Description

P. C. MORRIS.
COIL BOX PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 6, 19I9.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
PRATT C. MORRIS, OF THOMASVILLE; GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR 'IO CHARLES WHEELER COOPER, OF THOMASVILLE, GEORGIA.
COIL-BOX PROTECTOR.
1,338,581. Original application filed May 16, 19.18,
To all whom it may come m Be it 'known that I, PRATT C. MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'lhomasville, in the county of Thomas and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coil-Box Protectors; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a ppertain's to make and usethesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
. My invention relates to a protector for a coil box, more particularly of automobiles.
It has for its object to provide means for keeping the coil box dry or free from wet or dampness resulting from exposure to weather conditions or washing the vehicle or automobile. The coil box, especially in the Ford type of car, is attached to or supported from the dash-board of the car, which being exposed becomes wet or damp from exposure in wet weather and also in washing the car, and this moisture being communicated to the coils of the box frequently causes a short circuit and for the time being puts the car out of commission. With the view of protecting the coil box and preventing the short circuiting mentioned, the invention consists in the features hereinafter described and then sought to be clearly defined by the claims reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in which-' Figure l is a side view of the forward portion of an automobile of the Ford type, with a portion broken away and showing the dash-board and the protector in vertical section;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the protector or shield;
Fig. 3- a vertical section through the protector on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing an insulating lining, for instance rubber, to the nipples.
In the drawing the numeral 1 designates a portion of an automobile, for instance, the cowl, and 2 the dash-board in a car of the Fordtype. at designates the coil-box cover Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 234,978. 1319." Serial No. 328,676.

or case in which is contained the coil-box from which extend the porcelain covered terminals or binding posts 5 for connection therewith of the conductors 6, all as usual in cars of the type mentioned. The coil box protector or shield is designated by the nu meral 7. Itis made of sheet metal, or other suitable material, and preferably formed with forwardly projecting nipples or tubes 8, corresponding in number to the terminals or binding posts of the coil box, and extending through a corresponding number of openings in the dashboard. The protector lies between the dash-board and the coil box illustrated in Fig. 1 and will be bolted to the dash-board by bolts (not shown) passing through the dash-board and holes 9 made in the protector, or otherwise secured in place, and the terminals or bind ing posts of the coil-box will pass through the nipples 8 of the protector and have the conductors connected thereto as shown in Fig. 1. The upper end 10 of the protector is curved. or deflected backwardly above the top or cover to the coil-box as illustrated in Fig. 1 so that any water-entering through the automobile front portion or between the cowl and dash-board, at the top of the dashboard will be caught by the curved or overhanging top of the protector and directed down the front face of the protector away from the coil-box, thereby protecting the face of the box from water and moisture and preventing short-circuitingand weakening of the spark. The protector formed and applied as described effectively shields the coil box and its terminals from water that may enter about the dashboard and also against the dampness or moisture that might be absorbed by the wooden face of the box, or trickle down the dash-board, and thus the short circuiting heretofore occurring in coil boxes of automobiles is prevented.
If desired, the nipples 8 may be lined with an insulating material such as rubber, which may be soft rubber, and while this might in some cases be desirable it is not absolutely necessary. \Vhilethe nipples tend to protect the terminals, yet the coil box is protected by the shield which directs water away from the face of the box and thus protects the box against absorbing moisture Divided and this application filed October 6,
about the terminals or binding;
and against water that might otherwise triekledown the hue ol' the box and cause short circuiting'.
i This is filed us a division of my application filed Mary H}, 191.8, Serial 23-t,978.'
l have deseribed'lhe preferred construction of the i n'oleelor but changes in details maybe made and essentials of the invention retained.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim is:
l. A protector lor eoildioxes of motor vehicles, comprising! at member adapted to fit between the coil-box and dash-board oi the vehicle and formed with nipples to it in openings in the (llSlhbOillWl and receive the terminals or binding posts of the coil-box and having its upper end extended reztrwerdly to lie above the (oil-box.
2. A proteelor 'l'or coil-boxes of motor vehicles, comprising :1 member having a body portion formed to fit bet ween the coilbox and e dnsh bonrd ol' the vehicle and posts of the at its upper end with over the eoil-box edcoil box and provided a deflector to extend Jueent to the binding-post face of the box.
3. The coin jinnlion with :1 coil-box, cowl, and. (lash-board of :i motionrelnele, of eproteeter applied to the face oi. the coil-box fron'l which its terminals or binding posts project between the be and dashboard and provided with a, deflector extended to lie above and over the coil-box between it and the cowl.
t. The combination with :i coil-box, con l, and dashboard of a motor vehicle of it protector for the box coinpiisin :2 member applied to lie between the o: :erd and coil-box and having it (.lettector disposed to lie over the coil-box between and the cowl at the face of the be); from which its terminals or binding posts project, said protector serving to protect the teri'ninel or binding-- post fare of the box against short ing from ni oistiire.
5. A protector for (oil-botias of motor vehicles, COIIl1')IlSl1l,{ e Hlfillltlfil' having a body portion formed to fit betweei'i the coilbox and a dash-board and provided ttt its upper end with it deflector to extend over the coil-box adjacent to the face of the box from which its terminals or binding posts project' said body portion being provided with projecting terminal-shields having on insuluting lining.
