stares Parametric;
ALFRED e. R.` RUROWSKI, or BROOKLYN, Nnw YORK, assreNoR 'ro UNDRRwoon frYrRwRrrRR COMPANY, or New YoRR, N. Y., a CORPORATION or DELAWARE.
, TYPERIT-ING MACIEINE.
Application filed August 12, 191.9. Serial No. 317,042;
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I., ALFRED G. F. KUROW- sin, a citizen of the United States, formerly a citizen of Germany, residing in Brooklyn :3 Borough, in the county ot' Kings, city'and State of New `York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the itollowing is a speciication.
This invention relates to key-tops for typewriter key-levers, and an object is to provide a readily detachable key-top, and one which can be removed and replaced without the use of tools. l
A Jr'eature of the invention relates to the provision of a cup, mounted on the keystem, and a ring which engages the cup, and is detachably connected to the stem. Preferably, the cup is freely mounted on the key- ?.o stem, so that the ring serves to hold the cup in place.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear. 1
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure l is a perspective view of a keystem, showing my improved top applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the keystem.
Figure 3 is a front View.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the keystem alone, showing the slots with which the spring detents of the key-ring engage.
Figure 5 is a sectional view.
Figure 6 is a composite view, in perspective, of the key-cup, key-paper and glass.'
Figure 7 is a bottom view ot the key-ring.
rlhe key-lever 1 is provided with a keystem 2, and engaging the top oi' the key-stem 4o is a key-cup 3, which may be of the usual form. lSaid cup, however, does not tit tightly onto the key-stem, but :freely engages the same. The cup has the usual flange 4. ln order to hold the key-cup in position on the 1.5 key-stem, a key-ring 5 is provided, said ring having an overturned flange 6, which engages the top of the usual glass 7, under which, and fitting within the lia-nge of the cup, is a key-paper 8, bearing the character so or characters corresponding to the type carried by the key-lever. The key-ring is so bent as to engage the under side of the cup, and is provided with a pair of detent springs 9, having angular portions l0 which engage respectively in recesses shown as a pair Uof detent-receiving slots 1l in the key-stem.
The spring detents 9 are yieldable to permit the angular projections l0 to escape from the slots l1, or to release the detent-engaging means formed by these slots, thereby to enable the key-top as a whole to be detached from the stem 2. It is desirable to provide two slots in the key-stem, because, if the keystem is quite thin, and only one slot were provided the angles ot the spring detents would clash and prevent them from properly holding the key-top in position on the key-stem.
When it is desired to change the key-top, all that is necessary is to apply slight force to the key-top, in order to unseat the detents from the slots, when the whole key-top may be removed and another substituted.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. In a typewriter key, the combination with a key-stem, of a key-cup freely fitting said stem, and a key-ring engaging said cup and detachably secured to said stem.
2. In a typewriter key, the combination with a key-stem, of a key-cup mounted on said stem,fa key-ring, and means for detachably securing said key-cup to the stem through the medium of said ring.
3. In a typewriter-key, the combination with a key-stem having a detent-receiving recess therein, of a detachable key-top comprising a key-cup and a key-ring, and a spring detent carried by said ring for engagement in said recess in the stem and yieldable out of said recess to enable the detachment of the key-top from the stem.
4. In a typewriter key, the combinationr with a key-stem, of a key-top comprising a key-cup and a key-ring, and spring detents carried by said ring for engagement with said stem.
5. In a, typewriter-key, the combination with a key-stem provided with detent-engaging means, of a detachable key-top comprising a key-cupv and a key-ring, and a spring detent carried by said ring for automatic engagement with said means and' automatically yieldable to release said means to enable the detachment of the key-top from the stem.
6. In a typewriter key, the combination with a key-stem, ofakey-eup having a stemreceiving socket mounted O nfsaid keystem,
' a key-paper yand glass in said cup, and a flanged ring engagingsaid eupand clamping- SaiClkey-papier and fglass, Said 'ring be? ing provided with sprngineans engaging said stemand movable to release said ring.
7. In a typewriter key,heV oombination With a key-stem having aslot, of a vkey-cup having a stem-receiving socket mounted on said key-stem, anda larrgedring-fengaging' 'said cup andy having spring 'means' engaging *said slot and movable to release said ring.
8. ln a typewriter-key, the combination With'a-key-Stem having therein apair of detent-'receiving slots, of a detachable key-top comprising a key-cup and a keyjringJ and a p`a1r of spring detents carried by said ring and engageable respectively 'in said slots and yielolable4 therefrom to enable the detach-
