Description

G. A. YOUNG.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 2?. I921.
Patented Mar. 28, 1922 1 RIVERS? ATTORN EY WITNESS:
rrso STATES PATENT QFFICE.
GEQRGE A. YOUNG, OF NERV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO LOUIS SCHMEHL, OF UNION HILL, NEW JERSEY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches.
More particularly the invention relates to spanners or quick adjustable wrenches deigned to operate on pipes orthe like as well as nuts and the like.
Some of the objects of the present invention are: to produce a comparatively practical wrench of the character set forth; to provide securing means for pivotally con necting the component parts of which the wrench is essentially constituted, which in? cludes a quick detachable pivot pin so that the wrench may be adjusted to be usable on comparatively large and small nuts, pipes and the like; to produce a wrench of the character mentioned which is self-gripping after the fashion of a Stillson wrench. With. these and other objects in view the invention resides in the particular provision and construction of parts hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view similar to thatshown in Figure 1 but showing the jaws of the wrench in another relation.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33, Figure 1. a
Figure a is a sectional elevation of the wrench.
Referring more particularly to the several views of the drawing for the details of construction and operation of the provided parts, it will be manifest that, it includes parts 10 and 11 which are the main parts. The part 10 comprises a shank or handle 12 which has a jaw 13 the same being serrated as at 1 1; a series of holes 15 in the handle;
and a screw driver end 16 embodied by the said handle. The part 11 comprises a shank or handle 17 which has a jaw 18, the same 7 Specification of Letters Patent. Pg i b d pl 28 1922 Application filed May 27,
1921. Serial No. 472,972.
back 23 the upper end of which acts to limit the relative movement of the part 11 with respect to the part 10 when the parts 10 and 11 are plvoted together and that is accom-- part 11 and either of the series of holes in the shank or handle 12 of the part 10. After the pin 26 has been so extended the hook 25 of the latch 24 is dropped into the kerf 28 in said pin to hold the pin in place against movement. As shown in the drawing the the series of holes 15 and that allows the jaws 13 and 18 to be moved relatively within certain limits to accommodate comparativel small pipes or nuts. It is of course manifest that under such disposition of the pin 26 though comparatively small things may be accommodated even though the jaws 13 and 18 are separated to the full, things of different sizes or dimensions may be operated on for the turning thereof and without the necessity of holding both handles 12 and 17, the jaw being self-gripping. When it is desired to accommodate larger nuts or pipes it is necessary only to lift the latch 24:; remove the pin 26; replace the pin so that the same will extend through another and lower hole of the series of holes 15; and drop the latch so that the hook 25 thereof will .be disposed in the kerf 28 of the pin 26.
From the foregoing it should be manifest that, the parts 10 and 11 may be readily and effectively adjusted to be usable on various sized and divers things; the part 11 may be separated from the part 10 so that the part 10 may be used interchangeably with other parts 11 having jaws of different designs when such other parts 11 are furnished with the part 10.
What is claimed is: Y
1. A wrench including relatively movable main parts having coacting serrated jaws, and securing means for effecting the pivotal connection of said main parts, said securing means including a pin having a head on one end'and a kerf in the opposite end, and a latch having a hook engageable in the kerf.
pin 26 is extended through the top hole of 2. A Wrench including interfitting main through either of the series of holes and parts,; each of said parts having a self-rated through the said alined holes to efiect allivet l0 jaw, one of said parts having a series of: for thernain parts; the latch being engege- 7 holes therein, the other of said parts having able in said. kerf for securing the pin in a alinecl holes therein, a latch pivotallyhse place.
