will effec-tively cushion the vertical as well as the lateral jars and jolts incidental to transportation, and have its removable parts positively secured without thev use of nails so that the box may be used repeatedly and its period of use materially lengthened.
The especial object of the invention is the provision of a packing box which is simple and practical in construction, strong, durable and eiiicient in use, and yet inexpensive to manufacture.
For a full understanding of the invention, a detailed description of a construction embodying the invention in its preferred form will now be given in connection with the accompanying dra-wings forming a part of this specification and the features forming the invention then specifically pointed out in the claims.

Figure 3 is an enlarged section on line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an isometric View of one of the cushioning elements and Figure 5 is a sectional view of a. detail.
Referring to the drawings, A is a wooden packing box shown for purposes of illustration as arranged to receive twelve `bottles B, which are resiliently supported in any suitable manner, as by excelsior C, which may be of considerable depth as shown.
Above the resilient support C is preferably arranged a lateral thrust member D provided with a circular opening 1 for each of the bottles B, these openings 1 being of the same or approximately of the same size as the bottle so'that the lateral thrust of the bottle is distributed along the periphery of the circle, thus decreasing thev danger of breakage. This lateral thrust member D may be placed at any height on the bottles,

but may, with advantage, rest upon the re# silient support C, so as to further decrease the danger of breakage by engaging the bottles Bf at or near their bottoms where the glass is thicker and stronger than on its sides. f I
The thrusts at the upper ends of the bottles B are Vabsorbed by a thrust member E" having circular holes 2, one for each lbottle B and of sufficient size to allow the passage of the bottle necks and permitthe thrust member E to rest upon the shoulders of the bottles, in which position it is preferably secured in ordery to hold the bottles B downy to prevent their coniingfout of the openings 1 in the lateral thrust member D and to absorb the verticalthrust of the bottles should the packing box A be accidentally turned upside down. The thrust member E may be vheld in place in any suitable manner, but is preferably secured by one or more cleats F which extend across the member E with their opposite ends engaging suitable slots 3 cut` in the sides of the box'A. The cleats F may be swiveled or pivotally secured to the thrust member E as by swivels 4. f
The top of the boxis closed by a cover 5 detachably` secured to the box without the use of nails. For this purpose each'end of the box has'secured thereto one or more suitably spaced spring rods 7 carryingdetents 8 which pass through openings 9 in the box ends and engage holes 10 in a cross piece or cleat 11 secured to the box cover 5 adjacent its end. Upon opening the box, it is only fr necessary to move the detents 8 outward against the action of the spring rods 7 and hold them in removed position by the 1nsertion of a block or wedge 12 asshown in f.

It will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the especial construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, as these may be variedwithin the invention as defined by the claims. f
I claim:
l. In a packing boX for bottles, in combination, a resilient support for the bottles, a rigid lateral thrust member having a circular opening, the wall of said opening neatly fitting the bottle periphery and engaging the bottle at its bottom whereby the lateral thrusts thereon are distributed throughout the periphery of the bottle and at the point where the glass is thicker and stronger, a vertical thrust member having a circular opening, the rigid wall of which surrounds the bottle neck without contact therewith and has its lower edge entirely in enga-gement with the shoulder of the bottle, a cover on the box, and means for securing the vertical thrust member in position with the resilient support under compression and the bottle stopper out of Contact with the box cover.

In a packing box for bottles, yin combination, a resilient support Jfor the bottles7 a rigid lateral thrust member having a circular opening, the wall of said opening neatly fitting the bottle periphery and engaging the bottle at its bottom whereby the lateral thrusts thereon are distributedY throughout the periphery of the bottle and at the pointY where the glass is thicker and stronger, a vertical thrust member having a circular opening, the rigid wall of which surrounds the bottle neck without contact therewith and has its lower edge entirely in engagement with the shoulder of the bottle, a cover on the box, means for securing the vertical thrust member in position with the resilient support under compression and the bottle stopper out of contact with the box cover, and means for detachably securing the covei' on the boX without the use of nails.
