UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR C. JEWETT, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS C0,, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
SHOT-SHELL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 1919.
Application filed November 29, 1918. Serial No. 264,489.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR C. Juwu'rr, a citizen of the United States, resldlng at New Haven, in the county of New Haven form which my improved shell may assume.
My invention relates to an improvement in shot shells designed with particular reference to being used in trap-shooting but not limited to such use, the object being to mark, for the guidance of the shooter, the' path of the charge of shot.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a shot shell having one or more ignitible flight-marking pellets embedded in its charge of shot and adapted to be ignited when the shell is exploded by the concussion of the shot-charge against them and to accompany the charge of shot to mark the path thereof and to render the same visible to. the eyeof the shooter.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I embed three ignitible flight-marking pellets .,2.in the charge of shot 3 which is interposed between the overshot cardboard wad 4, and the foremost driving-wad 5 of the three felt driving-wads 5, 6 and 7 which are in front of the cardboard wad 8;
otherwise the shell is of standard construction. When the shell is exploded,the pellets are ignited'and accompany the charge of shot during its travel the path of which they mark so. as to render the same visible to.the eye of the shooter. As for the pellets 2 they must have suflicient weight to accompany the charge of shot the ath of which they mark. Their element oi ignitible materm] may be of any suitable composition, such as magnesium and barium peroxid.
It will be understood, of course, that when the contents of the shell are discharged all of the wads shortly fall to the ground.
I claim In a flight-marking shot shell, the combination with the paper tube, powder-charge,
wads and shot-charge thereof, of one or more ignitible flight-marking pellets embedded in the shot-charge, adapted to be ignited by the concussion of the same when the shell is exploded, and having sufficient 'carry to follow the same so as to render-the flight of the same visible to the eye of the p shooter.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib ing witnesses.
