'lOOI: FOR DLING- DRILL-BITS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. '7, 1919.
Substitute for application Serial No. 168,605, filed May 14, 1917. This application filed December 28, 1918. Serial No. 268,755.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 'it known that I, ARTHUR Bnnnn'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and e N 0. 561,305, and is a substitution for my prior application Serial No.168,605, filed May 14, 1917. I y
The, improvement consists in providing the rotatable supporting and turning or wrench member of the tool with reinforcing and retaining abutments at the entering corners of the open shank-engaging socket whereby to obviate or reduce the tendency to abrasive wear of these portions by the additional width of the metal across the corner facesof the supporting member. Also, to provide, by the rear faces of the reinforcing abutments,- limiting stops for the bit to prevent its outward movement.
In the drawings, showing one preferred embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the tool;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line II, II of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the toolengaging socketed plates detached Fig. A is a front edge view of said plate in elevation;
Fig. 5 is a front view of the tool with a bit rotatably supported therein.
The rotatable bit-engaging member of the tool is composed of an open ended plate or ring 2 having a central clearance cavity generally corresponding to the cross section of the shank of the bit to be supported, with ample clearance. This ring is provided with an annular partly cylindrical portion 31nwardly of a retaining flange 4 at one side, as shown in Fig. 2. Secured to ring 2 by bolts 5 or otherwise is a supplemental openended plate or ring 6 which extends outwardly beyond the annular face 3 of ring and thereby provides, with flange 4:, hold- 111g engagement with the intervening open supporting ring 7. Said ring is pivotally mounted by trunnion supports or bolts 8 in the ends 9 of a fork 10 of the main carrying frame, having the handle 11 and an eye 12 for a crane hook or the like.
Ring 6 is provided, as shown, with inner opposite parallel sides 13 adaptedto engage the opposite parallel sides of the squared shank of a drill bit 1 1 which rests by its shouldered portion 15 upon the upper edges of sides 13 of upper plate 6. The inner edges 13 of plate 6 extend slightly inwardly above the inner edges of lower plate 2, so that the shank and shouldered portion of the bit 14 are engaged and supported by the upper plate 6 only. f
For thepurpose of facilitating the application of the tool to the bit, or viceversa, the front corners of plate rings 6 and 2 and carrying ring7 at each side of the middle opening are beveled, as at 16, so that in using the device, if the bit and tool are not in direct alinement, as is usual, the beveled edge at either side will tend to guide the parts to central position. This action is apt to cause hammering, abrasion and wearing away of the corner portions at each side due to such frequent contact, and I have provided a reinforcing abutment 17 at each inner corner, as shown, to compensate therefor. This abutment extends along the bevel faces 16 and rearwardly along the sides 13 and also upwardly above the top face of ring 6 sufliciently far to provide by its rear trans verse edge substantial bearing lugs for the shouldered portion 15 of the bit at each side. In this manner, the bit is easily inserted and securely held in centralized position when suspended, and is prevented from moving forwardly out of the open end of the supporting ring until the same is lowered or the bit is raised. The device in this respect, by providing the lugs 17 'at the corners of the top open ring 6, prevents lateral movement of the bit and greatly strengthens the ring at its points of greatest wear.
The terminals of the carrying ring? which are similarly beveled, lie substantially flush with the beveled ends 16, providing smooth entrance faces for the bit when out of alinement at either side. It will be understood that the bit is to be turned to screw or unscrew it to or from the drilling tool, either by a separately applied wrench or by providing the rotatable open rings wit-hone or more handles 18, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2.
It will be understood that the upper open ring 6 may be of difierent sizes for different sized bits, so that one may besubstituted for the other by removing bolts 5, each ring having the reinforcing abutments 17.
What I claim is:
1. In a tool for handling drill hits, the) combination with a bifurcated lever having a pii ota-lly supported open-ended ring; of a two-part open center bit-supporting member having as one part a removable upper plate provided with beveled end faces leading outwardly in divergently opposite directions from inner parallel side edges, and reinforcing corner abntnients extending upwardly above the face of the upper plate providing extensions of the inner side and bevel faces and having rear shouldered por: tions for resisting movement of a supported bit, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a forked lever having a pivoted supporting ring having a middle opening between beveled terminals, a bit holder consisting of an open-ended base having an inner clearance space between parallel inner edges, and a removable upper plate secured thereto to provide a retaining annular trackway for the bit holder on the supporting ring provided with an inner bit-receiving space between opposite par-.
allel inner side edges, said edges terminating in outwardly flaring or beveled face terminals and having upwardly extending abut ments forming continuations of said par allel side edges and beveled faces and having rear bit-engaging shoulders, substantially as set forth.
3. A removable plate for a bit supporting tool having inner parallel side edges and oppositely flaring beveled faces at each side of an open bit-receiving space leading into the middle of the ring and provided with upwardly extending reinforcing abutments extending for a distance along the inner side edges and beveled faces and forming continuations thereof and having rear shouldered bit-engaging portions, substantially as set forth.
I. An oil well swivel Wrench including a swivel ring having an open side, a jaw rotatably in ented upon the swivel ring and having an opening extending through one side of the jaw and adapted to be brought into, and out of registry with the open side of the ring, and a pair of stop lugs project-v ing upwardly from the jaw on opposite sides of the mouth of the opening to prevent the accidental disengagement of a tool from the j w ope ng- 5. An oil well swivel wrench including a swivel ring having an opening in one side thereof, a jaw rotatably mounted upon the ring and provided with an opening extending through a side thereof and adapted to be rotated into and out of registry with the opening of the ring, and a pair of stop lugs projecting upwardly from the jaw on opposite sides of the mouth of the opening thereof, the outer sides of the lugs being beveled while the inner sides thereof terminate in square sh0ulders, said lugs serving to prevent the accidental disengagement of a tool from the jaw.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature.
ARTHUR BARRETT.
