Description

STAYBOLT TTTTTTTT E.-
lON FILED NOV 25 19 APPL 9. 1,390,9 3, PatentedSept. 20,1921.
UNITED ST TES ETHAN I. DODDS,
PA E OF IC FLAN N ERY .BOLT
' YLSTAYJBVQLT STRUCTURE.
T 0 all whom itanay concern: j
Be it known that I, ETHAN I.' Donns, a citizen of the United States and'a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; and I "do herebydeclare the following to'be' a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to'staybolt structures for boilers and more particularly to a combined bearing and closure structure for affording a mounting for the head of the staybolt and for connecting tl e latter with a boiler sheet, tlie object of the invention being to provide aone piece structure which shall permanently inclose the bolt head so that the parts may be assembled at the shop, and which one-piece structure may be mounted in the boiler sheet in any one of various positions and which may be welded to the boiler sheet.
WVith this and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional view, partlyin elevation, showing one embodiment of the invention, when employed as flush structure. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the mounting projecting outwardly beyond the outer boiler sheet, and Figs. 3 and 4 are views illustrating a modified construction.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 the inner sheet of the boiler. A staybolt 3 is secured within the boiler sheet 2 in any suitable manner and said staybolt is provided at its outer end with a head 4 which is connected with the outer boiler sheet as hereinafter described.
In the embodiment of my invention and its application to the boiler sheet, as shown in Fig. 1, the outer boiler sheet is provided with an opening 5, a portion of the wall of whichis rounded to provide a rounded seat 6 for an outer end portion of a combined bearing and closure member 7, so that the outer end of said member shall be substantially flush with the outer face of the boiler sheet.
The bearing and closure members may be A pncarioaaid November 25, 1919. Serial No. 340,489.
1 l: Specilicationtf Letters Patent. Patented S t 20 1921 elongated and are hollow. tion of the member 7 is enlarged as at 8 and the peripheral portion of this enlarged part 1s rounded as at 9 to have a universally movable or adjustable mounting on the seat 6 in the boiler sheet. The inner end portion of the member 7 is rounded as at 10 so that said member may have a universally movable mounting on a seat 11 formed by a portion of the wall of the opening 12 in theboiler sheet as shown in Fig. 2. The intermediate portion of the member 7 is made with a straight external wall so that said member may be mounted in a similarly shaped opening in the boiler sheet. The inner end portion of the member 7 has a thickened wall 13 whereby a seat 14 for the rounded head 4 of the staybolt is afforded. From this seat the inner wall of the member 7 is made flaring as at 15 to accommodate the swing of the staybolt. The opening or space within the member 7 in which the head of the staybolt is located has such configuration and proportions as to provide a clearance space 16 for the head of the bolt. The enlarged end portion 8 is rounded or beveled as at 17 and this face 17, with a beveled portion 18 of the opening in the boiler sheet forms a groove in which a weld 19 is located, said weld serving to fixedly unite the member 7 to the boiler sheet.
By mounting the member 7 in the boiler sheet so that it may be capable of universal movement (prior to the welding) said member may be so adjusted as to insure proper alinement of the staybolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets. i
The combined bearing member and closure may be constructed from a suitable blank by forging, portions of the blank being slotted as indicated by dotted lines 20 so that portions of said blank may be forced toward each other and caused to inclose the bolt head and the said member 7 and the bolt may be assembled at the shop.
When the member 7 is mounted in the boiler sheet as shown in Fig. 2, so that a large portion shall project beyond the face of the boiler sheet, it will be united to the latter by means of a weld 21 surrounding the straight portion 10 of said member 7.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3 themember 7 is made. with an enlarged outer end portion 22 and a curved portion 23, the former having a rounded peripheral The outer end por- L part 2& mounted on a seat in the boiler sheet. The rounded portion of this member 7* afiords an interior seat 26 for the head of the staybolt and exterior rounded face 27 which may be seated in the boiler sheet in the manner shown in Fig. 4 with the en'- larged portion 22 projecting beyond the outer face of the boiler sheet. The enlarged portion 22 is provided with a beveled edge 28 which, with the beveled portion 29 of the opening in the boiler sheet, .forms a groove in which a weld 30 is located when ,'member.
Having fully described my invention what nently closed and open at the other end, said v member having an enlarged portion at its closed end'provided with a peripheral transversely curved face, whereby said member may have universally movable mounting in a boiler sheet, said member having an exterior portion at its inner end portion rounded lengthwise of said member and having an interior seat for the head of a staybolt, the wall of the opening at the in,- ner end of said member being flaring.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification'in the presence of a subscribing witness.
ETHAN I. DODDS. Witness: p l r VEDWIN S. RICE.
