I nited by UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR 0. JEWETT, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS 00., OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT,. ACORPORATION.
SHOT-SHELL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 1919.
Application filed November 29, 1918. Serial No. 264,488.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR C. Jnwn'rr, a. citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shot-Shells, and do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represents a sectional view in longitudinal central'section of one form which my improved shell may assume.
My invention relates to an improvement in shot shells designed with particular reference to being used in trap-shooting but not limited to such use, the object being to mark, for the guidance of the shooter, the path of the charge of shot.
With these ends in View, myinvention consists in a shot shell having one or more ignitible flight-marking bodies or pellegs embedded in its powder-charge so as to e igthe explosion thereof and adapted in weight to accompany the charge of shot so as to mark the path thereof.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I embed three ignitible flight-marking bodies or pellets 2 composed of a mixture of magnesium and barium peroxid or other suitable material directly in the powder-charge 3 of a shot-shell which in other respects may be of any standard construction and which, as shown, comprises a cardboard undershot wad 4, felt-driving wads 5, 6 and 7, a charge of shot 8, a cardboard overshot wad 9, a tube or case 10, a base-wad 11, a cup-like head 12, and a primer 13.
\Vhen the powder charge is exploded the pellets 2 are ignited and accompany the (barge of shot during its course, which they indicate, so that the shooter may mark the same and be governed accordingly. The pellets 2 may vary in number and disposition and will be adapted in weight to accompany the charge of shot.
I claim A flight marking shot shell having an ignitible flight-marking body or pellet embedded in its powder-charge for ignition thereby, and adapted to accompany the charge of shot and to render the path thereof visible to the shooter.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
