configuration and proportions as to provideA a clearance space 6a for the bolt head.
The bearing member 5 is formed with an enlarged outer end or head portion `9 having an angular recess 10 to receive a wrench and the peripheral portion of the part 9 is rounded, as at 11 so that the bearing member may havea universally movable or adjustable :mounting onthe seat 4 in the opening in thewouter boiler sheet, whereby said bearing may be so adjusted as toinsure proper aline` mentor the staybolt with its points of connection with 4the respective boiler sheets. When properly adjusted or' positioned, the bearingmember will be welded to the outer boiler sheetby a weld 12, the latter occupying a groove formed bythe beveled portion` 4a of the Wall ofthe `opening in the boiler With 'this Aandfothe'r objects inl` view, the

Ifldesirech "the bearing device1 may be Vv In Fig. 2,the opening in the boiler sheet" has aV threaded wall 15 Vto be engagedby they threadedr portionlt of the rbearing member. `Thus the device is adapted for use in an mounted' as shown in Fig.` 3, wherein said A "devcehas a universally movable or adjustanda beveled able mounting at its rounded inner end portion 8n in the opening in the boiler sheet, the wall of said opening being made with a rounded seat 18 to receive said rounded portion 8a. The bearing member will be united to the boiler sheet by a weld 19 surrounding a part of the threaded portion 14 of the device.
It will be observed that my improved bearing device also constitutes a closure over the bolt head and for the opening in the boiler sheet. v
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, 1a represents an outer boiler sheet and 2a the inner sheet of a boiler. In Fig. 4, the outer boiler sheet is shown provided with an opening 3, a portion of the wall of which is rounded to form a seat 4b and another portion of said wall may be beveled, as at 4b.
The bearing member 5a may be constructed in a single piece open at both ends-its inner end portion being rounded eXteriorly as at 61 to be mounted on the rounded wall of the opening in the boiler sheet as hereinafter explained.
The rounded inner end portion 6b of the bearing member provides an interior rounded seat 7a for the head 8b of a staybolt 9,- the inner end of the latter being secured to the inner boiler sheet in any suitable manner.
The bearing member 5a is enlarged to form an annular head 10a having a rounded peripheral face 11a to have a universally movable or adjustable mounting upon the seat 4d in the boiler sheet, whereby the bearing member may be so adjusted as to insure proper alinement of the staybolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets. lVhen properly adjusted, the bearing member will be welded to the boiler sheet by a Weld 12a, the latter occupying a groove formed by the beveled portion 4b of the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet portionv 13a of the annular head-10a. v
The interior of the annular head 1()El of the bearing member 5a is threaded and receives an eXteriorly threaded removable plug closure 14a, the latterl lying'lush with the outer end of the head of the bearing member and with the outer lface of the outer boiler sheet, and said plug closure may be made with an angular recess 15'l to receive a Wrench.V
The bearing member is made intermediate of its ends, with an externally threaded portion 16a so that said bearing member may be mounted in an opening 17a in the boiler sheet, having a threaded wall, as shown in 'Fig 5, in which case, the annular head of said bearing member may overlie the boiler sheet and be Welded to the latter, as shown at 18a,
In Fig. 6, the liimer rounded end portion of the bearing member is shown as having a universally adjustable mounting in the opening in the boiler sheet, and the threaded portion lft of said bearing member welded to the outer boiler sheet, as at 19.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 7, 11 represents an inner boiler sheet with which the inner end of a staybolt 2 is connected in any suitable manner and said staybolt is provided at its outer end with a rounded head 3l and this head is connected with the outer boiler sheet 4C by means of devices which will be hereinafter described.
The outer boiler sheet 4 is provided with an opening 5b, a portion of the wall ot which is threaded as at GC. A hollow bearing and closure member 7" enters the opening in the boiler sheet and is made with an exterior threaded portion 8c to mesh with with the threads 6. in the wall of said opening. The inner end portion 9" ot the member 7" is rounded and in order that this rounded end portion may be made to inclose the head 3* of the staybolt and afford a bearing 11b for said head, the blank from which said member 7b is made may be slotted as at 10b and said inner end of the member 7b pressed into the position shown in the drawinO' by forging.
It will be observed that the interior contour and dimensions of the member 7b are such as to provide a clearance space 12b for the head oi' the staybolt.
The member 7b is provided with an angular head 13b to receive a wrench and it is also provided with an annular flange 14b which overlies the outer face of the boiler sheet and between said annular flange and the boiler sheet a gasket 15b is located,- said gasket being preferably disposed in an annular groove or recess in the outer face of the boiler sheet around the opening in the latter.
The inner end portion of the opening in the boiler sheet may be rounded and has such dimensions as to afford a clearance space 1,6b between the rounded inner end portion of the member 7b and the adj aeent Wall of the opening 5b.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure b v Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, a bearing member having an internal seat for the head of a staybolt, said bearing member having an annular unthreaded outer end portion and having its inner end portion rounded lengthwise of the member, said bearing member also having an exterior threaded portion between said annular unthreaded outer end portion and the said rounded portion.
2. A bearing device for the head of a staybolt, having an interior seat for the head 'lio of a staybolt, an exteriorrounded inner end portion, said bearing device provided with an exteriorly rounded outer end portion and an exterior threaded portion between said outer and inner end rounded-portions.
3..'I`he combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a hollow bearing member, one end of which is closed and a staybolt provided with a head having a seat in said bearing member, said bearing member having a `rounded. exterior inner end portion and provided with an unthreaded outer end part having a rounded portion to engage the boiler sheet, and said bearing member also having an exterior threaded portion between its outer and inner end rounded portions, and a weld securing said bearing member to the boiler sheet.
4:., In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a bearing member` having a part at its outer end to provide a seat for said bearing member on the boiler sheet, vsaid bearing member having an exteriorly rounded innerend portion and an exteriorly threaded portion be-` tween the outer end portion and theroundedinner VVend portion, and a stavbolt having a head mounted in said bearing member.
p `5. The combinationV ofl a hollow bearing" member` and a staybolt having a head per manentlyinelosed in said bearing member, said vbearing member having suoli internal configuration as to afford clearance space for the bolt head, and said bearing member having integral rounded portions near re spective ends to be mounted in a boiler sheet and also having an intermediate threaded portion to engage the threaded wall of an opening in a boiler sheet.
6. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a bearing member to enter said opening and provide a closure, said bearing member being hollow, a staybolt having a head permanently inolosed in said bearing member and having such configuration relatively to that l of the interior of the bearing member that a clearance space will be provided in the latter forthe bolt head, said bearing member having an eXteriorly rounded inner end portion and an enlarged or headed outer end portion having a rounded peripheral portion, and said bearing member having a threaded portion between said rounded p0rtions, and a weld uniting said bearing member to the boiler sheet.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this speeieation.
