web sheets to the cylinder 16. These last named cams 40 are sufficiently long to hold the side grippers 10 open until they pass the point where their end grippers take the cover from the feeding cylinder 11. These cams 38 and 40' serve to swing the side grippers out be yond the sides of the sheets as the side grippers pass the points where the main .web.
sheets and covers are taken as well as Where the collected and associated cover and main coacts with the pins 44: and 45 to openthe grippers 17 to deliver the collected and QSSO".
ciated cover, insert and main web sheets to the folding mechanism 46, 17, and to close:
the grippers 17 onto the insert sheet as it is fed from the table 18 theret0.-
From the above description it will be seen that when a certain set of end grippers 9 on the collecting and associating cylinder 8 have been opened to transfer the collected andassociated cover and main web sheets to the grippers 17 of the cylinder 16, on top of the insert to be associated therewith, the cam part 29 will hold the grippers 9 open until they receive the cover from the grippers 12 of the cylinder 11, when the end grippers are permitted to close on the cover and carry it aroundinto position to receive thereon the first part of the collection of main web sheets fed from the cylinder 7. The side grippers close on the cover as the end grippers open to collect and thereafter close on the sheets which'are on the cylinder 8, during the several revolutions of the cyl inder. These side grippers also close on the sheets as the end grippers are opened to transfer the collected and associated cover and main web sheets to the cylinder 16.
In the arrangement of the parts herein shown and described, the cylinders 7and 8 rotate one and one-third revolutions for every revolution of the cylinders 11 and 16.
While I have disclosed my invention as applied to a three-way collecting cylinder arranged to collect four sheets or groups of sheets, it is obvious that I do not Zwish to limit myself to this particular arrangement, but i What I claim is:
