STAYBOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters .Patent. Patented Sept, 13, 1921.
Application fired January. as, 1920. Serial No. 352,694.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, 'ETHAN I. Dorms, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; and 1 do hereby declare the followingto be a fulhclear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers, one object of the invention being; to provide a bearing member for the head of a staybolt which may be mounted in the boiler sheet sothat its outer end will be flush with the latter and so that said bearing member may be ad justed before being fixed to the boiler sheet,
or to mount said bearing member so that it shall be universally adjustable and project beyond the outer face of the boiler street With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view partly in elevation showing an embodimentiof my invention with the outer end of the device flush with the outer face of the outer boilersheet; and Figs. 2 to 6 are views illustrating modifications.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 the inner sheet, with which latter the inner end of a staybolt 3 is connected in'any suitable manner and the outer headed end 4 of the staybolt is connected with the outer boiler sheet as hereinafter described.
In Fig. 1 the outer boiler sheet is shown as provided-with an opening 5, a portion of flange 10,- between theiunder face of which and the shoulder? formedby the recess 6, a ring 11, preferably of. metal is disposed.
This ring is of such internal" diameter as to neatly fit around the bearing member under theflange 10 and is appreciably less in externaldiameter than is the diameter of that portion of the opening in the boiler sheet formed by the recess 6 so that the bearing member may have more or lesslateral adj ustment.
The bearing member 9 is provided in terlorly w1th a rounded seat 12 on which the head 4: of the staybolt is mounted and the outer end portion of the bearing member is threaded interiorly toreceivea closure 13 which is so formed as toprovide a clearance space 14 for the bolthead. It will berobserved that the outer end of the bearing member 9 andthe outer end of the closure 13 are substantially flushwith each other and with the outer face of the boiler sheet '1.
The space between the peripheral portion of the flange 10 and the beveled or flaring portion 8 of the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet is occupied by a weld 15 which may cohere, not only with the bearing member and boiler sheet but also with the ring 11 and thus the bearing member will be fixedly united to the boiler sheet 1.
In the embodiment or the inventionshown in Fig. 2, l represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 the inner sheet of a boiler. A staybolt 3 is secured in any suitable manner to the inner sheet 2 and is provided at its outer end with a head 45* which is connected with the outer sheet as hereinafterdescribcd.
A bearing member 5 is provided to receive the head atthe outer end of the staybolt and through the medium of which the staybolt is connected with the boiler sheet.
The bearing member 5? is madehollow to receive the head of the bolt and after said head shall have been inserted into the member 5 the inner end portion of the latter will be forged so as to inclose the head of the. bolt, at the same time providing an interior curved seat 6 for the head of the bolt and also anexternal curved portion 7*; The
boltand bearing member maybe assembled as above described at the shop. The interior of theimember 5 has suchconfiguration and proportions as to provide a clearance space 8 for the bolt, headand the closed end 9 of said member 5 constitutes a'closure over the bolt head. The outer closed end of the member may be made with an angular recess for the reception of a wrench.
The bearing member 5 is provided extering is'made with a countersunk seat 14" for the annular flange or shoulder of the bearing member 5. The bearing ring 13 is made boiler sheets.
rounded'exteriorly as at 15 tohave universally movable mounting on a rounded seat 16 formed by a portion of the wall of an opening 17 in the outer boiler sheet, so that the bearing member may be so adjusted as to insure proper alinement of the staybolt with its points of connection with the respective The bearing ring 13 is beveled at its upper end, as at 18, and this beveled portion forms, with a portion of the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet, a groove in which a weld 19 is located,-said weld fixedly uniting the bearing ring to the boiler sheet when the parts shall have been properly adjusted. I
' With the parts assembled as above described the bolt may be tested by attempt tion toproduce a pull on the bolt.
ing to turn the bearing member in a direc- Should the bolt be broken, the bearing member can be turned.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 6, 1 represents an outer boiler sheet having an opening 2', the wall of V which may be straight and cylindrical. The
inner boiler sheet is indicated at 3 and with said sheet 3", the inner end of a staybolt 4 is connected in any suitable manner, the outer end of said stayboltbeing provided with a rounded head 5 which is connected with the outer boiler sheet 1 by means of devices hereinafter described.
6' represents a bearing member, the major portion of which is partly spherical and hollow while the outer end portion is en larged as at 7 and provided with an annular flange 8 The blank from which the member 6 is made is slotted or slit as indicated by dotted line 9 and after the head of the bolt shall be inserted into said member,
the inner portion of the latter will be pressed by a forging operation so as to inclose the 'bolt head and provide a seat 10 for the latter. configuration and proportions as to provide The interior of the member 6 has such a clearance space 11 for the bolt head, and the larger end 7" of said member is provided with an opening which communicates with fthe space 11 whereby access may be had to I the head of the staybolt for testing the latter. The wall "of the opening in' the en- 'of the bearing member 6 rests.
ber 6 is threaded and receives .a threaded plug 12 which normally closes said opening. This plug maybe made with an angular recess 18 to receive a wrench.
A ring 14 is mounted on the outer face of the boiler sheet 1 surrounding the'opening 2 and overlies said opening- Thisring affords a seat on which the annular flange 8 The internal diameter of the ring 14 is slightly greater than the external diameter of that portion of the bearing member whichit surrounds, thus leaving a clearance space 15*.
A weld 16 surrounds the ring 14 and also the flange 8 of the bearing member and unites said ring and bearing member to the outer face of the boiler sheet.
It will be observed that the opening 2" in the boiler sheet is straight and that the bearing member is connected with the outer face of the boiler sheet and thus necessity for threading or reaming the boiler sheet to accommodate the bearing members is obviated.
By reason of the rounded contour of'the body portion of the bearing member, the latter may be mounted on a seat in the boiler sheet so as to be universally movable or adjustable if desired. i
Instead of making the under face of the flange 8 of the bearing member fiat, said flange may be rounded as indicated at 1'7 Fig. 4 and the ring 14? may be made with a rounded seat 18 to receive the rounded portion 17 of the flange.
The bearing member 6 as shown in both Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing is capable of limited movement on the ring 14 for adj usting said bearing member before the parts shall have been welded to the boiler sheet.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 1represents an inner boiler sheet with which the inner end of a staybolt 2 is connected in any suitable manner and the outer end of. the staybolt is provided with a rounded head 3 'which is connected with the outer boiler sheet 4 as hereinafter described. I
The boiler sheet 4 is provided with an.
opening, a portion of the wall of which may be rounded to provide a seat 5 and the outer portion of said opening may be enlarged to form an annular recess 6 adjacent to the outer face of the boiler sheet.
A ring 7 is located on the outer face of the boiler sheet 4 and has an interior threaded portion 8 which overlies the annular. recess 6 in the boiler sheet. This ring is fixedly unitedto the boiler sheet 4 by means of a Weld 9,the alloy, composing this weld surrounding said, ring and ex tending tothe outer face of the boiler sheet l0 enters the opening in the boiler sheet and that portion of said member which passes through the boiler sheet is rounded so as to conform to the seat 5 in the boiler sheet and so as to permanently inclose the bolt head 3 and provide a seat 11 for said bolt head. The interior contour of the member 10 is such as to provide a clearance space 12 for the head of the staybolt.
The member 10 is made with an external threaded portion 13 which screws through the threaded ring 7 and with a peripheral flange 14 which overlies said ring,--a gasket 15 being interposed between said peripheral. flange and said ring. The member 10 is also provided with an angular head 16 to receive a wrench.-
lVith the use of the structure an eflicient mounting is provided for the head of the staybolt and a convenient connection is afforded for the staybolt to the boiler sheet which will permit the testing of the staybolt by turning the member 10 without the necessity of a threaded connection between said member and the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet, said threaded connection between the member 10 and the boiler sheet being efi'ected through the medium of the ring 7 welded to the outer face of said boiler sheet.
When my improvements are applied to a curved or rounded boiler sheet 4:, the ring 7 will hear at two diametrically opposite points only against the outer face of such boiler sheet, but the weld 9 will effectually unite those portions of the ring which do not contact with the face of the boiler sheet as well as those parts which do, to the boiler sheet.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-P'atent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, and a staybolt having a head, of a bearing member having an exteriorly rounded inner end portion and a lateral flange at its outer end, said bearing member disposed coincident with the opening in the boiler sheet and having therein a seat for the head of the staybolt, a part at the outer end oi the bearing member closing the latter over the head of the staybolt, a ring between said lateral flange and the boiler. sheet, and means for securing said ring to the boiler sheet.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, and
a staybolt having a head, of a bearing member having an externally rounded inner end.
portion and having therein a seat for the head of the staybolt, said bearing member having a flange at its outer end, and a ring disposed between said flange and the boiler sheet and welded to the latter.
3. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening and a staybolt having a head, of a bearing member having therein a seat for the head of the staybolt, said bearing member having a flange at its outer end, and a ring disposed between said flange and the boiler sheet and secured to both.
4. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening and a staybolt having a head, of abearing member having therein a seat for the head of the staybolt, said bearing member having a flange at its outer end, and a ring encircling the bearing member under said flange and welded to the latter and to the boiler sheet.
5. In a staybolt structure, the combination with an outer boiler sheet having an opening, a portion of the wall of which is recessed forming a shoulder, of a bearing member passing through said opening and having a lateral flange near its outer end, a ring disposed between said lateral flange and the shoulder in the boiler sheet, said bearing member having an internal seat, a staybolt having a head mounted on said sheet, and a weld between the peripheral portion of the flange of the bearing member and a portion of the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet.
6. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, a
portion of the wall of which is recessed forming a shoulder, of a bearing member passing through said opening and having an external diameter appreciably less than the diameter of said opening, said bearing member having a lateral flange near its outer end, a ring encircling the bearing member under said flange and resting on the shoulder in the boiler sheet, said ring having an external diameter appreciably less than the diameter of the recessed portion of the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet, a weld uniting the flange on the bearing member with the boiler sheet, said weld disposed over a portion of said ring, and a closure entering said bearing member.
