Be it known that I, I-Innnnn'r L. BROWN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Petersburg, county of Dinwiddie, and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Capping Machines, of which the following is a full and clear specification.

The object of this invention is to provide an inexpensive, simple and practical hand operated device for capping bottles, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my improved apparatus.

In the drawing, a designates a base-plate which is adapted to be fastened to a table or other support. Anchored in this baseplate is a pair of vertical parallel rods Z), and connecting the upper free ends of these rods is av cross-head 0 which is slidably mounted on the rods, being provided with a pair of eyes (I which fit the rods. The inner face of each rod is provided with a series of notches e, and the crosshead carries on its upper side a pivoted flat bar f whose ends are adapted to enter the notches in the respective rods to thus lock the cross-head in its adjusted position, the series of notches being long enough to accommodate bottles of ordinary height. In the under side of the cross-head is a central recess 9 for receivingv the cap and crimping it on the mouth of the bottle when the bottle is pushed upwardly against the cross-head.

The bottle-rest consists of a disk 71, provided with pairs of lugs i at diametrically opposite points for embracing therods b, to thus guide the bottle-rest in the up-anddown movements. The disk It is provided with an annular upstanding flange 7' to hold the bottle in place, and at the back the flange is provided with an upstanding lug 70, against which the bottom of the bottle strikes when the bottle is placed in position on the rest to'thereby center the bottle on the rest.

Depending'from the disk It is a hub Z, and centrally through this hub extends a rod on which is affixed rigidly to the base a, to thereby serve as an additional guide for the bottle-rest. This depending hub or tube Z is provided with a pair of wings a extending in opposite directions from the hub, the lower ends of these wings being rounded at 0 to receive the forked arms p of a lever 9 carrying a pin r which is pivotally mounted on a lug s rising from the base at a point a short distance in front of the center of the base. The pin, as stated, is carried by the lever, and is journaled in the lug s, so that by depressing the outer end of the lever the bottle-rest will be elevated.

The nature and scope of the invention having been thus indicated and its preferred embodiment having been specifically described, what is claimed as new is:

1. In a bottle-capping machine, a base, a pair of parallel rods rising therefrom,means on the base for raising the bottle, and abutment means carried at the upper ends of the rods embodying a cross-bar slidably mount ed on the rods and having a crimping recess in its under side and having pivoted centrally on its top side alocking bar, said parallel rods being each provided with a series of notches in its inner face adapted to receive the ends of said pivoted. bar.

2. In a bottle-capping machine, a base, upstanding rods on the base, a cross-head carried at the upper ends of the rods, a'bottlesupport slid-ably engaging the rods and provided with a pair of depending wings on its under side, a central guide-post for said bottle-rest, and a lever pivotally mounted on the base and having a forked inner end engaging under the lower edges of said wings.
