snow-SHELL.
To all whom z't may concern:
- citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, inthe county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shot-Shells; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said' drawings constitute part of this application,
' and represent, in I Figure 1 a view in longitudinal central section of a flight-marking shot-shell embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 an enlarged sectional view of the fliglalt-marking pellet or body.
3' in shot shells designed with particular reference to being used in trap-shooting but not limited to such use, the ob ect being to mark the path of the charge of shot for the guidance of the shooter.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a shot shellcharacterized by having installed within it a flight-marking pellet or body consisting of a metal core surrounded by an ignitible composition and adapted in weight to accompany the charge of 'shot and mark the path thereof.
My invention further consists in the construction hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a flight-marking pellet or body consisting of ametal ball 2 embedded in a spherical envelop of suitable. ignitible composition 3, such, for instance, as magnesium and barium peroxid. The metal core 2 may assume any convenient form, its function being to lend suflicient weight to the pellet to insure its accompanying the char of shot and so indicate the path thereof. 7 s shown, the pellet is installed within an open- Specification of Letters Patent.
-communicated invention relates to an improvement Patented May 27, 1919.
Application filed November 29, 1918. Serial No. 264,486.
ing 4 in the center of the rearmost wad 5 of the felt-driving wads 5, 6 and 7 Fire is. rom the powder-charge 8 to the pellet through a central perforation 9 in the undershot cardboard wad 10. The
charge of shot 11 is confined between the foremost driving-wad 7 and the over-shot cardboard wad 12 which is held in place by forming a crimp 13 in the outer end of the tube or case 14. The shell also comprises a base wad 15, a metal head 16 and a primer 17. When the powder-charge 8 is exploded by the primer 17, a tongue of flame passes through the opening 9 in the wad 10 and ignites the composition 3 of the flight-markingpellet which as the wads drop away, accompanies the charge of shot, and continuing to burn, marks their flight, whereby the user of the arm is able to follow the course of the shot.
I claim A shot shell having a paper body, a shot charge and a powder charge located therein, a group of (lI'lVlIl wads inter osed between the said powder 0 arge and s ot charge, an
under shot wad interposed between the powder charge and the real-most of the. said driving wads and formed with a flame-transmitting opening, and 'a flight-marking pellet consisting of a. core embedded in an envelop of ignitible material, installled in the rearmost of the said driving wads in position to have flame communicated to it from the powder charge through the under shot wad, the said pellet being separable from the wads and of suflicient carry to follow the charge of shot.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
