To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL WILHELM Ar- PELBERG, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Stockholm, Sweden, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Pressing Down the Covers ot' PreservingJ ars of Preserving Apparatus, of which the following is a speciiication.
In the previously known preserving apparatus the devices Afor pressing down the covers of the preserving jars during the boil ing have been executed according to two principles.
@ne principle is characterized by the fact that the springs acting upon the covers of the jars are movable upward or downward in a guide throughout the whole length of the apparatus, the said guide generally consisting of a plurality of slots eX- tending in a pipe along the whole apparatus or a plurality of rods likewise extending throughout the whole apparatus, each for guiding and fixing a spring, the friction caused by the tension of the spring then serving to maintain the spring in the position desired. The other principle is char` acterized by the fact that one or more movable spring holders are mounted on a rod extending throughout the apparatus, the said holders, however, being arranged in such a way that the springs mounted on the same cannot be strained individually, but the spring holder serves to strain the spring or springs mounted on the same by moving the holder upward or downward. Thus, in using jars of di'erent height it will be necessary to apply a plurality of spring holders for avoiding the necessity of using a great number of dierent springs.
rllhe present invention mostly approaches to the last named arrangement because, ac` cerding to the invention, one or more spring holders are mounted on a rod or upright extending through the apparatus. These spring holders and springs, however, essentially dier as to their construction from the ones hitherto in use. The spring ho1ders and springs according to the present invention are executed in such a way that the latter can be moved vertically in relation to the spring holders and can be locked in the same in derent height-positions.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l 1s a view showing in side elevation and partly in section, one form of device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the holder shown in Fig. 1. On the upright extending through the apparatus there is mounted a spring holder consisting of two disks Z) and c iXed each to one end of a pipe ci which is attached to the upright a in the desired position by means of a pin or the like. The said disks of the spring holder are provided with a suitable number of slots e arranged straight above each other. The springs f and g, which most preferably are made of flator round-iron, have, as shown in the drawing, a straight part introduced into both the slots. The straight part of the spring is suitably provided with notches.
The arrangement works in such a way that, after the jar has been placed in the apparatus, the spring is moved down toward the cover. On the depression of the spring for effecting the desired pressure upon the cover the straight part of the spring will turn in the guide, the outer edge or' the spring pressing upon the outer thin edge of the slot in the lower disk, and the inner edge of the spring pressing upon the inner edge of the slot in the upper disk. In consequence or' the notches of the spring, this latter is kept very effectively in the desired position. rlhe spring is released by pressing the same by means of the hand at the lower disk toward the center and by simultaneously pulling the spring upward in the slots.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the class described comprising an upright, a holder fixed to the upright, members slidable vertically on said holder, and coacting means formed on the holder and members for locking the members in vertically adjusted position.
2. A device of the class described co1n prising an upright, 'a holder comprising spaced disks formed with alined slots, resilient members slidable through said slots and adapted to engage the walls of the slots when resting on the top of the jar to lock the members against vertical movement.
3. A device oi the class described comprsng an upright, a holder comprising name to this speeifcaton in the presence of spaced disks formed with alined slots, re-
