DOUBLE-ACTING TONG.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEDDY D. NIxoN, a citizen of the Unlted States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in a Double-Acting Tong, of which thefollowingis' a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a double acting tong.
One object of the invention is to provide a tong of the character described specially designed for screwing joints of pipe and for turning other round objects.
.Another object of the invention is to provide a tong of the characterdescribed which is so constructed that it will readily grip the pipe, or other object to turn it in either direction.
A further feature of the invention resides in the provision of a novel means for suspending the tong in its proper relation to the work.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, oper- V ation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the tong.

Figure 5 shows a plan view of the tong and the suspending means therefor, and
Figure 6 shows a side' view thereof.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the tong handle, one end of which is enlarged forming the head 2, said head consisting of the upper andlower plates 3, 3, which are spaced apart, and. formed integrally with the handle. The numerals 4t, 4 designate the jaws r which are arcuate in general contour, andwhich are formed with the flattened shanks, 5, 5, which fit between the plates 3. The inner end of each shank has an opening 6 therethrough, aligned with corresponding openings 7, 7 through the upper and lower lates and in front of the 0 enin s 6 each shank has an oblong slot 8, 8 aligned with the corresponding opening 6, said slots lying in substantially parallel relation with the longitudinal axis of the handle. The plates 3 and unscrewing Pins 10, 10 are provided. One of these pins 7 is fitted through the aligned openings '7 of the plates 3 and through the correspondingopen ing 6, of one of the jaws 4t and the other pin works through the aligned openings 9 of the plates and through the slot 8 of the other jaw 4. The position of these pins are. reversed when it is desired to reverse the action of the tong, that-is when it is desired to manipulate the tong in the other direction. I
Hinged to the free end oi one of'the jaws 4 there is a latch 11 whose free end has the opposing lateral lugs 12, 12, and the free. end of the other'jaw 4: hasa notch 13 into which the latch engages to hold said jaws in closed position around the pipe. Underneath the fitted a coil spring 15, which presses against the shoulder 16 of the latch to hold it against accidental disengagement from the other jaw. The inner side of each jaw has suitable teeth for engagement with the pipe to be turned. These teeth 17 may be made detachable, if desired, and any number of teeth may be employed.
' In Figure 1 the wrench is shown in position, as engaged around the pipe and the pins 10 are disposed to cause the jaws to grip the pipe, when the tong is turned in a left hand, or anti-clock wise direction. In this position the shanks of the jaws are spaced apart. When power is applied to the handle it will assume the position shown in Figure 3, and one of the pins 10 traveling the slot 8 will describe an arc and force the jaws together to grip the pipe. If the tong is to be manipulated in the other direction the position of the pins 10 should bereversed.
In Figures 5 and 6 l have shown means forsuspending the tong in position to he applied to the pipe. 7 These suspending means are necessary for the reason that the tong is usually too heavy to be easily handled. Each side of the upper plate 3 has an car 18 in which there is threaded a hook l9 and near the outer end oi the handle there is a similar hook 20. The tong is suspended from the derrick, by means of a cable. 21, whose lower end has a ring 22. A chain 23 is connected at one end to said ring and at the other end to the hook 20. Chains 24, 24: are connected at their lower ends to the'hooks 19 and their upperends are con- 1 neoteld to the ring 25, and the- rings 22 and 25 are connected by a chain 26. \Vhat I claim 1s:
1. A tong including a handle, spaced headplates carried by one end of the'h'andle, and
