Description

J. R. FLANNERY.
STAYBOLT STRUCTURE.

(3 IN VE/V TOR llnrneyk UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ROGERS FLANNERY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO FLAN- NERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAYBOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1921.
Application filed September 10, 1919. Serial No. 322,866.
To all to ham it may concern Be it known that I, JoHN Romans FLAN- NERY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in staybolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers, one object of the invention being to provide a staybolt structure in which the bearing member and bolt may be assembled at the shop and said bearing member secured by welding to the outer face of the outer boiler sheet around the bolt opening when the structure is installed in a boiler to connect the outer and inner sheets thereof, and constitute a closure for the bolt opening.
lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view showing an embodiment of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a view showing another embodiment of the invention.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 the inner sheet of a boiler. The outer boiler sheet is provided with a bolt opening 3, the diameter of which is appreciably greater than that of the staybolt 4: which passes through it. The inner boiler sheet may be provided with a threaded opening for the accommodation of the threaded portion 5 of the staybolt.
The head 3 of the staybolt (which may be partly spherical or rounded as in flexible staybolt structures) may be assembled in the shop, in a bearing member 6 and said staybolt may be provided (for testing purposes) with a tell-tale hole 7 which may extend from the inner end of the bolt and terminate at its outer end within the head 3.
The bearing member 6 may consist of a hollow for ing and may be made in either a single piece or a plurality of united forgings, and the contour of the interior of said bearing member is such as to provide a rounded seat 8 for the rounded head of the 'strybolt and a clearance space 9 to provide for longitudinal play of the bolt. The inner wall of the bearing member may be rounded at the inner end of the latter as indicated at 10, and the inner end of said bearing member is so formed as to provide a face 11 whereby the same may be seated against the outer face of the boiler sheet around the opening therein (forming a clo sure for said opening) and the inner curved end portion 10 of said bearing member adjacent to the neck of the bolt may overlie a port-ion of the opening 3 in the boiler sheet. The bearing member may be forged over the head of the bolt at the shop and the inner end of the bolt will be provided with a projecting angular portion 12 which may be grasped with a suitable tool whereby when the devices are being installed) the inner end of the bolt may be screwed through the opening in the inner boiler sheet.
lVhen the staybolt shall have been passed through the inner boiler sheet, with thebearing member seated on the outer boiler sheet, the bearing member will be intimately united to said outer boiler sheet by a weld 13 and the angular projecting end 12 v of the bolt will be removed and the inner end of the bolt will then be upset against the inner face of the inner boiler sheet, as indicated at ll.
It will be observed that the member 6 provides a bearing for the bolt head and also a closure for the opening in the boiler sheet.
The bearing member 6 may be made with a hexagonal or other angularly shaped portion 15 to receive a suitable holding tool, and the inner end of the opening in the bear ing member may be made flaring at 16.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secureby Let ters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening, and a staybolt having a head, of a bearing member for said head located wholly outwardly beyond the outer face of the boiler sheet and securedto the latter, said bearing member permanently inclosing said head.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening, and a staybolt having a head, of a bearand permanently inclosing the head of the nently inclosed in said member, and weld staybolt, uniting said member to the boiler sheet.
3. In a staybolt structure, the combination In testimony whereof, I have signed this with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a specification in the presence of two subscrib- 5 hollow member seatled on the outgr face of ing Witnesses.
the boiler sheet anc coverin sai o enin and having a part overlying a port i on 0? JOHN ROGERS FLANNERY' said opening, said member also having a Witnesses: 7 bearing therein for the rounded head of a JAMES R. HonAN, 10 staybolt, a staybolt having a head perma- EDWIN S. RYoE.
