SHEET-ASSOCIATING MECHANISM.
Application filed January 6, 1925.
The object of my invention is to provide a very simple and effective mechanism which will produce various combinations of main or body sheets fed from one source with extra sheets fed from one or two sources of extra sheet supply, and deliver the so associated products at one or two delivery points, as predetermined.
My invention more particularly includes a series of cylinders arranged. to be operated in whole or in part, either to feed successively previouslyprinted cover sheets from both sources of extra sheet supply, combine them with successive groups of freshly printed main or body sheets and deliver the so associated products alternately to two dif ferent delivery points; or to feed successive previously printed cover sheets from one of said sources of extra sheet supply, combine them with successive groups of the freshly printed main or body sheets and deliver the so associated products successively to one of the said delivery points; or to feed cover sheets from one of the said sources of extra sheet supply and insert sheets from the other of said sources of extra sheet supply, combine the cover and insert sheets with successive groups of the freshly printed main or body sheets and deliver the so associated products successively to one of the said delivery points.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which the figure represents a diagrammatic view of so much of a sheet associating mechanism as will give a clear understanding of my invention.
The two sources of previously printed extra sheet supply are denoted by 1 and 2 and the source of freshly printed main or body sheet supply is denoted by 3. The two product delivery points are denoted by l 2L1lC1 5.
The rotary coacting cutters 6 and 7 are provided with the usual knives S and 9 for severing sheets of predetermined lengths from the freshly print-ed main web.
The two extra sheet feeding cylinders are denoted by 10 and 11, the two associating cylinders by 12 andv 13, the two delivery cylinders by 14 and 15 and the transfer cylinder by 16.
In the arrangement herein illustrated the Serial No. 852.
feeding cylinder 10 has a single set of grip sheets from the source 2 thereto, and to coact with the single set of grippers 25, carried by the transfer cylinder 16, which in turn are arranged to coact with the grippers of the cylinder 13 and the single set of grippers 26 of the delivery cylinder 15 under certain conditions. he delivery cylinder let is provided with a single set of grippers 27 arranged to coact with the grippers of the cylinder 13.
Coacting friction pulleys 28, 29 are located between the rotary cutters 6, 7 and the cylinders 12, 13 feed the freshly printed main or body sheets in register as they pass from the said cutters to the said cylinders.
Examples of the various products which may be produced by the use of the above described associating mechanism in whole or in part, are as follows:
1. Previously printed covers are fed alternately to the cylinder 12 by the feeding cylinders 10 and 11 from the sources of extra sheet supply 1 and 2, and each cover sheet is combined with a group of four freshly printed main or body sheets and transferred to the cylinder 13. From the cylinder 13 the so associated products are alternately delivered to the delivery points 4 and 5, folding tables, for instance, the cylinder 14 serving to deliver alternate products to the delivery point 4 and the cylinders 16 and 15 serving to deliver the alternate products to the delivery point 5.
IT. Cylinders 11. 16 and 15 are thrown out of operation. Cover sheets are fed by the cylinder 10 from the source of extra,
sheet supply 1 successively to the cylinder 12 and the first group of main sheets is taken by the cylinder 12 and the full collection consisting of an extra sheet and two groups of four main sheets each are carried to the delivery point 4; by the cylinders 13 and 14.
III. For collected products with covers and inserts, the cylinder is rendered inoper'at-ive,-tlie cover sheets are fed in from the source 1 by the cylinder 10 to the cylinder 12 and the insert sheets are fed in from the source 2 by the cylinders 11 and 16, the cylinder 12 receiving thecover and one group of main sheets and the cylinder 13 receivingtheinsert sheetyifrom the cylinder 16 for association with two groups of four main sheets each and the cover at the transfer point betweenthe cylinders 12 and 13. The full product is then delivered to thedelivery point lloythe cylinder 14.
I have not shown the means for rotating the several cylinders, the means for operating the grippers, nor the means for rendering; certain of. the cylinders inoperative, as all ofthesemeans maybe of well known or ap proved construction, readily understood by personsskilled, in the art.
It iseyident that Various changes may be resorted to in the Construction, form and arrangement of theseveral parts without departing from thespiritand scope of my invention; hence, I do not wish to limit myself to the particular embodiment herein shown, but
What I claim is A source of main sheet supply, two sources of eXtra sheet supply, two extra sheet feed cylinders. two associating cylinders, a transfer cylinder and two delivery cylinders arranged to be operated in whole or in part either to associate successive cover sheets fed from both sources of extra sheet supply with successive groups of main sheets and deliver the products alternately to two dif ferent points; or to associate successive cover sheets fed from one source of extra sheet supply with successive groups of main sheets and deliver the products to one of said points; or to associate successive cover sheets fed from one source of extra sheet supply and successive insert sheets fed from the other source of extra sheet supply with successive groups of main sheets and deliver the products to one of said points. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention,I have signed my name this second day of January, A. D. 1925.
HOWARD M. BAR-BER.
